Effect of fermentation on Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) toxicity in mice.

Unfortunate bovine fatalities occurring after ingestion of mold-damaged sweetpotatoes preclude the use of the culled tubers in livestock feed. In cattle, mold-damaged sweetpotatoes induce an acute respiratory distress syndrome resulting in asphyxiation. Because of this potential toxicity and the general abundance of culled sweetpotatoes, the detoxification efficacy of ensiling was explored since it is an easy and economically viable technique often applied to preserve livestock feed. Sweetpotato slices with or without mold damage were stored either frozen (to represent unfermented samples) or

Resin glycosides from the yellow-skinned variety of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas).

Native to tropical America, Ipomoea batatas has been cultivated for over 5000 years in Mexico. The yellow-skinned tuber crop variety, with an orange flesh, has a higher nutritional value than potato. Raw sweet potato can cause a purge due to its resin glycoside content. Purification of the chloroform-soluble resin glycosides from the roots of this variety was accomplished by preparative-scale HPLC, which allowed for the collection of six oligosaccharides, batatin VII (1) and batatinosides VII-IX (2-4), all of novel structure, together with the known resin glycosides pescaprein I and batatinosi

Characterization of a polysaccharide from Ipomoea batatas and its in vitro hypoglycemic activity.

A medium-molecular-weight (18.04 kDa) polysaccharide named PSPP1 was isolated and purified from Ipomoea batatas (sweet potato). PSPP1 was found to be primarily composed of fructose, glucose, and arabinose. Further structural analysis revealed that its backbone comprised mainly β-D-Fruf residues, with a minor proportion of α-D-Glcp units, and side chains predominantly attached to the O-6 position of →1,6)-β-D-Fruf-(2 → residues. In vitro, PSPP1 significantly inhibited α-glucosidase activity and restored glucose metabolism parameters in an insulin-resistant HepG2 cell model. Transcriptomic and m

Immunomodulatory and Antioxidant Properties of Ipomoea batatas Flour and Extracts Obtained by Green Extraction.

Sweet potato (SP), Ipomoea batatas Lam, belongs to the Convolvulaceae family. It produces edible storage roots. Currently, orange varieties contribute to improving food systems and managing vitamin A deficiency. Processing of this food crop into flour allows better conservation. However, nutrition health data regarding SP flour obtained by green extraction remains scarce. In this study, we therefore explored its phytochemistry and its associated bioactivity potential for human health. We analyzed the nutritional composition of orange flesh sweet potato (OFSP) flour and assessed the antioxidant

Evaluation of the effects of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) in broiler diets.

Cereal grains such as maize and wheat are used extensively in feed formulations for poultry as the primary source of carbohydrates. High cost of these grains in many developing countries necessitates the evaluation of other ingredients that are grown locally. Sweet potato is one such crop. The study was conducted as a proof of concept experiment to test the hypothesis that in the presence and absence of enzyme, sweet potato roots when included in diets of broiler chickens may affect the total metabolisable energy content of the diets which may exert certain influences on dry matter digestibili

Genetic Diversity of Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) from Portugal, Mozambique and Timor-Leste.

Portugal contributed to the global diffusion of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.). Although it is of minor importance on the Portuguese mainland, it is one of the most common crops in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos and is highly relevant in the Portuguese ex-colonies Mozambique and Timor-Leste. We analyzed the genetic diversity and population structure of sweetpotato from these five geographic provenances using twelve nuclear simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. We studied 45 accessions, 15 of which were collected from farmers' fields in these five regions and 30 of which are held at

In vitro bioaccessibility of beta-carotene in orange fleshed sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, Lam.).

