[Effectiveness research of medicated γ intrauterine device and medicated genefix intrauterine device inserted immediately after abortion].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of medicated γ intrauterine device (IUD) and medicated genefix IUD inserted immediately after abortion. METHODS: A multicenter clinical trail was performed for the study from Mar. 2012 to Jan. 2013. Totally 840 women who volunteered to participate were randomly allocated to γ-group (medicated γ IUD) or genefix-group (medicated genefix IUD) immediately after abortion. While 464 abortion women who had not used IUD or steroids contraceptive methods were chosen as control group. The effectiveness of the IUD were followed up for 1 year. All women were requir

Menstrual bleeding pattern and iron status in women fitted with copper and non-medicated intrauterine contraceptive devices.

A prospective study of the menstrual bleeding pattern and iron status was conducted in 42 healthy Nigerian women volunteers before and after being fitted with either a medicated, copper T (TCu.200B) (n = 20) or a non-medicated, Lippes loop (n = 22) intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). After about six months of use, the mean fasting serum iron and packed cell volume (PCV) were significantly higher (+32% and +6% respectively), mean serum ferritin was significantly decreased (-14%) compared to the pre-insertion levels in the copper T IUD users. In the Lippes loop IUD users, mean fasting serum

Intrauterine device insertion after medical abortion.

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing immediate intrauterine device (IUD) insertion after first-trimester surgical abortion with interval insertion show similar efficacy and expulsion rates. However, women randomized to interval insertion of an IUD are less likely to return for device placement. An ideal time to insert intrauterine contraception may be the day a woman presents for verification of a completed medical abortion. We examined immediate insertion of IUDs after completed first-trimester medical abortion. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective, observational clinical study to determine expulsio

Medications to ease intrauterine device insertion: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Potential barriers to intrauterine device (IUD) use include provider concern about difficult insertion, particularly for nulliparous women. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the evidence on the effectiveness of medications to ease IUD insertion on provider outcomes (i.e., ease of insertion, need for adjunctive insertion measures, insertion success). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the PubMed database for peer-reviewed articles published in any language from database inception through February 2016. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examin

Intrauterine Device Training Workshop for Preclinical Medical Students.

INTRODUCTION: Medical school reproductive health curricula often lack adequate education regarding intrauterine devices (IUDs). When placed in clinical scenarios, students may have insufficient knowledge and training to counsel patients about IUDs. METHODS: We developed a workshop for preclinical medical students and assessed whether it improved knowledge of and comfort with counseling patients on IUDs. The workshop consisted of a 45-minute lecture and a 45-minute IUD simulation training. Each session was taught to groups of 40 to 50 students. The workshop was evaluated between January 2016 a

Outcomes of medical abortion with an intrauterine device in situ: a retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of evidence on the outcomes of medical abortion with an intrauterine device (IUD) in situ. Guidelines recommend IUD removal prior to medical abortion, but retrieval is not always possible. This study examines the outcomes of medical abortion (< 12 weeks) in women where the IUD was removed prior to abortion and those where it remained in situ. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical abortion outcomes < 12 weeks (complete abortion, incomplete abortion and ongoing pregnancy) at a single abortion service in Scotland over five years (2020-2024). Outcomes were compare

The Impact of a Simulated Intrauterine Device Insertion Clinic on Osteopathic Medical Students' Knowledge, Attitude, and Self-Efficacy Regarding Intrauterine Devices.

Background Despite high rates of unintended pregnancy in the United States, there is a lack of comprehensive, high-quality education about intrauterine devices (IUDs) within U.S. medical school curricula. This study evaluated the impact of a simulated IUD insertion clinic on knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and comfort regarding IUDs among preclinical osteopathic medical students in the southern United States. Methods A pre- and post-intervention survey was administered to preclinical medical students attending an IUD insertion simulation clinic. The survey assessed students' knowledge of

Levonorgestrel Intrauterine Device Use for Medical Indications in Nulliparous Adolescents and Young Adults.

PURPOSE: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective at preventing pregnancy. Levonorgestrel (LNG) IUDs also have beneficial effects on menstrual bleeding and abdominal and pelvic pain. Although there are increasing data on use of IUDs for contraception in adolescents and for medical indications in adults, there are extremely limited data on LNG IUD use for medical indications in adolescents. Our objective is to describe the characteristics and experiences of LNG IUD use in nulliparous adolescents and young women using IUDs for medical indications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective c

Management of a perforated levonorgestrel-medicated intrauterine device--a pharmacokinetic study: case report.

Intrauterine contraception is a widely used, highly effective method of birth control. Uterine perforation is a serious albeit rare complication with the use of an intrauterine device (IUD). Although uterine perforation by the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) has already been described, no plasma LNG concentrations in this setting were reported. Neither has the management of LNG-IUS been commented on to date. Two months after insertion of an LNG-IUS into a 33-year-old woman, it was noted to be in the peritoneal cavity. Laparoscopy for IUD removal was conducted 5 months af

Timing of copper intrauterine device insertion after medical abortion: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare intrauterine device (IUD) use at 6 months in women randomized to receive an intrauterine copper contraceptive 1 week compared with 1 month after medical abortion. METHODS: We recruited women undergoing medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol and choosing the copper IUD for contraception. We randomly assigned participants to "immediate" insertion 1 week after mifepristone or "delayed" insertion 4-6 weeks later. We followed rates of IUD insertion, 6-month utilization, expulsion, removal, and pregnancy. Participants recorded bleeding in a diary for 4 weeks. RESU

Beyond pain medication: striving toward more patient-centered placement of intrauterine devices.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess patient experiences and preferences for counseling, addressing pain and anxiety, and provider support during placement of intrauterine devices (IUDs). STUDY DESIGN: This mixed-methods study included a survey and in-depth interviews of patients undergoing IUD placement. Participants reported pain, satisfaction, and importance of aspects of care during IUD placement. Ten provider behaviors measured on a Likert scale (1-5) sum to create a "provider support score" (range 10-50). We measured pain with categorical variables and a visual analog scale (0-10). We

The effect of intrauterine device presence and other factors in medical treatment success of tuboovarian abscess.

BACKGROUND: To identify the epidemiologic and clinical risk factors associated with failed response to medical treatment in tuboovarian abscess (TOA) patients and whether there is a relationship between the presence of intrauterine device (IUD), duration of use and medical treatment success or not. METHODS: For this study, the medical records of patients diagnosed with TOA and hospitalized in an 8-year period were analyzed retrospectively. The presence of TOA and IUD was confirmed ultrasonographically in all patients. Parenteral antibiotic treatment was initiated as the first step. Patients w

Medical methods for cervical ripening before the removal of intrauterine devices in postmenopausal women: a systematic review.

In China, most women with intrauterine devices (IUDs) ask to have them removed following the menopause. As the cervix is stenotic after the menopause and most IUDs do not have a thread attached, various medical methods are used for cervical ripening prior to IUD removal. A systematic review of the relevant literature was conducted to compare different medical methods for cervical priming with no treatment, or with other methods, prior to IUD removal in postmenopausal women. Multiple electronic databases including the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, MEDLINE, the WHO Repr

Placement of an intrauterine device within 48 hours after early medical abortion-a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices are safe, well-tolerated, and known to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies. At medical abortion, intrauterine devices are placed at a follow-up visit. Patients who miss this visit risk being left without contraception. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate if placement of an intrauterine device within 48 hours of completed medical abortion at up to 63 days' gestation leads to higher user rates at 6 months after the abortion compared with placement at 2 to 4 weeks after abortion. Furthermore, we aimed to compare continued use of intrauterine devices, s
