Myofascial trigger points in intercostal muscles secondary to herpes zoster infection of the intercostal nerve.

Chronic pain in the chest wall is a major complication after herpes zoster infection of intercostal nerves. It is usually difficult to control pain of such origin. Two cases are reported of postherpetic neuralgia after herpes zoster infection involving the intercostal nerves. Both patients had shooting, burning, aching, and localized pain in the muscle supplied by the involved intercostal nerves 1 to 3 months after onset. Compression palpation of a tender spot in one of these muscles induced a referred pain that followed the corresponding interspace, usually in the distal anterior direction. L

Actions of the inspiratory intercostal muscles in flail chest.

We have previously shown in dogs that the ribs in flail chest move paradoxically inward during inspiration but continue to move cranially. We have also shown that flail elicits, probably via an increased activation of the muscle spindles, a threefold to fourfold increase in external intercostal inspiratory EMG activity without inducing any changes in parasternal intercostal activity. Therefore, the present studies were undertaken to test the hypothesis that the persistent cranial motion of the fractured ribs resulted primarily from the action of the external intercostals. A flail was induced i

Development of ribs and intercostal muscles in the chicken embryo.

In the thorax of higher vertebrates, ribs and intercostal muscles play a decisive role in stability and respiratory movements of the body wall. They are derivatives of the somites, the ribs originating in the sclerotome and the intercostal muscles originating in the myotome. During thorax development, ribs and intercostal muscles extend into the lateral plate mesoderm and eventually contact the sternum during ventral closure. Here, we give a detailed description of the morphogenesis of ribs and thoracic muscles in the chicken embryo (Gallus gallus). Using Alcian blue staining as well as Sox9 a

Response of the canine internal intercostal muscles to chest wall vibration.

Although high-frequency mechanical vibration of the rib cage reduces dyspnea, its effects on the respiratory muscles are largely unknown. We have previously shown that in anesthetized dogs, vibrating the rib cage during inspiration elicits a marked increase in the inspiratory electromyographic (EMG) activity recorded from the external intercostal muscles but does not affect tidal volume (VT). In the present studies, we have tested the hypothesis that the maintenance of VT results from the concomitant contraction of the internal interosseous (expiratory) intercostals. When the rib cage was vibr

Response of the canine inspiratory intercostal muscles to chest wall vibration.

High-frequency mechanical vibration of the rib cage reduces dyspnea, but the effect of this procedure on the respiratory muscles is largely unknown. In the present studies, we have initially assessed the electrical and mechanical response to vibration (40 Hz) of the canine parasternal and external intercostal muscles (third interspace) during hyperventilation-induced apnea. When the vibrator was applied to the segment investigated, prominent external intercostal activity was recorded in the seven animals studied, whereas low-amplitude parasternal intercostal activity was recorded in only four

An analysis of action of intercostal muscles in human upper rib cage.

The actions of the intercostal and paraspinal muscles in stabilizing the human upper rib cage have been analyzed using a geometrically realistic mathematical model of the first six ribs, vertebrae, and associated musculature. The model suggests roles of the deep layers of erector spinae in stabilizing the vertebral column so that it can support the loads placed upon it by the ribs under physiological load. If we assume that the tension exerted by an intercostal muscle is proportional to its local thickness, the model predicts that the observed distribution of intercostal thickness is close to

The effect of acute hemiplegia on intercostal muscle activity.

We recorded the EMG of parasternal intercostal muscles in 25 patients with flaccid hemiplegia during quiet spontaneous breathing, voluntary hyperventilation, and CO2-induced hyperventilation. The respiratory drive was abnormal on the hemiplegic side and the function of the intercostal muscles was affected specifically during voluntary hyperventilation.

Oxidative stress in the external intercostal muscles of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: The external intercostal muscles are chronically exposed to increased inspiratory loading and to continuous hypoxia-reoxygenation cycles in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). It was therefore hypothesised that oxidative stress levels would be increased in these muscles, and that treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) would modify the oxidative stress levels and improve muscle dysfunction. METHODS: A case-control study and a case-case study were conducted on the external intercostal muscles of 12 patients with severe OSAS (before and after 6

[Comparison of several rib rings with intercostal muscles for tracheal replacement in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of several types of rib rings with intercostal muscles for the replacement of trachea in thorax. METHODS: The surface layer of the third rib of dogs were ripped off and curved into triangular, quadrilateral and polygonal form. These three types of rib rings with intercostal muscles were used to replace a segment of trachea in thorax. RESULTS: The stability of triangular rib ring was very well, but stricture of ring were often happened because of its smaller internal diameter. These stability of quadrilateral rib ring was the worst. The polygonal rib ring pres

Role of intercostal muscles in the rib cage distortions produced by inspiratory loads.

