Iridoids from Gardenia jasminoides.

The dichloromethane extract of the air-dried flowers of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. afforded a new iridoid natural product (1), and a diastereomeric mixture of two new iridoids (2a and 2b) in a 2 : 1 ratio. Their structures were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Antimicrobial tests on 1 indicated that it was moderately active against Candida albicans; slightly active against E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus. aureus, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes; and inactive against Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger.

Iridoids as a Potential Hepatoprotective Class: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Liver disease rates are gradually increasing over the years, becoming a severe public health problem. The indiscriminate use of drugs associated with a rich fat diet, high consumption of alcoholic beverages, and exposure to viral infections and lipid peroxidative products are considered the chief factors for developing hepatic disorders. Owing to the absence of reliable hepatoprotective drugs in the therapeutic arsenal, since they present a high incidence of adverse reactions and/or lack of efficacy in some cases, liver diseases are widely treated with medicinal plants. Among them

Ferulic acid potentiation of two natural iridoids induced PACAP signaling extended the antidepressant effects.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent and debilitating disorder, with fast-onset and sustained antidepressant treatment urgently needed. Recently, we revealed two irriods of geniposide (G) and shanzhiside methyl ester (S), both from the herb Gardenia jasminoides, synergistically elicited rapid antidepressant effects by activating hippocampal PACAP signaling, a novel antidepressant target. Here we investigated the further interaction by ferulic acid (F), the active compound from Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort, an herb frequently paired with Gardenia jasminoides. METHODS: G, S and F were measured b

Molecular insights and ADMET profiling of iridoids as candidate leads for erectile dysfunction therapy.

CONTEXT: Erectile dysfunction (ED) significantly affects male psychosocial health and has an increasing incidence. Although phosphodiesterase 5 (PDEi-5) inhibitors are the first-line therapy, the occurrence of visual side effects resulting from cross-inhibition of the PDE-6 isoform limits their adoption. In this context, the plant Veronica anagallis-aquatica L. emerges as a promising source of bioactive therapeutic compounds. This work investigated the inhibitory potential and selectivity of eight iridoid glycosides from this species against PDE-5 and PDE-6. The results identified catalposide
