As a genus of the Asteraceae, Inula is widely distributed all over the world, and several of them are being used in traditional medicines. A number of metabolites were isolated from Inula species, and some of these have shown to possess ranges of pharmacological activities. The genus Inula contains abundant sesquiterpenoids, such as eudesmanes, xanthanes, and sesquiterpenoid dimers and trimers. In addition, other types of terpenoids, flavonoids, and lignins also exist in the genus Inula. Since 2010, more than 300 new secondary metabolites, including several known natural products that were iso

The flower heads of Inula britannica L. of Bulgarian origin afforded sesquiterpene lactones (gaillardin, britannin, I1, 13-dihydroinuchinenolide B, ivalin, pulchellin C), triterpenoids (3-0-palmitates of 160-hydroxylupeol, 16β-hydroxy-β-amyrin, and faradiol) and flavonoids (quercetin, luteolin, luteolin-7-0- glucoside). All compounds are known and they were identified by spectral methods. The observed differences in the chemical content of the chloroform and methanol extracts were also reflected in their free radical scavenging activity, evaluated by DPPH and ABTS assays. The flowers of Inula britannica L. are widely used for their significant antitumour and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the other parts of the plant, including the stems, leaves and roots, remain underutilised. Herein, 18 compounds, including 5 previously undescribed compounds (1-5), were isolated from these underutilised parts, and their structures were elucidated by HRESIMS, NMR and ECD spectroscopic analyses. Several isolated sesquiterpenes (7-9) exhibited significant inhibitory activity against three tumour cell lines. In addition, eight compounds (2-4, 11, 13 and 16-18) showed syne

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial-resistant pathogenic microorganisms are disease causing microbes that cause several diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Currently, these microorganisms cause more than a quarter of the reported diseases worldwide. The other current global health risk is the imbalance generation of free radicals in human physiology, which exposes several millions to oxidative stress diseases like Alzheimer, Cancer, and Diabetes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Inula confertiflora roots, stems, and leaves extrac

Our previous study showed that the methanolic extract of Inula helenium (elecampane) had the potential to induce detoxifying enzymes such as quinine reductase (QR) and glutathione S-transferase. In this study we further fractionated the methanolic extract into hexane-, dichloromethane-, butanol-, and water-soluble fractions according to polarity. The hexane fraction showed the highest QR-inducing activity and also induced glutathione S-transferase in a dose-dependent manner. Its potential to induce the reporter activity suggested an antioxidant response element-mediated mechanism of action in

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The genus Inula comprises more than one hundred species widespread in temperate regions of Europe and Asia. Uses of this genus as herbal medicines have been first recorded by the Greek and Roman ancient physicians. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, from the 20 Inula spp. distributed in China, three are used as Traditional Chinese medicines, named Tumuxiang, Xuanfuhua and Jinfeicao. These medicines are used as expectorants, antitussives, diaphoretics, antiemetics, and bactericides. Moreover, Inula helenium L. which is mentioned in Minoan, Mycenaean, Egyptian/Assyrian

Inula britannica, a Kampo medicine, is prepared from the heads of Compositae plants such as Inula britannica L., which has been used clinically as a remedy for nausea, hiccup and excessive sputum. Here it is shown that administration of Inula britannica improves the survival rate of mice with hepatic injury induced by LPS/PA. It is also suggested that administration of Inula britannica significantly reduces the fluctuation in the amount of cytokine in the spleen of mice with hepatic injuries, and that the Th1/Th2 control effect is related to the inhibitory action of Inula britannica against he

Increased pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress contribute to the pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis (UC). Inula viscosa is a plant with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We investigated the effect of an ethanolic extract of I. viscosa on an experimental UC model created using acetic acid. Rats were divided into four groups of eight: group 1, control; group 2, 3% acetic acid group; group 3, 100 mg/kg sulfasalazine + 3% acetic acid group; group 4, 400 mg/kg I. viscosa + 3% acetic acid. I. viscosa and sulfasalazine were administered by oral gavage and 3% acetic acid was

Inulicin is a sesquiterpene lactone obtained from Inula Japonica L. (Compositae) possesses a fairly wide spectrum of pharmacological action. In doses from 5 to 60 mg/kg it exerts a certain stimulant action on the central nervous system and smooth muscles of the intestine, displays an anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer activity on pathological models of different genesis, and has capillary-strengthening diuretic properties. When given in low doses, the drug did not affect cardiac activity, while in high doses it might inhibit it. Inulicin is relatively little toxic. The LD50 for mice is 476 mg/kg

Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen of high clinical relevance due to its ability to form biofilms, its inherent virulence regulated by quorum-sensing systems, and its multidrug resistance. In the present study, we evaluated the inhibitory potential of nine extracts from Inula species (chloroform and methanolic fractions, including a sesquiterpene lactone-enriched fraction) against biofilm formation and virulence-associated traits of P. aeruginosa PAO1 and three multidrug-resistant clinical isolates, as well as their cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, and ability to af
