Intraoperative anesthetic complications can be prevented or minimized if the anesthetist is able to anticipate such problems in the preanesthetic period. Therefore, an adequate preanesthetic medical history that includes previous anesthetic experiences and past and current drug therapy is extremely important. Furthermore, the anesthetist must be properly trained to anticipate undesirable reactions to anesthetic agents. The signs of an impending disaster are subtle and nonspecific in the anesthetized patient. Therefore, continuous vigilance of the patient's physiologic status coupled with a hig

An esophagectomy is a high-risk procedure with considerable potential peri-operative morbidity and mortality. The procedure, regardless of approach, demands high-technical precision and careful, coordinated management among a multidisciplinary team throughout the peri-operative course. While rare, intra-operative complications and catastrophes, such as major bleeding or airway injuries, may occur. The ability to readily recognize and intervene is critical to a successful outcome.

Dental implant placement is a controlled, programmed surgical procedure, not without its complications. The aim of the present paper is to study the intraoperative complications in implant surgery, carrying out a review of articles appearing in Medline over the last 10 years. Among the intra operative complications related with surgery, hemorrhagic accidents occur most frequently in the interforaminal region, since the majority of the vascular branches enter the mandibular bone in this region. Nerve damage can arise as a consequence of inferior alveolar nerve transposition or lateralization; o

Cataract surgery is frequently and successfully performed in the developed world. The indications for the operation have shifted on one hand towards healthier patients seeking freedom from glasses and on the other hand towards more complex cases. How should the patient be informed? What complications can occur intraoperatively, and what treatment options are available for these complications? This article offers a focus on conditions such as zonulopathy and pseudoexfoliation that can pose challenges to cataract surgery. It discusses the use of specialized tools such as capsular tension rings an

Intraoperative complications of neck surgery are uncommon and rarely life-threatening and exact anatomical knowledge and precise dissection are most important for prevention. Anatomical variants (e.g. non-recurrent nerve, extralaryngeal branching) predispose to damage of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) can prevent bilateral nerve damage but in cases of accidental nerve damage primary reconstruction can improve vocal cord function. Autotransplantation of parathyroid tissue can reduce the rate of hypoparathyroidism but cannot be postulated as a rou

Benign esophageal disease encompasses structural, motility, and inflammatory disorders and is often managed with medical therapy unless complicated or refractory disease necessitates surgical intervention. This article outlines intraoperative complications in benign esophageal surgery and interventions, with a focus on bleeding and perforation management. Techniques for addressing procedure-specific challenges, including hiatal hernia repair and fundoplication, Heller myotomy, and endoscopic dilation, and peroral endoscopic myotomy are highlighted. Preoperative preparation and risk mitigation

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article surveys the literature from 2002 and 2003 and addresses a variety of complications that may arise during cataract surgery. Modern surgical techniques and technology contribute to the decreased incidence of complications. Surgeon experience, early recognition of potential complications, and optimal handling of events lead to better outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recognizing eyes preoperatively that are particularly at risk for having dysgenesis of the capsular bag, cortical-capsular adhesions, low endothelial cell reserve, dropped nucleus, and bag-lens dislocation w

BACKGROUND: The harmonic scalpel is an ultrasonically activated surgical instrument for tissue dissection. Despite its expanding surgical applications, there are no reports about associated complications.
CASE: A 35-year-old woman sustained injury to the sigmoid colon from the use of the harmonic scalpel during laparoscopic lysis of pelvic adhesions. The injury was identified and repaired laparoscopically in a primary fashion with no subsequent sequelae.
CONCLUSION: Acoustic energy coupling and overheating of the laparosonic blade extender sheath occur with bending of the instrument. This ca

We aimed to identify presurgical and surgical risk factors for intraoperative complications in patients with pheochromocytomas. A retrospective study of patients with pheochromocytomas who underwent surgery in ten Spanish hospitals between 2011 and 2021 was performed. One hundred and sixty-two surgeries performed in 159 patients were included. The mean age was 51.6 ± 16.4 years old and 52.8% were women. Median tumour size was 40 mm (range 10-110). Laparoscopic adrenalectomy was performed in 148 patients and open adrenalectomy in 14 patients. Presurgical alpha- and beta-blockade was performed i

BACKGROUND: Complications due to hysteroscopy are relatively rare events. They occur more frequently with operative hysteroscopy than with diagnostic hysteroscopy. Exact complications rates are difficult to determine owing to the natural tendency to report successes but not complications. Recognition of these situations will lead to prevention; in fact, all the most serious complications of operative hysteroscopy can be avoided when proper precautions are taken and close communication is maintained among gynecologic surgeon, the anesthesiologist and nursing staff. The more clinically significa

Intraoperative radiotherapy with variable energy electrons has been used as a supplemental boost to treat 6 children with locally advanced retroperitoneal malignancies. Of the patients 4 had treatment-related injuries to portions of the urinary tract within the intraoperative and external radiation fields. Three patients had significant renal impairment requiring surgical correction. The pathogenesis and management of treatment-induced injury to the urinary tract are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral body stenting systems (VBSs) are superior to balloon kyphoplasty for performing vertebral augmentation and height restoration. However, VBS may likely result in more material-related complications that have been under-reported. Here, an 84-year-old female's vertebral stents "toppled over" before the filling cement was fully applied, thus necessitating an additional posterior fusion.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 84-year-old female presented with low back pain after a fall. Dynamic standing and decubitus X-rays revealed a vertebral compression fracture at T12 resulting in an intra

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) to be a feasible surgical technique in treating esophageal carcinoma. Postoperative complications have been extensively reviewed, but literature focusing on intraoperative complications is limited. The main objective of this study was to report major intraoperative complications and 90-day mortality during MIE for cancer.
METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from 10 European esophageal surgery centers. All intention-to-treat, minimally invasive laparoscopic/thoracoscopic esophagectomies with gastric conduit reconstr

Intraoperative complication during laparoscopic mesorectal excision for rectal cancer is a common complication occurring in 11% to 15% of the cases. They are probably underestimated because not systematically reported. The most frequent intraoperative complications are hemorrhage (3-7%), tumor perforation (1-4%), bowel injury (1-3%), ureter injury (1%), urogenital injury (2%), other organ injury (<1%), and anastomotic complications (1%). The mechanisms, management and prevention of vascular port injury, inferior mesenteric artery bleeding, small bowel and colon perforation, ureteral and urethr

During 10-year period (2001-2010) in the clinic there were operated on 3648 patients, suffering cholelithic disease. Most frequent intraoperative complications, especially in an acute calculous cholecystitis, were: hemorrhage from the bed of gallbladder and its artery, bile leakage, common biliary duct and internal organs damage. A casuistic case was depicted--the rubber tube migration from the wound into the intestinal lumen and its exile per vias naturalis. The authors consider, that aiming to warn the operative complications during performance of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the operation

Intraoperative complications occurred in 28 (2.8%) and early postoperative complications in 157 (15.7%) out of 1,000 operations for vagotomy in duodenal ulcer (109 truncal, 64 selective, 445 isolated SPV, and 372 SPV combined with draining operations). Postoperative lethality was 1.3%. Controllable types of complications were encountered in 2.6%, prognostic in 9.6%, and non-prognostic in 5.7% of cases. The first two groups of complications accounted for two thirds of the total number and determined the lethal outcome in 0.7% of the fatal cases. Thus, mastering of the operative techniques and r