Substitution of white with orange fleshed varieties of sweet potatoes (OFSP) was recently shown to alleviate vitamin A deficiency in children in Africa. However, the relationship between beta-carotene (BC) content of different cultivars of OFSP and its bioavailability is unknown. Here, we used the three phase (oral, gastric and small intestinal) in vitro digestion procedure to examine the bioaccessibility of BC from eight cultivars of boiled OFSP. All-trans BC (all-E-BC) was the only isomer of BC detected in raw roots for cultivars of OFSP with amounts ranging from 112 to 281 microg/g. Boiling

Optimization of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) Chlorogenic Acid Extraction Process and Hypoglycemic Effect Study.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is an active ingredient widely found in plants and has been shown to have potential blood-glucose-lowering effects. However, the research on the efficient extraction processes of CGA from sweet potatoes and its systematic mechanisms underlying hypoglycemic effects is still insufficient. This study optimized the extraction of CGA from various sweet potato parts and varieties using ethanol, and predicted the hypoglycemic mechanism of sweet potato leaves via network pharmacology and molecular docking. The efficacy of the leaf extracts was demonstrated through the in vitro i

Rapid and reliable method of extracting DNA and RNA from sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L). Lam.

A quick, simple and reliable method of extracting DNA from sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) has been developed. The method was applied successfully for extraction of total DNA from leaves and total RNA from leaves and various tissues. The yield of DNA extracted by this procedure was high (about 1 mg/g leaf tissue). The extracted DNA was completely digested by restriction endonucleases indicating the absence of common contaminating compounds. The absorbancy ratios of A260/A230 and A260/A280 of isolated RNA were approx. 2 and the yield was about 0.2 mg/g fresh wt. CIPK and tublin genes we

Node Position Determines Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas [L.] Lam.) Cutting Performance: Toward a Targeted Inverted Planting Strategy.

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas [L.] Lam.) is a vital crop for food security, yet yields in Cuba remain below potential (2.5-10.0 t ha-1) due to suboptimal propagation practices. This study investigated the impact of nodal position (1-22) on root development in stem cuttings of cv. 'INIVIT B-240' under controlled conditions. Root primordia (24 h), fibrous roots (7 days), and storage roots (60 days) were evaluated. Intermediate nodes (8-12) exhibited superior rhizogenic capacity, with node 10 showing the highest root primordia density (3.0 ± 3) and nodes 10-12 producing the most fibrous roots (24.

Advances in Molecular Techniques for Detecting Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) Viruses: A Comprehensive Review.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is an important global food crop, but its production is threatened by numerous viral pathogens. More than 30 RNA and DNA viruses have been reported worldwide, making rapid and accurate detection essential for disease management, epidemiological surveillance, germplasm exchange, and resistance breeding. Although previous reviews have addressed sweet potato viruses and individual diagnostic methods, a comprehensive synthesis of emerging molecular technologies remains limited. This review addresses that gap by critically integrating recent advances from PCR

1,3,5-Tricaffeoylquinic Acid from Ipomoea batatas Vines Induced Ovarian Cancer Cell Apoptosis and Inhibited Endothelial Tube Formation.

Ovarian cancer usually metastasizes from the ovary to adjacent organs through direct invasion with blood vessels formed by endothelial cells. Targeting apoptosis of ovarian cancer and angiogenesis is promising for anticancer therapy. Leaves of Ipomoea sp. have reportedly shown promise in treating ovarian cancer. Here, we investigated the apoptosis-inducing and anti-angiogenic effects of compounds isolated from Ipomoea batatas vines (IBV). Phytochemical examination of IBV led to the isolation and verification of eight compounds (1-8): chlorogenic acid (1), 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid (2), 3,5-dic

Methodology optimization for quantification of total phenolics and individual phenolic acids in sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.) roots.

Phenolic acids are one of the several classes of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds found in sweetpotatoes. Simplified, robust, and rapid methodologies were optimized to quantify total and individual phenolic acids in sweetpotato roots. Total phenolic acid content was quantified spectrophotometrically using both Folin-Denis and Folin-Ciocalteu reagents. The Folin-Ciocalteu reagent gave an overestimation of total phenolic acids due to the absorbance of interfering compounds (that is, reducing sugars and ascorbic acid). Individual phenolic acids were quantified by high-performance liquid
