BACKGROUND: Primary ocular lymphoma is a distinct subtype of intraocular lymphoma. Its clinical presentation can mimic benign conditions. Diagnosis is often based on obtaining an intraocular biopsy. Optimal management is not yet realized. METHODS: This report combines the experience of the author with a review of the current literature pertaining to intraocular lymphoma. RESULTS: Primary ocular lymphoma, a subtype of primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, has a variable clinical course and frequently mimics benign inflammatory disease. Even when suspected, diagnosis can be elusive. Che

Intraocular lymphoma (IOL) is a rare lymphocytic malignancy which contains two main distinct forms. Primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) is mainly a sub-type of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Alternatively, IOL can originate from outside the central nervous system (CNS) by metastasizing to the eye. These tumors are known as secondary intraocular lymphoma (SIOL). The IOL can arise in the retina, uvea, vitreous, Bruch's membrane and optic nerve. There are predominantly of B-cell origin; however there are also rare T-cell variants. Diagnosis remains challenging for ophthalmologis

The paper in devoted to a rare condition difficult to diagnose, intraocular lymphoma. Five patients with a disease history of 2 to 6 years were examined. The authors describe clinical features of the condition and histologic and electron microscopic findings. The clinical pattern of malignant intraocular lymphoma in polymorphous, therefore virtually every case with a sluggish uveitis or posterior scleritis resistant to common therapy has to be verified. A hematologist should take part in examination of such patients. Since the involvement is local, as our findings evidence, a course of polyche

A thirty-year-old patient irradiated five years previously on account of a cerebral tumour was admitted for pars plana vitrectomy with the diagnosis of bilateral chronic uveitis and secondary glaucoma. The intraocular inflammation was characterized by corneal precipitates, pseudohypopyon, circulating large cell conglomerates in the anterior chamber and a dense whitish infiltration of the vitreous cavity. Because an intraocular malignant lymphoma was suspected, repeatedly a diagnostic pars plana vitrectomy was performed on the right eye and once on the left eye and bilateral actinotherapy was a

Intraocular lymphoma (IOL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that primarily presents in two distinct types. The first type, known as primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL), is mainly recognized as a subtype of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Recent classifications have emphasized the primary ocular sites affected, with vitreoretinal lymphoma emerging as the most common variant linked to PCNSL. Despite its rarity, the incidence of PIOL is rising among both immunocompromised and immunocompetent populations. Most cases of PIOL are identified as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, al

The purpose of this review is to describe the clinical features, pathology and molecular biology of intraocular lymphomas, which represent a heterogenous group of malignant neoplasms; to propose an anatomical classification of these tumours according to whether they occur in the retina or uvea; and to overview laboratory investigations and highlight factors required for successful biopsy. Recent findings show that retinal lymphomas are high-grade (i.e. aggressive), B-cell malignancies and are associated with a poor prognosis, with most patients dying of central nervous system disease. The authors presented two personal cases of ocular involvement by non hodgkin's malignant lymphomas. The first one concerned a 55 year-old man; initial symptoms were oedematous optic neuropathy associated to vitritis, uveitis and chorio-retinal infiltrates. The ocular symptoms did not respond to cortico-steroid therapy and lymphoma was diagnosed eight months later by histologic examination of a cerebral tumor discovered by C.T. scan. Systemic examination was normal. In spite of a cerebral radiotherapy associated to chemotherapy, uveitis and vitritis occurred in the other eye and vitreous biops

BACKGROUND: The classification of intraocular lymphomas is based on their anatomical location. They are divided into uveal lymphomas with involvement of the choroid, ciliary body or iris and vitreoretinal lymphomas with isolated or combined involvement of the vitreous body and/or retina. Over the last decades it has become increasingly possible to work out the clinical and pathobiological features of the various subtypes, thereby reducing the diagnostic hurdles and creating improved treatment options.
OBJECTIVE: A summary of the various types of intraocular lymphoma in terms of clinical featu

Intraocular lymphomas are among the rare malignancies that present with a wide variety of clinical manifestations. Differential diagnosis can be very troublesome due to its mimicking nature, insidious disease onset, and partial treatment response to steroids. The most important step in diagnosis is a high index of suspicion. Signs of the disease are now easier to detect using multimodal imaging techniques. In this case series, we reviewed the clinical characteristics of two women aged 70 and 71 years and a 72-year-old man with intraocular lymphoma and described their multimodal imaging finding

