Parasympathetic denervation of the iris in Chagas' disease.

The parasympathetic innervation of the iris along with cardiovascular reflexes involving parasympathetic and sympathetic function were studied in 45 patients with Chagas's disease and in 36 controls. The autonomic features in Chagas' disease included 15 with cardiomyopathy, three with megaoesophagus and five with megacolon. None of the patients had orthostatic hypotension. Parasympathetic cardiac reflexes (deep breathing 30:15 ratio, Valsalva) were abnormal. There were exaggerated pupillary responses to dilute pilocarpine. These studies suggest iris parasympathetic denervation and favour more

Iris recognition in the presence of ocular disease.

Iris recognition systems are among the most accurate of all biometric technologies with immense potential for use in worldwide security applications. This study examined the effect of eye pathology on iris recognition and in particular whether eye disease could cause iris recognition systems to fail. The experiment involved a prospective cohort of 54 patients with anterior segment eye disease who were seen at the acute referral unit of the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh. Iris camera images were obtained from patients before treatment was commenced and again at follow-up appointme

Refsum's disease: electron microscopy of an iris biopsy.

Refsum's disease (phytanic acid storage disease) results in an accumulation of lipid as a result of an absence of mitochondrial hydroxylation of phytanic acid. We describe a previously unrecorded electron microscopic study of lipid deposition in the iris pigment epithelium of a patient with Refsum's disease, and lipid was present in other sites within the iris.

The iris - a window into the genetics of common and rare eye diseases.

Visual examination, without instruments, of the eye allows inspection of the iris, sclera, cornea and, through the iris, some abnormalities of the lens and retina. Several hereditary disorders can easily be recognised by characteristic iris changes. This review discusses changes in the iris, visible lens anomalies, and changes in the cornea surrounding the iris. A genetic diagnosis can help with management of diseases. Some conditions are single gene disorders, some are chromosomal rearrangements, and some are abnormalities of fetal development.

CCR5 Blockade in Inflammatory PML and PML-IRIS Associated With Chronic Inflammatory Diseases' Treatments.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a disabling neurologic disorder resulting from the infection of the CNS by JC polyomavirus in immunocompromised individuals. For the last 2 decades, increasing use of immunotherapies leads to iatrogenic PML. Iatrogenic PML is often associated with signs of inflammation at onset (inflammatory PML) and/or after treatment withdrawal immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (PML-IRIS). Although immune reconstitution is a key element for viral clearance, it may also be harmful and induce clinical worsening. A C-C chem

Iris and its relevance to angle closure disease: a review.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible visual impairment, and primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) affects Asians disproportionately. Whereas advances in ocular imaging have identified several anatomical risk factors, our ability to predict PACG still requires considerable improvement. The iris plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of angle closure disease, either through a mechanical or vascular mechanism. Irises of closed-angle eyes inhibit vastly different structural constituents as compared with those of open-angle eyes, thereby effecting variations in biomechanical properties

Iris sector heterochromia as a marker for neural crest disease.

A 6-month-old female infant with biopsy-proved Hirschsprung's disease had associated sector heterochromia of the irides. The association between sector heterochromia and Hirschsprung's disease has been previously reported and both conditions have been ascribed to neural crest defects. Histologic characteristics of the ocular involvement have not previously been reported, to our knowledge. Histopathologic examination of the globes revealed decreased iris stroma, decreased pigmentation in the anterior stroma, and reduced numbers of pigment-producing cells in the affected areas. Both the ocular a

IRIS: methodological assessment of psychopathological disease in a cohort of hirsute women.

BACKGROUND: Hirsutism in females can be a source of considerable psychological distress and a threat to female identity. The aim of our study was to evaluate a possible relationship between facial, total body hair involvement and physical, mental and social well-being during 12 months of follow-up and treatment. Both objective and subjective methods of evaluating hirsutism were used: the Ferriman-Gallwey (FG) scoring method and the questionnaires General Health Questionnaire (GHQ)-12, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Questionnaire (PCOSQ) and SF-12. METHODS: The total of 469 female patients (mean ag

Surgical Management of Iris Bombe in Muscle-Eye-Brain Disease.

A 2-year-old girl with severe muscular dystrophy presented with unilateral eye pain and corneal clouding. She was found to have absent red reflex, hypotonia, cerebral hypoplasia, and iris bombe on ultrasound biomicroscopy, a feature not previously reported in this syndrome. She responded favorably to surgical management. Iris bombe can be a cause of glaucoma in muscle-eye-brain disease. This highlights the importance of incorporating ultrasound biomicroscopy into the diagnostic algorithm of muscle-eye-brain disease and other types of congenital syndromic glaucoma. Tuberculosis IRIS: Pathogenesis, Presentation, and Management across the Spectrum of Disease.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART), while essential in combatting tuberculosis (TB) and HIV coinfection, is often complicated by the TB-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS). Depending on the TB disease site and treatment status at ART initiation, this immune-mediated worsening of TB pathology can take the form of paradoxical TB-IRIS, unmasking TB-IRIS, or CNS TB-IRIS. Each form of TB-IRIS has unique implications for diagnosis and treatment. Recently published studies have emphasized the importance of neutrophils and T cell subtypes in TB-IRIS pathogenesis, alongside the r

CNS TB-IRIS Following Cessation of Adalimumab in an Adolescent With Crohn's Disease.

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome to tuberculosis (TB-IRIS) is an inflammatory response to M. tuberculosis infection that arises following restoration of the immune system and is increasingly recognized as a risk in patients treated with tumor necrosis factor α inhibitors who develop active tuberculosis infection. We present the case of a 19-year-old man treated with adalimumab for Crohn's disease who presented with disseminated miliary tuberculosis. His treatment course was complicated by central nervous system TB-IRIS following cessation of his immunosuppression. We review the pres
