On the respiratory quotient (RQ) of termites (Insecta: Isoptera).

The respiratory quotient (RQ) at 28 degrees C was determined by Warburg manometry in 23 species of termites from the Mbalmayo Forest Reserve (Cameroon) and three sub-tropical species cultured under laboratory conditions in the U.K. or freshly collected in Australia. The data are tabulated with other recently reported RQs (determined by manometry or GC) and with measured CH(4) emission rates to provide a survey of 29 species covering both lower and higher termites in all major trophic (functional) categories. In all species, except the wood-feeding Coptotermes acinaciformis and the soil-feeding

Horizontal Transfer of Spinosad in Coptotermes formosanus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae).

Slow-acting and nonrepellent termiticides are possible candidates for nestmate to nestmate transfer called horizontal transfer. For the horizontal transfer study of spinosad, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki was released in sand and soil at 1, 25, and 50 ppm Entrust(®) for 1 h and then mixed with healthy untreated termites for 21 d at the ratio of 1:1. Donor and recipient termites began to contact and groom each other immediately after release. Mortality of termites was recorded at 1, 3, 7, and 14 d after treatment. Spinosad was more effectively transferred in sand than in soil. In sand at 25 an

Postecdysis Sclerotization of Mouthparts of the Formosan Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae).

In termites, it is challenging to recognize the incidence of molting in workers because of their successive stationary molt, asynchronous molting among individuals, cryptic behavior, a soft and poorly sclerotized cuticle, and they immediately consume the shed exuvia of nestmates. This study describes a method in which the degree of sclerotization of the mouthparts in newly molted workers of the Formosan subterranean termite can be quantified and used to determine if an individual has recently molted, within a 36-h time frame. Changes in the tanning of mouthparts over time were used as a measur

To DGC or not to DGC: oxygen guarding in the termite Zootermopsis nevadensis (Isoptera: Termopsidae).

The ability of some insects to engage in complex orchestrations of tracheal gas exchange has been well demonstrated, but its evolutionary origin remains obscure. According to a recently proposed hypothesis, insects may employ spiracular control of gas exchange to guard tissues against long-term oxidative damage by using the discontinuous gas-exchange cycle (DGC) to limit internal oxygen partial pressure (PO2). This manuscript describes a different approach to oxygen guarding in the lower termite Zootermopsis nevadensis. These insects do not display a DGC but respond to elevated oxygen concentr

Evaluation of growth and foraging in laboratory colonies of Coptotermes gestroi (Isoptera, Rhinotermitidae).

Coptotermes gestroi is an exotic species in Brazil that forages on several food items at the same time. Different laboratory tests were performed with 6-year-old colonies of this termite in order to follow the development and displacement of these colonies, considering which castes and instars were transferred or moved from their original chamber. Two bioassays were carried out, one with similar alternative foods (Pinus sp. sawdust), and the other with different alternative foods (large block of Pinus taeda and small block of Pinus elliottii). The colonies of C. gestroi did not show preference

Potential of natural products and their derivatives to control Formosan subterranean termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae).

Twenty-nine natural products and their derivatives were tested for both contact and vapor toxicity against the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae). Five natural products at 0.5% (wt:wt) in petri dish contact assay caused 100% mortality within 3 d. In vapor form, only three chemicals (styrallyl alcohol, 2-phenyl-2-propanol, and l-carvone) at 0.25 microl/liter air caused > 90% mortality in 3 d when tested on exposed termites: However, when termites were shielded by wood and soil, only one chemical, tetrahydrocarvone at 25 microl/liter air cau

Cryptotermes brevis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in the Azores: lessons after 2 yr of monitoring in the Archipelago.

The dispersal flights of West Indian drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) were surveyed in the major cities of Azores. The sampling device used to estimate termite density consisted of a yellow adhesive trap (size 45 by 24 cm), placed with an artificial or natural light source in a dark attic environment. In addition, data from two other projects were used to improve the knowledge about the geographical distribution of the species. The level of infestation in the two main Azorean towns differed, with high levels in the houses of Angra do Heroísmo, whereas in

A NEW APICAL MICROTUBULE-ASSOCIATED ORGANELLE IN THE STERNAL GLAND OF ZOOTERMOPSIS NEVADENSIS (HAGEN), ISOPTERA.

The apical portion of the columnar cells of the sternal gland of the termite Zootermopsis nevadensis (Hagen) has been examined with the electron microscope. The cell surface abutting the cuticle is thrown into ridges upon which stand microvilli. Sections show a network of smooth membrane-bound cisternae penetrating the interior of the microvilli. At the bottom of the crevasses between the ridges, an inpocketing of the cell membrane is often found. This is surrounded by a 40-mmicro electron-opaque zone that is the insertion of a 22-mmicro microtubular component of the cell cytoplasm. The pouch-

Repellent, antifeedant, and toxic activities of Lantana camara leaf extract against Reticulitermes flavipes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae).