PURPOSE: Primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) is a subtype of central nervous system lymphoma. Although this lymphoma is rare, its incidence has tripled in the past 15 years. Currently, the only available model is a murine metastatic malignant lymphoma that occurs after intraperitoneal inoculation of Rev-2-T-6 lymphoma cells into newborn syngeneic mice. The current study was conducted to develop a new experimental model for PIOL.
METHODS: Rev-2-T-6 cells (0.5 x 10(5) or 1.0 x 10(5)) were inoculated into the vitreous of adult BALB/c mice. Mice were monitored clinically every other day and under

We present a case of a patient with bilateral posterior uveitis HLA-A29 positive, masquerading intraocular lymphoma. A 43 year-old woman presented with bilateral vitritis and chorioretinal lesions compatible with "birdshot lesions". The patient was initially diagnosed with birdshot retinochoroidopathy and later on, during follow up, the occurrence of neurologic involvement and the lack of response to systemic immunosuppression led us to re-evaluate the diagnosis. A definite diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma with central nervous system involvement was made. This case is presented to highlight t

PURPOSE: To describe diverse and atypical presentations of the most common masquerader in neoplastic masquerade syndromes.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional case series. The authors identified three patients who presented with atypical and diagnostically challenging masquerading manifestations. These patients were eventually found to have primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL). Their case histories, presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests, and treatments are described.
RESULTS: Patient 1 masqueraded as viral retinitis and branch retinal vein occlusion but was resistant to 5 weeks of

Intraocular lymphoma (IOL) is an extremely rare tumor. We carried out a retrospective cytopathological study with vitreous and intraocular perfusion fluid obtained on conducting a pars plana vitrectomy in 18 cases of IOL. In the 18 cases, nine were patients of Kansai Medical University Takii Hospital from 1991 to 2007, and the other nine had already been reported by other hospitals. Most patients were male, and the average age at onset was 60.4-year-old. The main symptoms were vitreous opacity, amblyopia, and blurred vision. Cases of primary intraocular lymphoma numbered 8/15 (53%), while case

Vitreoretinal lymphomas are rare ocular cancers, and the subset of primary central nervous system lymphomas that are based in the posterior eye. These tumours are challenging to treat, and today management generally involves a multispecialty team coordinating a treatment protocol that may include intraocular chemotherapy, ocular irradiation, systemic chemotherapy and/or autologous stem cell transplantation. The ophthalmologist has specific responsibility for the intraocular chemotherapy, which is delivered to the eye by intravitreal injection. The most commonly injected drugs are methotrexate-

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare B-cell lymphoma occurring mainly in HIV patients. The tumor frequently involves extranodal sites such as the oral cavity, nasal cavity, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and lungs. The neoplastic cells are characterized by a plasmablastic appearance and typical immunophenotype that indicates plasma cell differentiation. Herein, we report a case of intraocular involvement by plasmablastic lymphoma in a HIV patient with a long history of cytomegalovirus retinitis and loss of vision. After an evisceration performed to control the blind, painful eye a diagnosis o

Intraocular lymphomas, including vitreoretinal and choroidal lymphoma, can simulate the clinical presentation of other benign and malignant ocular diseases resulting in diagnostic delays. Multimodal imaging features can raise early clinical suspicion to support appropriate subspecialty referrals and treatment for patients affected by these conditions. This review synthesises current evidence on the diagnostic and prognostic value of characteristic imaging features of these rare malignancies. Findings are reviewed based on imaging modality, including fundus photography, optical coherence tomogr

PURPOSE: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a neoplastic process of the lymphatic system in which tumors develop from lymphocytes. The absence of Reed-Sternberg cells differentiates NHL from Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Mantle cell lymphoma is a mature B-cell NHL, typically with an aggressive course. Manifestations of intraocular mantle cell lymphoma include anterior uveitis, morphologic changes to the uvea, vitritis, intraocular masses, as well as subretinal or choroidal infiltrates.
CASE REPORT: A 71-year-old white man with known mantle cell lymphoma presents with recent-onset blurred vision in the le

PURPOSE: To follow the changes in the electroretinograms (ERGs) in a patient with primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) who had a complete remission after chemotherapy.
METHODS: ERGs were recorded in a 41-year-old woman with PIOL during and after complete remission with chemotherapy. The patient was diagnosed with PIOL from both the ocular signs and the medical history of cranial lymphoma.
RESULTS: The ERGs were depressed in the subject. The amplitudes of the bright white flash b-waves were smaller than the a-waves, resulting in a "negative type" ERG. Six weeks after the beginning of chemother
