Attitudes of psychiatric residents toward the necessity of internship.

The authors note that the elimination of the internship requirement for board certification has engendered much discussion and has called attention to the need for further study of training in psychiatry. To help clarify the issue, they investigated demographic and career choice factors, individual internship decisions, and perceptions and feelings about these decisions in 57 psychiatric residents. The results indicate that the career plans of students have a strong influence on their training choices--those who are oriented toward inpatient psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine view the inter

Otolaryngology Curriculum During Residency Preparation Course Improves Preparedness for Internship.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Residency preparation courses (RPCs) have become a widely adopted practice to ease the transition of medical students into residency, but these courses often lack training in skills expected of subspecialty interns. To fill this gap, a simulation-based curriculum in otolaryngology (ORL) was implemented at the University of Michigan Medical School. The curriculum aimed to improve confidence and perceived ability to perform common ORL skills for graduating students prior to internship. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Six basic simulations (tracheostomy, fle

[Assessment of lumbar puncture skills in students, interns and residents attending hospital internship].

Although lumbar puncture is recognized as a great contributor to the diagnosis of some neurological diseases, the modalities of learning this procedure are still poorly defined in training programs for students attending their hospital internships. Apprehension related to the lack of experience and the fear of failure accelerates the abandonment of the practice. This study aims to assess lumbar puncture skills in the students at the Faculty of Medicine in Nouakchott as well as their subjective experience of this procedure. We conducted a survey of TCEM and DCEM 4 interns, residents and student

Field notes from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control 2019 pilot internship program for resident doctors.

The 10-week internship for the pilot cohort of resident doctors from various teaching hospitals in Nigeria was a very rewarding experience. The internship was a beautiful immersion into field epidemiology, rumor surveillance, risk communication, digital tools for surveillance, developing strategic documents, line lists interpretation, weekly presentations and outbreak response coordination alongside working briefly as an incident manager for the Yellow Fever technical working group. Some of the learning points included: meeting coordination, contributions to ongoing research, review of trainin

Making the most of the surgical internship: Optimizing preliminary year for future vascular and interventional radiologists.

The surgical internship represents a unique opportunity over that of transitional years or internal medicine preliminary years because it allows trainees to develop procedural confidence, clinical judgment, and patient-care habits that directly translate to vascular and interventional radiology (VIR) practice. Although the internship year is often viewed as a prerequisite before radiology residency, available evidence suggests that surgical preliminary training may offer advantages in procedural exposure and perceived preparedness for trainees pursuing VIR. As VIR continues to evolve into a cl

Effects of Sleep, Physical Activity, and Shift Work on Daily Mood: a Prospective Mobile Monitoring Study of Medical Interns.

BACKGROUND: Although short sleep, shift work, and physical inactivity are endemic to residency, a lack of objective, real-time information has limited our understanding of how these problems impact physician mental health. OBJECTIVE: To understand how the residency experience affects sleep, physical activity, and mood, and to understand the directional relationships among these variables. DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal study. SUBJECTS: Thirty-three first-year residents (interns) provided data from 2 months pre-internship through the first 6 months of internship. MAIN MEASURES: Objectiv

Neurology training in italy: a perceived proficiency-based survey on Italian residency programmes and compliance with European training standards.

BACKGROUND: Since 2005, the European Training Requirements in Neurology (ETRN) have defined the clinical, practical, and research competencies expected in European neurology residency programmes. However, significant variability in training quality persists among Italian programmes. This survey, conducted by the Italian Section of Young Neurologists, aimed to assess how closely Italian neurology residency programmes with ETRN standards and to evaluate residents' and early-career neurologists' self-reported perceived knowledge, practical skills, and access to specialized training. METHODS: An

Comparative values of medical school assessments in the prediction of internship performance.

BACKGROUND: Multiple undergraduate achievements have been used for graduate admission consideration. Their relative values in the prediction of residency performance are not clear. This study compared the contributions of major undergraduate assessments to the prediction of internship performance. METHODS: Internship performance ratings of the graduates of a medical school were collected from 2012 to 2015. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the predictive values of undergraduate measures assessing basic and clinical sciences knowledge and clinical performances, aft

Insomnia symptoms and short sleep predict anxiety and worry in response to stress exposure: a prospective cohort study of medical interns.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: While anxiety rates are alarmingly high in short sleeping insomniacs, the relationship between insomnia and anxiety symptoms has not been extensively studied, especially in comparison to the relationship between insomnia and depressive symptoms. Using residency training as a naturalistic stress exposure, we prospectively assessed the role of sleep disturbance and duration on anxiety-risk in response to stress. METHODS: Web-based survey data from 1336 first-year training physicians (interns) prior to and then quarterly across medical internship. Using mixed effects modeling,

Differences in Residency Advising and Mentorship for Osteopathic and Allopathic Emergency Medicine Applicants.

BACKGROUND: There has been a notable increase in osteopathic (DO) medical students applying to emergency medicine (EM) residency programs following the integration of the graduate medical education (GME) accreditation system. Despite this growth, DO students face significant challenges, including limited access to home EM residency programs and specialty-specific advising compared to their allopathic (MD) counterparts. Previous research indicates substantial dissatisfaction among DO students regarding the availability and quality of EM residency advising. Consequently, there is a critical need
