Small Molecules from Medicinal Plant Iris tectorum as Histidine Kinase Inhibitor to Resensitize β-Lactam-Resistant Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Due to the widespread use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the problem of antibiotic resistance has become an increasingly serious global threat. One of the key mechanisms of Escherichia coli resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics is the production of beta-lactamase enzymes, which poses a dilemma for clinicians in selecting antibiotics when faced with resistant bacterial infections. However, research on the reversal of bacterial resistance is limited. METHODS: This study involved the preparation of Iris tectorum extract and detection of its effects on antibiotics sensitivity, extende

Antioxidant properties of the Lebanese plant Iris x germanica L. crude extracts and antagonism of chlorpromazine toxicity on Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Iris x germanica L., which belongs to the Iridaceae family, has been reported in the literature for its antioxidant properties in acellular chemical-antioxidant assays. Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is an antipsychotic drug known to cause adverse reactions in humans. Oxidative stress is among the main mechanisms by which CPZ exerts its toxicity in animal cell models as well as in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study we investigated the protective effects of I. germanica L. crude extracts against CPZ toxicity. We demonstrated that methanolic extracts from rhizome (R-M), leaf (L-M) and flowe

Virome Analysis of Lemon Plants with Vein Clearing Symptoms Reveals Mixed Infection of Citrus Vein Clearing Virus, Iris Domestica Betaflexivirus 1 and Hop Stunt Viroid.

Citrus yellow vein clearing virus (CYVCV) is the causative agent of the yellow vein clearing disease (YVCD), a worldwide and highly destructive disease in lemon (Citrus lemon) and sour orange trees (C. aurantium). The typical symptoms of vein clearing are believed to be associated with CYVCV infection in citrus, so virus-specific diagnostic systems are currently used to confirm infection. In the present study, virome analysis based on high-throughput sequencing (HTS) on a lemon plant showing YVCD revealed mixed infection of CYVCV, iris domestica betaflexyviridae 1 (IDBV), and hop stunt viroid

Selection of plants for optimization of vegetative filter strips treating runoff from turfgrass.

Runoff from turf environments, such as golf courses, is of increasing concern due to the associated chemical contamination of lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and ground water. Pesticide runoff due to fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides used to maintain golf courses in acceptable playing condition is a particular concern. One possible approach to mitigate such contamination is through the implementation of effective vegetative filter strips (VFS) on golf courses and other recreational turf environments. The objective of the current study was to screen ten aesthetically acceptable plant species

Draft genome sequences of bacteria isolated from the Deschampsia antarctica phyllosphere.

Genome analyses are being used to characterize plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria living in different plant compartiments. In this context, we have recently isolated bacteria from the phyllosphere of an Antarctic plant (Deschampsia antarctica) showing ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI), an activity related to the presence of antifreeze proteins (AFPs). In this study, the draft genomes of six phyllospheric bacteria showing IRI activity were sequenced and annotated according to their functional gene categories. Genome sizes ranged from 5.6 to 6.3 Mbp, and based on sequence analysis of the

Protective effects of naringenin and naringin in organ ischemia/reperfusion injuries: a comprehensive narrative review.

Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) refers to a condition in which ischemia is followed by reperfusion, leading to an exacerbation of the initial tissue damage. Currently, there are no specific therapeutic methods for IRI. Phytochemicals from natural products have the potential to develop noble drugs for IRI. Naringenin (NGE) and naringin (NG) are natural dietary flavonoids derived from ethnobotanical plants in Southeast and South Asia. NGE and NG have a wide range of pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects. As research on NGE and NG deepe

Phytoremediation potential of three terrestrial plant species for removal of atrazine, azoxystrobin, and imidacloprid.

Pesticides can move off-target resulting in contamination of sensitive water bodies and causing adverse effects on inhabiting species. Through best management practices, such as the implementation of vegetative buffer strips, off-target movement of pesticides can be decreased, and compound degradation can be increased via phytoremediation. In this study, blueflag iris (Iris versicolor), broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) were planted in soil treated with one of three commonly used pesticides. At 28, 56 and 112 days after treatment (DAT), plants were destructi

The effect of nuciferine on the renal dysfunction following ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is an inevitable consequence of several clinical conditions and surgical procedures including renal transplantation and resuscitation following systemic hypotension. It leads to immediate renal dysfunction and might result in long-term renal damage. Therefore, there is an ongoing effort to mitigate the deleterious effects of the IRI on the kidney. Recently, there has been a recent interest in using natural compounds as alternative remedies in many diseases. Thus, the aim of this research was to study the effect of nuciferine, a phytochemical compound ext

Plant-driven microbiome reorganization sustains multifunctionality of iron-biochar constructed wetlands under chronic PFOA exposure.

Plant capacity to regulate treatment stability and ecological function of iron-biochar (IC) based constructed wetlands (CWs) operated under long-term PFOA exposure remains insufficiently understood. In this study, compared with unplanted system, plant (Iris pseudacorus) increased the dynamic transformation of ammonium and nitrate, limited nitrite accumulation, thus promoting total nitrogen removal, which was, on average, 12.54% higher in planted system. Besides, vegetation increased total phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency by 14.21% and 7.97% on average. These improvement

Proanthocyanidins alleviate ovarian ischemia reperfusion injury by inhibiting ferroptosis through the SIRT1/Nrf2/GPX4 pathway.

Ovarian ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is a dangerous gynecological disorder caused by ovarian torsion from the ovarian mass and surgical manipulation. To improve patient outcomes, it is necessary to explore more effective therapeutic approaches as well as their underlying mechanisms. Proanthocyanidins (PA) are polyphenolic compounds commonly present in fruits, seeds, peels of plants, and leaves. Several studies have demonstrated that PA can alleviate IRI in the liver, intestines, heart, brain, and kidneys. In the ovarian IRI, PA's exact molecular mechanisms have not yet been identified. Fo

Enhancement of Iron Acquisition in Rice by the Mugineic Acid Synthase Gene With Ferric Iron Reductase Gene and OsIRO2 Confers Tolerance in Submerged and Nonsubmerged Calcareous Soils.

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for plants. Plants encounter Fe deficiency when grown in calcareous soil with low Fe availability, leading to reduced crop yield and agricultural problem. Rice acquires Fe from the soil via Strategy I-related system (ferrous ion uptake by OsIRT1) and Strategy II system (ferric ion uptake by chelation). However, rice plants have a weak ability in Fe(III) reduction and phytosiderophore secretion. We previously produced an Fe deficiency-tolerant rice harboring OsIRT1 promoter-refre1/372 (for higher Fe(III) reductase ability) and a 35S promoter-OsIRO2 (for h
