Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a rare congenital cardiomyopathy resulting from an arrest in normal endomyocardial embryogenesis. The diagnosis can be made echocardiographically, and the entity may be associated with problems of cardiac rhythm. We describe two illustrative cases, with Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome in one, and left bundle branch block in the other. We emphasize that children with problems of rhythm and findings suggestive for left ventricular cardiomyopathy, either hypertrophic or dilated; should be investigated to exclude isolated noncompaction of the v

A 66-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of left ventricular failure and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia. Two-dimensional echocardiography demonstrated prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses, findings consistent with noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium. Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy demonstrated a defect in the anterobasal left ventricular segment. Coronary angiogram was normal, but the left ventriculogram showed an aneurysm in the anterior myocardial segments. This is the first reported case with isolated noncompaction of the ventricular my

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is frequently mistaken for other cardiomyopathies. We report a case of a 49-year-old woman admitted to hospital for heart failure and initially given the diagnosis of apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In this case, myocardial contrast echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging played a pivotal role in establishing the diagnosis of isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium.

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (NVM) is a rare disorder of endomyocardial morphogenesis characterized by numerous, prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. It is commonly associated with congenital heart disease, but the isolated form (INVM) is not associated with other structural heart diseases. Clinical reports of INVM have been limited to a few case reports and small series of pediatric patients. INVM is considered to be a form of congenital abnormal endomyocardial morphogenesis caused by abnormal cessation of the embryonic development of the ventricular myoc

A female infant with isolated noncompaction of ventricular myocardium who developed ventricular tachyarrhythmia is described. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was shown by electrocardiography. At 9 months of age, the patient suddenly developed cardiac arrest. Electrocardiography following resuscitation with DC cardioversion demonstrated sinus rhythm without delta wave. The QT interval was normal. Frequent premature ventricular captures caused ventricular fibrillation. DC cardioversion was necessary to terminate frequent attacks of ventricular fibrillation until the introduction of beta blockers

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is an unclassified cardiomyopathy and is thought to be due to arrest of myocardial morphogenesis. Fatal ventricular arrhythmias may occur in approximately half of the patients and account for half of the death in this disorder. In this report, we describe a patient with isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium in whom implantation of automatic cardioverter defibrillator was thought to be effective to prevent the risk of sudden cardiac death.

We describe a patient with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle who presented with worsening congestive heart failure and was successfully treated with heart transplantation. The prognosis for these patients is poor because of accelerated event rates of fatal arrhythmias, thromboemboli, and profound left ventricular decompensation. Only 7 patients with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle have been reported to have undergone heart transplantation. Herein we describe a patient with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle who underwent successful heart transplantation.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of ultrafast computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for anatomical and pathophysiological diagnosis of isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium (INVM) compared with other imaging modalities including thallium myocardial imaging. Six patients, three sets of siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 18 years, were included in this study. Two-dimensional echocardiograms revealed numerous prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses in one or more ventricular wall segments in all cases. Thallium-2

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a rare unclassified cardiomyopathy and is thought to be due to arrest of myocardial morphogenesis. In fetal life, it is characterized by an excessively prominent trabecular meshwork and deep intratrabecular recesses, and occurs in the left ventricle in the absence of structural heart disease. Echocardiography provides evidence for the diagnosis. The noncompacted ventricular myocardium may be accompanied by depressed ventricular function, systemic embolism, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, left bundle branch block, and ventricular arrhythmi

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is defined as a rare cardiomyopathy caused by intrauterine arrest of compaction of the myocardial fibers and meshwork, an important process in myocardial development, in absence of any coexisting congenital heart lesions. A lot of controversies exist about diagnostic criteria, nomenclature, origin, pathogenesis, and prognosis of this disease. Here, we describe an adult patient with isolated left ventricular noncompaction who presented with worsening congestive heart failure and was successfully treated with heart transplantation.

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is an unclassified cardiomyopathy and is thought to be due to arrest of myocardial morphogenesis. Fetal arrhythmias may occur in approximately half of the patients and account for the death in this disorder. We describe a patient with isolated noncompaction of the right ventricular myocardium in whom implantation of biventricular pacemaker was thought to be effective to prevent the risk of sudden cardiac death and complications.

A 45-year-old man presented to the hospital with typical chest pain compatible with myocardial infarction. An electrocardiogram showed left bundle branch block. The patient underwent urgent coronary angiography, which revealed no significant coronary artery disease. Echocardiography showed noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium. This unusual case of angina occurring in a patient with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle is discussed with a review of the literature.

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (INVM) was diagnosed with delayed enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a 12-year-old boy, who developed dyspnea and syncope while running. Chest radiograph showed no marked cardiomegaly, but revealed bilateral consolidation caused by aspiration pneumonia. Laboratory findings showed plasma level of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) of 768 pg/dl. Echocardiography showed a slightly thickened myocardium, but the trabecular meshwork region was unclear. He was given a diagnosis of unknown heart failure. His dyspnea and cyanosis im

A 48-year-old man was diagnosed with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium. He had been suffering from dyspnea during light exercise since early February 1997, which worsened with time. Eventually, he visited our hospital on February 14. He was admitted urgently because orthopnea was observed and chest radiogram showed massive left pleural effusion. The diagnoses were pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculous pleuritis. Echocardiography at admission showed generalized hypokinesis of the left ventricle, so we suspected that his condition was complicated by myocarditis. However,

Isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium (INVM), first described in 1984, is an unclassified cardiomyopathy and is assumed to occur as an arrest of the compaction process during the normal development of the heart. Between weeks 5 to 8 of human fetal development, the ventricular myocardium undergoes gradual compaction with transformation of the relatively large intertrabecular spaces into capillaries while the residual spaces within the trabecular meshwork gradually flatten or disappear. In the case of INVM, the spaces within the intertrabecular meshwork persist while no other

There are up to 3 prominent trabeculations in the normal left ventricle. Sometimes, left ventricle has excessive trabeculations and intertrabecular recesses. This appearance is called as noncompaction or hypertrabeculation. It may be together with other structural cardiac abnormalities (non-isolated) or without them (isolated). Here we present a rare case with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium. Rarity comes from its coexistence with essential thrombocythemia. In addition, it was complicated by thromboembolic cerebrovascular accident.

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited disorder characterized by QT prolongation and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia known as torsade de pointes. The underlying cellular mechanism is prolonged ventricular repolarization caused by mutations in genes encoding cardiac ion channels or membrane adaptors. The disease can be diagnosed at any age and, very rarely, it can be diagnosed prenatally or in the neonatal period. Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (INCVM) is defined as the presence of prominent ventricular trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses withi