This study investigated biological activity of chloroform extract of dry Lantana camara 'Mozelle' leaves against the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), an important structural pest. Repellent activity was assessed using a paper-disc choice test and a sand arena choice test. Antifeedant and toxic properties were assessed using a no-choice paper test and a topical application method. In the choice tests, significantly fewer termites made contact with treated paper-discs at test concentrations > or = 0.016 mg/cm2 (equivalent to 0.0023 wt:wt) or tunneled into treated s

Vitality of mycobionts and photobionts after passing through the digestive tract of Constrictotermes cyphergaster (Isoptera) workers.

Termites are among the insects that consume lichens and may be potential dispersers of these symbionts. This study evaluated the vitality of photobionts and mycobionts after passing through the digestive tract of Constrictotermes cyphergaster. The percentage of live and dead algae was verified throughout the alimentary canal of 450 workers, originating from five sampled colonies in the Caatinga Dry Forest, NE, Brazil. A progressive growth in algae mortality was observed in the crop, paunch and rectum, however more than 40% of the algae found in faeces presented signs of vitality. Photobiont mo

Chemical composition and biological activities of soldiers of the Brazilian termite species, Nasutitermes macrocephalus (Isoptera: Natutitermitinae).

The defensive secretion of the frontal gland from termite soldiers is a mixture of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and diterpenes, the latter being the most representative. Analyses of the dichloromethane extract from soldiers of the Brazilian termite, Nasutitermes macrocephalus (Silvestri, 1903) (Isoptera, Nasutitermitinae), described for the first time, allowed to identify the presence of two monoterpenes (alpha-pinene and limonene) and two sesquiterpenes (beta-trans-caryophyllene and gamma-selinene) [corrected] by GC-EIMS, and the isolation of one rippertane and six trinervitane diterpenes by

Description of two new species of Termes (Isoptera: Termitidae) from Colombia and Venezuela using morphological and mitochondrial data.

Two new species of the genus Termes Linnaeus are described through an integrative approach, combining whole mitogenome sequencing and comparative morphology across all neotropical congeneric species. Our maximum-likelihood phylogenetic reconstruction places the two new species in a clade sister to the T. fatalis species complex. Termes chocoensissp. nov. was found along the Pacific coast of Colombia, and Termes atlanticussp. nov. near the Atlantic coast and in Venezuela. Their soldiers differ from those of other Termes species in terms of head, pronotum, and mandible measurements. Workers exhi

Development and comparative morphology of the reproductive system in different aged males of the drywood termite Cryptotermes brevis (Blattaria, Isoptera, Kalotermitidae).

Termites are eusocial cockroaches, which have received great attention due to their diversity of reproductive strategies. Although these novelties allow new interpretations concerning the mating biology of these insects, studies highlighting the structure of the reproductive system are limited to some termite lineages. Here we provide the first comparative analysis of the reproductive system of a drywood termite, using different aged males of Cryptotermes brevis as models. This species represents an important structural pest in tropical regions, and most aspects of its reproductive biology rem

Comparison of localized injections of spinosad and selected insecticides for the control of Cryptotermes brevis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in naturally infested structural mesocosms.

We investigated the efficacy of various chemical injections against Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in hardwood shipping pallets. We had three principle interests: efficacy in whole structures, relative efficacy of the active ingredients, and whether acoustic evidence augmented treatment site selection. Infested pallets were delineated into boards with four monitoring sites each. Six chemical treatments were compared: chlorpyrifos aerosol, aqueous disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT), resmethrin aerosol, distilled water (control), and two treatments of spinosad SC (on

Identification of two haplotypes of cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII) gene of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), in southern Mississippi.

BACKGROUND: Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki was accidentally introduced into the United States from Asia. The introduction of the pest has brought significant economic consequences. During the past decade, Mississippi has become a significantly infested state, partly due to the proximity to coastal port cities such as New Orleans. This study was initiated to investigate the origin and infestation route of C. formosanus in southern Mississippi. RESULTS: Twenty-eight colonies (21 colonies from Mississippi, six from Louisiana, one from China) were collected. Sequencing and analysis of 112 sequenc

Termite cellulases: potential target for screening of natural termiticides.

Among the methods tested for termite eradication, termiticides derived from plants are particularly noteworthy. These termiticides represent an effective strategy for insect management, causing minimal environmental harm and posing less risk to human health than widely used chemical controls. The present study aims to obtain crude protein extracts from termites and to characterize their cellulolytic activities for their use in the bioprospecting of natural termiticides. Adult individuals were collected in wood fragments, identified, selected, and sectioned to obtain two protein extracts: one s
