The Effectiveness of Isometric Contractions Compared With Isotonic Contractions in Reducing Pain For In-Season Athletes With Patellar Tendinopathy.

Clinical Scenario: Patellar tendinopathy is a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting the lower-extremities and a difficult condition to manage for athletes that are in season. To facilitate improvement in function and to decrease pain, initial treatment for patellar tendinopathy is typically conservative. Traditional interventions may include eccentric training, cryotherapy, patellar counterforce straps, oral anti-inflammatories, injectable agents, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, orthotics, therapeutic ultrasound, and extracorporeal shockwave. In addition, recent literature suggests that impl

Plasma-renin response to isotonic volume contraction in young salt-sensitive normotensive men.

Salt-sensitive persons have lower plasma renin activity than salt-resistant persons and their plasma renin activity increases less with a low sodium diet or volume depletion, compared to salt-resistant individuals. However, the time course of the renin response to acute volume contraction has not been studied in humans. Therefore, we designed an acute study in salt-sensitive and salt-resistant normotensive volunteers, in which we examined the renin response to isotonic volume contraction. Twenty-four previously characterized salt-resistant (n = 13) and salt-sensitive (n = 11) persons were plac

The Effects of K(+) Channel Blockade on Eccentric and Isotonic Twitch and Fatiguing Contractions in situ.

K(+) channel blockers like 3,4-diaminopyridine (DAP) can double isometric muscle force. Functional movements require more complex concentric and eccentric contractions, however the effects of K(+) channel blockade on these types of contractions in situ are unknown. Extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were stimulated in situ with and without DAP in anesthetized rats and fatigability was addressed using a series of either concentric or eccentric contractions. During isotonic protocols (5-100% load), DAP significantly shifted shortening- and maximum shortening velocity-load curves upward and

Differential effects of isometric and isotonic contraction on water- and hemoglobin oxygenation-related mri responses in skeletal muscle.

PURPOSE: Skeletal muscle responses to exercise depend on contraction mode, which alters the balance between perfusion, oxygenation, and metabolic demand. However, how these physiological responses differ across muscles remains unclear. This study investigated contraction mode-dependent MRI responses in lower-leg muscles using quantitative T2*, T2, and T2' measurements. METHODS: Nineteen healthy female participants performed isometric and isotonic plantar flexion in a randomized crossover design. MRI measurements were obtained during inter-set rest periods and the post-exercise recovery phase

Serratus anterior and lower trapezius muscle activities during multi-joint isotonic scapular exercises and isometric contractions.

CONTEXT: Proper scapular function during humeral elevation, such as upward rotation, external rotation, and posterior tilting of the scapula, is necessary to prevent shoulder injury. However, the appropriate intensity of rehabilitation exercise for the periscapular muscles has yet to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: To identify the serratus anterior, lower trapezius, infraspinatus, and posterior deltoid muscle activities during 2 free-motion exercises using 3 intensities and to compare these muscle activities with isometric contractions during quadruped shoulder flexion and external rotation and abdu

Load- and frequency-dependent impairments to isotonic power are greater than isometric torque following concentric-eccentric fatiguing contractions in humans.

Prolonged low-frequency force depression (PLFFD) is the disproportionate loss of force in response to low frequencies (e.g., <20 Hz) of activation compared to high frequencies (e.g., >50 Hz) following fatiguing contractions. While traditionally assessed using isometric contractions, the effect of PLFFD during dynamic contractions is much less explored. The purpose was to assess PLFFD at two loads (unloaded and 12.5% of maximal voluntary contraction) during dynamic isotonic and isometric contractions following a fatiguing task. Eighteen participants (23.3 ± 1.6 yr, 6 females) performed continuo

Central command increases muscle sympathetic nerve activity more to contracting than noncontracting muscle during rhythmic isotonic leg exercise.

We have previously shown that the increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) to contracting muscle during sustained isometric exercise is due primarily to central command and that contracting muscle does not express a metaboreceptor-driven increase in MSNA. Here we tested the hypothesis that MSNA increases to the contracting muscle also during rhythmic isotonic exercise, in which muscle metabolites will not accumulate because the contraction is performed without external load. MSNA was recorded from the common peroneal nerve in 10 participants, and negative-going sympathetic spikes w

Construction of Constant-Load (Isotonic) and Constant-Velocity (Isokinetic) Torque-Velocity-Power Profiles In vivo for the Rat Plantar Flexors.

Understanding the torque-velocity-power relationship of muscle is critical for assessing dynamic muscle performance, which has implications for health and disease. While dynamometry studies in humans use isokinetic (constant velocity) or isotonic (constant load) contractions to assess this relationship, rodent models have almost exclusively relied on isokinetic contractions due to the complexity of running isotonic load clamp experiments on commercially available systems. Isotonic contractions better align with the constant-load conditions of movements that occur outside the laboratory. Here,

Surface Electromyography Monitoring of Muscle Changes in Male Basketball Players During Isotonic Training.

