Intermittent fasting and ketone bodies.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a dietary intervention based on time-restricted energy intake. Over the years, IF has been widely investigated as a non-pharmacological approach to increasing life expectancy and promoting brain health. The underlying mechanisms by which IF promotes its beneficial effects are attributed to hormesis, an evolutionary adaptive strategy that regulates cellular responses to stress. These effects include elevated levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), enhanced neurogenesis and autophagy, increased synaptic plasticity, and improved cognitive functions such as

Intermittent Fasting and Metabolic Health.

Given the ongoing strain that the obesity epidemic has placed on public health outcomes, new and effective approaches to weight control are needed. One approach to improving weight and metabolic outcomes is intermittent fasting, which consists of multiple different timing schedules for temporary food avoidance, including alternate-day fasting, other similar full-day fasting patterns, and time-restricted feeding (where the day's food is consumed over a 6-h period, allowing for 18 h of fasting). These feeding schedules have favorable metabolic effects by intermittently inducing the metabolism of

Intermittent fasting increases plasma arachidonic acid.

OBJECTIVE: Intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as a dietary intervention with potential effects on metabolic health and inflammatory processes. However, clinical evidence for its benefits remains inconsistent, despite numerous biochemical indications. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), as precursors of bioactive lipid mediators, may represent a potential mechanism through which dietary interventions such as IF exert anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects. Therefore, we investigated changes in blood fatty acid (FA) composition and associated metabolic endpoints during IF. METHODS: Thirty-

Intermittent fasting in health and disease.

CONTEXT: Intermittent fasting, a new-age dietary concept derived from an age-old tradition, involves repetitive cycles of fasting/calorie restriction and eating. OBJECTIVE: We aim to take a deep dive into the biological responses to intermittent fasting, delineate the disease-modifying and cognitive effects of intermittent fasting, and also shed light on the possible side effects. METHODS: Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies were reviewed, followed by an in-depth analysis, and compilation of their implications in health and disease. RESULTS: Intermittent fasting improves the body's stress

Impact of intermittent fasting on micronutrient intake.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review aims to evaluate the current evidence on how intermittent fasting regimens - including alternate-day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted eating (TRE) - affect micronutrient intake in adults. RECENT FINDINGS: Several randomized controlled trials have reported reductions in the intake of key micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin C, and various B vitamins during ADF and TRE. These deficiencies are largely driven by lower total energy intake and reduced consumption of nutrient-dense foods on fasting days. While some studies fo

Impact of intermittent fasting on glucose homeostasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article provides an overview of the most recent human trials that have examined the impact of intermittent fasting on glucose homeostasis. RECENT FINDINGS: Our literature search retrieved one human trial of alternate day fasting, and three trials of Ramadan fasting published in the past 12 months. Current evidence suggests that 8 weeks of alternate day fasting that produces mild weight loss (4% from baseline) has no effect on glucose homeostasis. As for Ramadan fasting, decreases in fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance have been noted after 4 weeks in healt

Systemic and transcriptional response to intermittent fasting and fasting-mimicking diet in mice.

BACKGROUND: Dietary restriction (DR) has multiple beneficial effects on health and longevity and can also improve the efficacy of certain therapies. Diets used to instigate DR are diverse and the corresponding response is not uniformly measured. We compared the systemic and liver-specific transcriptional response to intermittent fasting (IF) and commercially available fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) after short- and long-term use in C57BL/6 J mice. RESULTS: We show that neither DR regimen causes observable adverse effects in mice. The weight loss was limited to 20% and was quickly compensated du

A Narrative Review of Intermittent Fasting With Exercise.

Intermittent fasting is a dietary pattern that encompasses the 5:2 diet, alternate-day fasting, and time-restricted eating. All 3 involve alternating periods of fasting and ad libitum eating. Like other dietary strategies, intermittent fasting typically induces loss of both fat mass and lean mass. Exercise may thus be a useful adjuvant to promote lean mass retention while adding cardiometabolic, cognitive, mental, and emotional health improvements. In this narrative review, we summarize current evidence regarding the combination of intermittent fasting and exercise and its influence on body we

Intermittent fasting-the future treatment in NASH patients?