We studied the patterns of rib cage (RC) deformation in six normal subjects breathing against different resistive and elastic inspiratory loads, and we examined, with concentric needle electrodes, the role played by the inspiratory intercostal muscles in the development of these patterns. Four of the subjects deformed their RC to a more elliptical shape during loaded inspirations; RC anteroposterior diameter became smaller and RC lateral diameter became larger. The RC deformation increased as the load increased, but it appeared to be independent of the nature of the load. Moreover these deform

Motoneurone synchronization for intercostal and abdominal muscles: interneurone influences in two different species.

The contribution of branched-axon monosynaptic inputs in the generation of short-term synchronization of motoneurones remains uncertain. Here, synchronization was measured for intercostal and abdominal motoneurones supplying the lower thorax and upper abdomen, mostly showing expiratory discharges. Synchronization in the anaesthetized cat, where the motoneurones receive a strong direct descending drive, is compared with that in anaesthetized or decerebrate rats, where the direct descending drive is much weaker. In the cat, some examples could be explained by branched-axon monosynaptic inputs, b

Mechanical action of the interosseous intercostal muscles as a function of lung volume.

On the basis of local stimulation of individual muscles, it has been suggested that both the external (EI) and internal interosseous intercostal muscles have an inspiratory action at low lung volumes and an expiratory action at high lung volumes. In this study, we assessed the action of the interosseous intercostal muscles at different lung volumes in 19 anesthetized dogs by synchronously activating the intercostal muscles via ventral root stimulation (VRS). An electrode was positioned on the upper thoracic spinal cord according to previously described techniques. The cervical phrenic rootlets

Activation of the inspiratory intercostal muscles by electrical stimulation of the spinal cord.

Electrical stimulation of the spinal cord was evaluated as a method of activating the inspiratory intercostal muscles. Studies were performed in anesthetized dogs after hyperventilation-induced apnea. A stainless steel electrode, rubberized along its entire length except for 2 to 3 mm at the distal tip, was introduced epidurally onto the dorsal surface of the thoracic spinal cord. Stimulating electrodes were also placed in each hemidiaphragm. Intercostal electromyograms, inspired volume, and thoracoabdominal movements were monitored. The inspiratory capacity was determined in each animal as th

[Mechanism of the functional transformation of paralyzed intercostal muscles in rats with experimental botulism].

The rest membrane potential (RMP) and action potential (AP) of muscle fibers of external and internal intercostal muscles were examined in the local form of botulism. There was a decrease in the RMP and AP magnitudes in both groups of the muscles. This decrease was coupled with a greater proportion of the fibers with a low RMP. The excitability of the muscle fibers varied biphasically; it rose in the early period of paralysis and fell in the later one. The variations found might be accounted for by dystrophy of motoneurons innervating muscles.

[Metabolic activity of the external intercostal muscle of patients with COPD].

INTRODUCTION: The external intercostal muscle is a relevant contributor to ventilatory work in situations of overloading. Like other respiratory muscles, the external intercostal muscle seems to undergo a process of structural remodeling to adapt to a situation of functional disadvantage. However, findings from published studies of morphology have differed to a certain degree. On the one hand, the proportion of fibers involved in anaerobic metabolism increases; on the other hand, the number of capillaries also increases, an occurrence that would facilitate aerobic metabolism. OBJECTIVE: This

[Capillary density and respiratory function in the external intercostal muscle].

UNLABELLED: Changes in lung function have been related to adaptive structural modifications in respiratory muscles. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the capillary density (Dcap) of the external intercostal muscle in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and its possible relation to respiratory function. METHODS: Forty-two individuals (61 +/- 9 years old) underwent conventional lung function testing and evaluation of respiratory muscles (maximum pressures at rest and a tolerance test using Martyn's technique). The sample included 10 subjects with normal lung function and 32 COPD p

Effects of acetylcholine on internal intercostal muscle activity in the rabbit.

In pentobarbitone-anesthetized rabbits, intracarotid injections of acetylcholine (ACh, 3-30 micrograms) during inspiration led to an inhibition of internal intercostal muscle activity (IIMA). After the section of the carotid sinus nerve (CSN), ACh-induced inhibitory responses in IIMA were abolished. In addition, changes of the rabbit carotid chemoreceptor activity were studied by ACh (3-30 micrograms) given into the carotid body region during inspiration. Spontaneous chemoreceptor activity was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by ACh. These results suggest that the inhibitory responses of I

Deep-seated intramuscular lipoma penetrates the intercostal muscle.

Deep-seated intramuscular lipomas are rare, and most exhibit an infiltrating behavior. This study reports serial radiographs of a lipoma in chest wall muscles which penetrated the intercostal muscle for a 6-year period. Although this lipoma did not involve the parietal pleura, it compressed lung. To the authors' knowledge, the present study is the first report to show the growth of a deep-seated chest wall lipoma into the thoracic cavity through serial radiographs. We consider the surgical treatment is needed before deep-seated intramuscular chest wall lipoma compress intrathoracic structures.