Physiological indicators are increasingly employed in sports training. However, studies on surface electromyography (sEMG) primarily focus on the analysis of isometric contraction. Research on sEMG related to isotonic contraction, which is more relevant to athletic performance, remains relatively limited. This paper examines the changes in the isotonic contraction performance of the male upper arm muscles resulting from long-term basketball training using the sEMG metrics. We recruited basketball physical education (B-PE) and non-PE majors to conduct a controlled isotonic contraction experimen

Isometric exercise induces analgesia and reduces inhibition in patellar tendinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Few interventions reduce patellar tendinopathy (PT) pain in the short term. Eccentric exercises are painful and have limited effectiveness during the competitive season. Isometric and isotonic muscle contractions may have an immediate effect on PT pain. METHODS: This single-blinded, randomised cross-over study compared immediate and 45 min effects following a bout of isometric and isotonic muscle contractions. Outcome measures were PT pain during the single-leg decline squat (SLDS, 0-10), quadriceps strength on maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), and measures of cortic

Understanding Platysma Muscle Contraction Pattern and Its Relationship to Platysmal Banding: A Real-Time Ultrasound Study.

BACKGROUND: Addressing neck contouring with surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic procedures includes understanding the origin of platysmal banding. A theory was postulated to explain this phenomenon by isometric vs isotonic muscular contraction patterns. However, no scientific proof had been provided to date for its correctness. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to confirm the correctness of the platysmal banding theory based on isometric vs isotonic muscular contractions. METHODS: Eighty platysma muscles from 40 volunteers (15 males and 25 females) were investigated (mean age 41.8; SD 15.

Do Differences in Levels, Types, and Duration of Muscle Contraction Have an Effect on the Degree of Post-exercise Depression?

We conducted two experiments to determine how differences in muscle contraction levels, muscle contraction types, and movement duration affect degree of post-exercise depression (PED) after non-exhaustive, repetitive finger movement. Twelve healthy participants performed repetitive abduction movements of the right index finger at 2 Hz. In experiment 1, we examined the effects of muscle contraction levels at 10, 20, and 30% maximum voluntary contraction and the effects of muscle contraction types at isotonic and isometric contraction. In experiment 2, we examined the effects of movement duratio

Effects of modulation of nitric oxide on rat diaphragm isotonic contractility during hypoxia.

Nitric oxide (NO) is essential for optimal myofilament function of the rat diaphragm in vitro during active shortening. Little is known about the role of NO in muscle contraction under hypoxic conditions. Hypoxia might increase the NO synthase (NOS) activity within the rat diaphragm. We hypothesized that NO plays a protective role in isotonic contractile and fatigue properties during hypoxia in vitro. The effects of the NOS inhibitor N(G)-monomethyl-l-arginine (l-NMMA), the NO scavenger hemoglobin, and the NO donor spermine NONOate on shortening velocity, power generation, and isotonic fatigab

Muscle fatigue, bioenergetic responses and metabolic economy during load- and velocity-based maximal dynamic contractions in young and older adults.

We evaluated whether task-dependent, age-related differences in muscle fatigue (contraction-induced decline in normalized power) develop from differences in bioenergetics or metabolic economy (ME; mass-normalized work/mM ATP). We used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to quantify intracellular metabolites in vastus lateralis muscle of 10 young and 10 older adults during two maximal-effort, 4-min isotonic (20% maximal torque) and isokinetic (120°s-1 ) contraction protocols. Fatigue, inorganic phosphate (Pi), and pH (p ≥ 0.213) differed by age during isotonic contractions. However, older had less

Bladder motility and efferent nerve activity during isotonic and isovolumic recording in the cat.

1. Bladder motility and pelvic nerve efferent activity were recorded in anaesthetized cats under isotonic or isovolumic conditions. In isotonic conditions the bladder was connected to a reservoir and fluid entering or leaving the bladder was monitored for 8 min using different heads of pressure (isotonic recording). Under isovolumic conditions fixed volumes were injected into the bladder and pressure changes recorded (micturition contractions). 2. In isotonic conditions, at low pressures the bladder filled to a roughly constant level, and then developed small amplitude oscillatory contractions

Aerobic and anaerobic correlates of mechanical work by gastrocnemius muscles of the aquatic amphibian Xenopus laevis.

Isolated, saline-perfused gastrocnemius muscles of Xenopus laevis were used to assess the relationships between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism during conditions of rest, isotonic contraction and recovery. The major part (85%) of the energy used during 25 min of isotonic contractions in the saline-perfused muscles was from anaerobic rather than aerobic sources. However, the small contribution made by oxidative metabolism during activity can be attributed, in part at least, to limitations imposed by the rate of perfusion and the low O2 capacity of the perfusate. The respiratory exchange ratio

Attenuated fatigue in slow twitch skeletal muscle during isotonic exercise in rats with chronic heart failure.

During isometric contractions, slow twitch soleus muscles (SOL) from rats with chronic heart failure (chf) are more fatigable than those of sham animals. However, a muscle normally shortens during activity and fatigue development is highly task dependent. Therefore, we examined the development of skeletal muscle fatigue during shortening (isotonic) contractions in chf and sham-operated rats. Six weeks following coronary artery ligation, infarcted animals were classified as failing (chf) if left ventricle end diastolic pressure was >15 mmHg. During isoflurane anaesthesia, SOL with intact blood

Effects of muscle pain induced by glutamate injections during sustained clenching on the contraction pattern of masticatory muscles.

AIMS: To evaluate the contraction pattern of masticatory muscles during sustained clenching tasks with or without experimental pain induced by glutamate injection into the masseter muscle. It was hypothesized that acute muscle pain could induce compensatory changes in the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masticatory muscles. METHODS: Fifteen volunteers (seven males, mean age ± SD = 29.7 ± 1.1 years; eight females, mean age ± SD = 23.5 ± 1.2 years) were recruited in a crossover experimental study. All subjects participated in two randomized 20-minute experimental sessions. Each subject