NASH is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease with the potential of evolving towards end-stage liver disease and HCC, even in the absence of cirrhosis. Apart from becoming an increasingly prevalent indication for liver transplantation in cirrhotic and HCC patients, its burden on the healthcare system is also exerted by the increased number of noncirrhotic NASH patients. Intermittent fasting has recently gained more interest in the scientific community as a possible treatment approach for different components of metabolic syndrome. Basic science and clinical studies have shown that

Unexpected worsening of doxorubicin cardiotoxicity upon intermittent fasting.

Recently in Cell Metabolism, Ozcan et al. used preclinical and clinical data to suggest that alternate-day fasting may exacerbate the cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin through the TFEB/GDF15 pathway, leading to myocardial atrophy and impaired cardiac function. The link between caloric intake, chemotherapy-induced cachexia, and cardiotoxicity warrants more clinical attention.

Influence of intermittent fasting on autophagy in the liver.

Studies have found that intermittent fasting (IF) can prevent diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and neuropathy, while in humans it has helped to alleviate metabolic syndrome, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and many other disorders. IF involves a series of coordinated metabolic and hormonal changes to maintain the organism's metabolic balance and cellular homeostasis. More importantly, IF can activate hepatic autophagy, which is important for maintaining cellular homeostasis and energy balance, quality control, cell and tissue remodeling, and defense against extracellular dam

Intermittent fasting in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has inspired researchers to investigate therapies and tools supporting the treatment of this disease. One such tool is intermittent fasting (IF). Given the nature and mechanism of action of IF, it would be logical for it to have a beneficial effect on T2DM patients. This study analyzes the role of IF in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, used alongside standard recommendations, based on the current literature available to the authors. The authors discuss the benefits of IF in T2DM treatment, such as improved glycaemic control, improve

Intermittent Fasting-A Healthy Dietary Pattern for Diabetic Nephropathy.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN), a metabolic disease, is characterized by severe systemic metabolic disorders. A unique dietary pattern, such as intermittent fasting (IF) has shown promising protective effects on various metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular and nervous system diseases. However, its role in regulating kidney disease, especially in DN, is still being investigated. Here, we summarize the current research progress, highlighting the relationship between IF and the risk factors for the progression of DN, and discuss the potential mechanisms by which IF improves renal in

Brain-Gut-Microbiome Interactions and Intermittent Fasting in Obesity.

The obesity epidemic and its metabolic consequences are a major public health problem both in the USA and globally. While the underlying causes are multifactorial, dysregulations within the brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) system play a central role. Normal eating behavior is coordinated by the tightly regulated balance between intestinal, extraintestinal and central homeostatic and hedonic mechanisms, resulting in stable body weight. The ubiquitous availability and marketing of inexpensive, highly palatable and calorie-dense food has played a crucial role in shifting this balance towards hedonic ea

Intermittent fasting attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced neuroinflammation and memory impairment.

BACKGROUND: Systemic bacterial infections often result in enduring cognitive impairment and are a risk factor for dementia. There are currently no effective treatments for infection-induced cognitive impairment. Previous studies have shown that intermittent fasting (IF) can increase the resistance of neurons to injury and disease by stimulating adaptive cellular stress responses. However, the impact of IF on the cognitive sequelae of systemic and brain inflammation is unknown. METHODS: Rats on IF for 30 days received 1 mg/kg of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or saline intravenously. Half of the rat

Interpreting intermittent fasting physiology in the context of behaviour.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a popular diet strategy involving extended periods of fasting or marked energy restriction, interrupted by periods of unrestricted intake. Several protocols exist under the IF umbrella, differing in timing, duration, and whether they require complete fasting or permit limited energy intake during restriction periods. These factors affect physiological and behavioural responses to IF. This review considers evidence that common IF approaches produce distinct physiological effects, and how different temporal structures alter behaviours affecting energy balance. The cl
