[Use of isotonic NaCl solution in patients with acute rhinosinusitis].

UNLABELLED: The mucous membrane of the nose and paranasal sinuses has several important physiological functions. Inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses impairs filtration, humidification and warming of the inhaled air. It also affects the beating of cilia and the mucociliary clearance within the nose and lumen of the sinuses. The result is impairment of the mechanism by which the removal of the stagnant pathological discharge from the paranasal sinuses and of foreign matter (environmental pollutants) from the nasal mucosa would be otherwise effected. The use of special products to clea

The role of isotonic and hypertonic solutions in the resuscitation of shocked patients.

The role of intravenous salt solutions in resuscitation is reviewed historically. A brief account of the pathophysiology of shock is given. The particular use of hypertonic solutions in the resuscitation of severely shocked patients is reviewed and its mechanism of action discussed. It is considered that hypertonic solutions may find a role in any future major military conflict. Two hypertonic solutions that are suggested for consideration in this context are 12% sodium chloride (2 mmol/ml) and 8.4% sodium bicarbonate (1 mmol/ml).

Electrolyte vs. glucose-electrolyte isotonic solutions for oral rehydration therapy in horses.

An isotonic electrolyte solution with a composition similar to equine sweat was compared to an isotonic glucose-glycine-electrolyte solution for oral rehydration therapy in exercising horses. Ten horses were dehydrated by using frusemide and allocated randomly to receive 4 different oral solutions: isotonic sweat-like electrolyte solution, half-strength hypotonic electrolyte solution, isotonic glucose-glycine-electrolyte solution, and plain water. Solutions were given by nasogastric tube using the same volume as the bodyweight lost by each horse. Blood samples were collected before and through

The hemodynamic and cardiovascular effects of near-drowning in hypotonic, isotonic, or hypertonic solutions.

It has been postulated that near-drowning in fresh water may cause hemodilution and hypervolemia due to the hypotonicity of the aspirated water. In contrast, near-drowning in seawater, because of its hypertonicity, may lead to hypovolemic shock. We evaluated the hemodynamic effects of the instillation of 20 mL/kg of solutions of various tonicities (sterile water, 0.225% sodium chloride, 0.45% sodium chloride, normal saline, 2% sodium chloride, and 3% sodium chloride) into the lungs of anesthetized dogs and compared the results with those for control animals who were made anoxic for five minute

Positive nitrogen balance using isotonic crystalline amino acid solution.

A study of 50 patients was undertaken to determine the effects of an isotonic 5 percent crystalline amino acid solution on nitrogen balance. Patients were divided randomly into two groups: 24 receiving amino acids and 25 receiving dextrose in water. (One patient in the treatment group dropped out after one day of intravenous therapy.) Administration of amino acids postoperatively maintained nitrogen balance, as compared with controls. No untoward metabolic changes or other complications occurred. Amino acid peripherally administered is an alternate source of calories and nitrogen. It is of val

Ringer-Lactate solution versus isotonic saline solution on mucociliary function after nasal septal surgery.

Irrigation with isotonic saline is one of the most frequently used solutions after nasal surgery. However, the effect of saline solutions on mucociliary clearance is not well known. In a previous study, it was found that isotonic saline solution had a negative effect on ciliary beat frequency but Ringer-Locke solution had no effect in vitro. In this study we compared the effects of Ringer-Lactate solution and isotonic saline solution on mucociliary transport time before, and after, nasal septal surgery in patients with nasal septal deviation. We found that patients who used Ringer-Lactate solu

Sterile water versus isotonic saline solution as irrigation fluid in percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the safety of sterile water as an irrigation solution for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients with kidney calculi were enrolled in this study and randomly divided into two groups for PCNL. Approaches to the calculi were through a single subcostal access with an Amplatz sheath, and either sterile water or isotonic saline solution was used as the irrigation fluid. Serum hemoglobin, haptoglobin, sodium, potassium, and creatinine were measured before and 12 hours after the procedure. The patients were evaluated for signs of tr

Surfactant-rescued gelation: Stabilizing P123-chitosan hydrogels in blood-isotonic aqueous solutions for controlled drug delivery.

The loss of gelation in Chitosan-Pluronic composite hydrogels under physiological saline conditions restricts their potential for drug delivery applications. To this effect, we present a dynamic and composite hydrogel system based on Pluronic P123 and chitosan, which restores gelation upon the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), even in the presence of NaCl at blood-isotonic concentrations. The entry of SDS induces electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic associations, enabling robust gel formation under physiological conditions. The gelation behavior can be desirably modified by varyi

Acute cerebral effects of isotonic crystalloid and colloid solutions following cryogenic brain injury in the rabbit.

Despite the numerous studies examining the relative merits of crystalloids versus colloids for expansion of intravascular volume, little attention has been directed to the cerebral effects of these solutions. In particular, the effect of changes in plasma oncotic pressure on brain water content are poorly understood. The authors recently examined the acute effects of changes in plasma osmolality and colloid oncotic pressure in normal animals, and found that a 65% reduction in oncotic pressure had no detectable effect on brain water content or intracranial pressure. In an effort to extend these

Use of low-glucose isotonic solutions intraoperatively in infants: reassuring data regarding the risk of intraoperative hypoglycaemia.

In years past, it was standard of practice to use high-glucose, low-sodium i.v. infusions as maintenance fluids intraoperatively. However, this tradition was associated with the risk of developing severe postoperative hyponatraemia, which sometimes resulted in cerebral oedema and even death. Research, information, consensus guidelines, and lobbying the pharma industry to produce a low-glucose isotonic solution that would be optimised for use in children has now resulted in a much needed change of practice. However, an outstanding issue has been whether 1% glucose in i.v. solutions is enough or
