[Irritable bowel syndrome--irritable bowel or irritable mind?].

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common disorders of gastrointestinal tract, affecting significant number of western population. The characteristic features are chronic and(or) recurrent abdominal pain and discomfort associated with changes in the bowel habit with or without bloating. According to Rome Criteria III there is an improved focus on the intestinal transit time which allows for better diagnosis and characterization of patients either with diarrhea, constipation predominant or mixed type IBS. Patients with IBS also frequently manifest various symptoms related to cent

Irritable bowel syndrome: Is it "irritable brain" or "irritable bowel"?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been recognized as one of the most common and best studied disorders among the group of functional gastrointestinal disorders. It is a functional bowel disorder in which abdominal pain or discomfort is associated with defecation or a change in bowel habit. In the Western world, IBS appears to affect up to 20% of the population at any given time but in Asian countries, the median value of IBS prevalence defined by various criteria ranges between 6.5% and 10.1%, and community prevalence of 4% is found in North India. Those attending gastroenterology clinics rep

[Irritable bowel syndrome].

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional digestive disorder affecting 4 to 10% of the population, with a female gender predominance. Although it is a benign disease, it can sometimes considerably impair quality of life particularly in severe cases. Diagnosis should be clinical based on symptoms, with limited complementary examinations for the sole purpose of differential diagnosis elimination. A better understanding of IBS mechanisms has led to the development of various therapeutic strategies. Antispasmodics and transit modifiers are the most commonly st

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder with symptoms including abdominal pain associated with a change in stool form or frequency. The condition affects between 5% and 10% of otherwise healthy individuals at any one point in time and, in most people, runs a relapsing and remitting course. The best described risk factor is acute enteric infection, but irritable bowel syndrome is also more common in people with psychological comorbidity and in young adult women than in the rest of the general population. The pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome is incompletely

[Irritable bowel syndrome].

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorders. The main symptoms are abdominal pain associated with a change in bowel habit. Headache and psychiatric disorders such as mood or anxiety disorders are often associated with IBS. Genetic predisposition, sensomotoric dysfunction, altered enteric inflammation and immune activation and disturbance of the brain-gut interaction are the most important pathogenetic factors. The diagnosis requires the new symptom-based Rome-III-criteria. Diagnostic testing primarily depends on the patients complaints, clin

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Conceptually, the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been considered a brain-gut functional disorder, but this paradigm is under serious challenge. There is increasing evidence that organic disease of the gastrointestinal tract can be identified in subsets of patients who fulfil the Rome criteria for IBS. Evidence for subtle inflammatory bowel disease, serotonin dysregulation, bacterial overgrowth and central dysregulation continue to accumulate. The underlying causes of IBS remain to be adequately identified, but postinfectious IBS is a clear-cut entity. Furthermore, a genetic contribution to

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common 'functional' gastrointestinal disorders accounting for 3% of all primary care consultations, with a strong female predominance. Although most of the literature comes from Western industrialized societies, when it has been looked for, this disorder appears to be equally common in the Third World. It is characterized by chronic abdominal pain or discomfort associated with disordered bowel habit and visceral hypersensitivity. Anxiety and somatization are more common in IBS than in the general population and may encourage consultation; howev

Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Because treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients can be frustrating to the clinician and patient as well, the physician should strive to gain the patient's confidence with a concise, appropriate work-up and by offering reassurance and education that IBS is a functional disorder without significant long-term health risks. First-line treatment should be aimed at treating the most bothersome symptom. Tricyclic antidepressants are superior to placebo in reducing abdominal pain scores, as well as improving global symptom severity. Loperamide is superior to placebo in managing IBS-associ

Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

I believe there are four essential elements in the management of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): to establish a good physician-patient relationship; to educate patients about their condition; to emphasize the excellent prognosis and benign nature of the illness; and to employ therapeutic interventions centering on dietary modifications, pharmacotherapy, and behavioral strategies tailored to the individual. Initially, I establish the diagnosis, exclude organic causes, educate patients about the disease, establish realistic expectations and consistent limits, and involve patients i

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent disorders of gut-brain interaction, characterized by recurrent abdominal pain or abdominal discomfort associated with altered bowel habits in the absence of identifiable structural disease. IBS affects ~4-11% of the global population and is associated with substantial healthcare utilization, impaired quality of life and considerable socioeconomic burden. IBS is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous condition caused by dysregulated bidirectional communication within the gut-brain axis. Altered gastrointestinal motility, visceral h

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common functional bowel disorders, and has a substantial impact on patients' daily lives, as well as a big economic impact on society. It is characterised by abdominal pain, bloating and abdominal distention and altered bowel movements, with a predominance of diarrhoea, constipation, or alternation of these signs, which cannot be explained by a structural or biochemical abnormality. Its aetiopathogenesis and pathophysiological mechanism are unknown. The disease affects 5%-10% of healthy individuals at any given time and, in most people, has a relapsi

Irritable bowel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) varies depending on the criteria used to diagnose it, but it ranges from about 5% to 20%. IBS is associated with abnormal gastrointestinal motor function and enhanced visceral perception, as well as psychosocial and genetic factors. People with IBS often have other bodily and psychiatric symptoms, and have an increased likelihood of having unnecessary surgery compared with people without IBS. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical question: What are the effects of treatmen

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that leads to crampy pain, gassiness, bloating, and changes in bowel habits in the absence of any currently identifiable organic disorder. Patients with IBS may be classified by their predominant bowel habit: diarrhea-predominant, constipation-predominant, or IBS with alternating bowel movements. IBS is often associated with stress or anxiety. Although IBS can be frustrating and concerning to patients with this disorder, it does not cause permanent harm to the intestines and does not lead to a serious disease such as cancer.

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common diagnoses made in the primary care setting and is responsible for up to 40% of referrals to gastroenterologists. Approximately 70% of persons who meet the diagnostic criteria for IBS do not seek health care, and the remaining account for 12% of visits to primary care providers. IBS is a functional bowel disordered comprising abdominal pain associated with defecation or a change in bowel habit with features of disordered defecation and distension in the absence of any demonstrable abnormality. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings a

[Current issues on irritable bowel syndrome: diet and irritable bowel syndrome].

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorders. It is a multifactorial disorder with its pathogenesis attributed to abnormal gastrointestinal motility, low-grade inflammation, visceral hypersensitivity, communication in the gut-brain axis, and so on. Traditionally, IBS has been treated with diet and lifestyle modification, fiber supplementation, psychological therapy, and pharmacological treatment. Carbohydrates are intermingled with a wide range of regularly consumed food including grains such as rye and wheat, vegetables, fruits, and legumes

Postinfection Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Following acute gastroenteritis (AGE) due to bacteria, viruses, or protozoa, a subset of patients develop new onset Rome criteria positive irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), called postinfection IBS (PI-IBS). The pooled prevalence of PI-IBS following AGE was 11.5%. PI-IBS is the best natural model that suggests that a subset of patients with IBS may have an organic basis. Several factors are associated with a greater risk of development of PI-IBS following AGE including female sex, younger age, smoking, severity of AGE, abdominal pain, bleeding per rectum, treatment with antibiotics, anxiety, dep
