A relational approach to improving interprofessional teamwork in post-partum haemorrhage (PPH).

BACKGROUND: Post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) is an obstetric emergency that requires effective teamwork under complex conditions. We explored healthcare team performance for women who suffered a PPH, focusing on relationships and culture as critical influences on teamwork behaviours and outcomes. METHODS: In collaboration with clinical teams, we implemented structural, process and relational interventions to improve teamwork in PPH cases. We were guided by the conceptual framework of Relational Coordination and used a mixed methods approach to data collection and analysis. We employed translatio

Pandemic-Related Disruptions in Nursing Education: Zooming Out for an Innovative Interprofessional Simulation.

When the COVID-19 global pandemic began, many higher education systems had to restructure their educational delivery system and transition to online learning. This posed a challenge for students in health professions education programs as it impacted their ability to participate in hands-on learning regarding patient care. As a result, the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing developed and implemented simulation-based learning experiences to allow graduate-level social worker, counselor, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner students the opportunity to learn as an interdiscip

Fifty years of SSRI-related oral side effects: A call for interprofessional collaboration.

The oral side effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) include xerostomia, gingival bleeding, burning mouth syndrome, bruxism, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), impacting the quality of life (QoL). These stomatognathic diseases are often overlooked in clinical practice. This comment advocates interprofessional relations among physicians, pharmacists and dentists to improve the recognition, prevention and management of SSRI-related oral side effects.

Interprofessional care improves health-related well-being and reduces medical costs for chronic pain patients.

This study evaluated whether patients with somatic symptom disorder, expressing chronic pain that could not be attributed to a medical condition, would benefit from an 8-week inpatient residence at a psychiatric ward. In the 1-year follow-up after termination the authors examined the extent to which the integrated treatment decreased patient costs. A total of 106 patients participated in the follow-up and reported a significant improvement in their general health (Cohen's d = 1.5-2.21), a decrease in impairment due to pain (d = 2.24), and a decrease in symptom severity (d = 1.29). They took fe

Enhancing tuberculosis patient safety: The impact of interprofessional collaboration based telecare on drug-related problems in a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Complex and long-term TB treatment increases the risk of drug-related problems (DRPs). Optimal TB treatment requires a multidisciplinary team, but most hospitals do not see this condition. This study aimed to analyze the impact of telecare-based IPC practices on reducing the incidence of DPRs in patients with TB. METHODS: A Randomized Control Trial was conducted in a single-masked group with a study population of 300. Randomization was performed using a computer-generated sequence with 1:1 allocation ratio. Blinding was maintained by ensuring that the intervention and control trea

Health-related quality of life of people with multimorbidity at a community-based, interprofessional student-assisted clinic: Implications for assessment and intervention.

Objective This study examined the relationship between the number of comorbidities and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and between select physical conditions and HRQoL. Differences in HRQoL in comparison to a normative sample were also examined. Method A cross-sectional study among people with multimorbidity ( n = 401) attending a community-based, interdisciplinary health clinic was conducted. HRQoL was measured using the eight dimensions of the SF-36. Multiple linear regression and t-tests were used to analyse the data. Results A downward trend in HRQoL continued from 2 to 14 concurren

Interprofessional Management of Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (Dunbar Syndrome) Related to Lumbar Lordosis and Hip Dysplasia: A Patient's Perspective.

UNLABELLED: We present a 53-year-old female patient with median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), also known as Dunbar syndrome or celiac artery compression syndrome, related to lumbar lordosis and hip dysplasia. She utilized interprofessional management strategies, which were beneficial in reducing lumbar lordosis and MALS-related symptoms. This finding is important because there are no other reports in the literature describing interprofessional strategies to manage symptoms for patients who are waiting for surgery or are not candidates for surgery. LEARNING POINTS: Excessive lumbar lordosi

Relational coordination and psychological safety among interprofessional healthcare team members on an acute inpatient stroke unit: a cross-sectional study.

Interprofessional teamwork is essential for delivering safe, high-quality stroke care, yet effective coordination across professions remains challenging. As part of a quality improvement project, we conducted a cross-sectional study to assess baseline interprofessional teamwork on an acute inpatient stroke unit, focusing on relational coordination (RC) and psychological safety. An electronic survey was completed by 53 healthcare team members (n = 137), including attending-physicians (senior physicians), trainee-physicians (fellows and residents), nurses, and other allied health professionals.

Beyond surviving: The mental and physical impairment of health-related quality of life after polytrauma emphasizes the need for interprofessional long-term aftercare.

BACKGROUND: Major trauma, particularly from road traffic accidents, is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in young adults worldwide. Advances in trauma center management, especially in Germany, have substantially improved survival rates to approximately 90%, which can be considered excellent. They often experience a reduced health-related quality of life (HrQoL) due to persistent physical, emotional, and mental challenges, underscoring the need for comprehensive long-term aftercare. This study focuses on the traumatic aftermath two years after polytrauma beyond the individual pa
