Hard ticks (Ixodida: Ixodidae) on humans in Nicaragua.

Ticks pose an increasing threat to public health due to their geographic expansion and the emergence of tick-borne pathogens. In Nicaragua, information on ticks that infest humans is limited. This study reports human tick bites recorded between March 2023 and September 2025 in rural and peri‑urban areas of the departments of Chontales and Río San Juan. Twenty-five cases were analyzed, with 172 ticks collected (28 females, 6 males, 13 nymphs, and 125 larvae). Morphological identification revealed five species: Amblyomma mixtum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma cf. parvum, Rhipicephalus linnaei, and R

A case of gynandromorphism in Hyalomma anatolicum (Ixodida: Ixodidae).

We present a field-collected Hyalomma anatolicum gynandromorph in Xinjiang, China. Compared to the normal H. anatolicum, the gynandromorphic tick was a typical bipartite protogynander: half of the tick body displayed normal female traits, whereas the other side showed normal male traits. The engorged gynandromorphic tick laid hundreds of eggs, and the eggs looked normal.

Ixodes chilensis (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Argentina.

The aim of this note is to report the first record of Ixodes chilensis Kohl, 1956 in Argentina. In June 2023, ticks were collected on bat belonging to the genus Histiotus from Dina Huapí, Rio Negro Province, Patagonian region, Argentina. Based on morphological characteristics and analysis of an obtained partial 16S rDNA gene sequence, these ticks (five nymphs) were determined as I. chilensis. This result represents the first record of this tick species outside Chile and expands the knowledge of its geographical distribution in the southern cone of South America.

Detection in Malaysia of a Borrelia sp. From Haemaphysalis hystricis (Ixodida: Ixodidae).

Spirochetes from the Borrelia genus are known to cause diseases in humans, namely Lyme disease and relapsing fever. These organisms are commonly transmitted to humans by arthropod vectors including ticks, mite, and lice. Here, we report the molecular detection of a Borrelia sp. from a Haemaphysalis hystricis Supino tick collected from wildlife in an Orang Asli settlement in Selangor, Malaysia. Phylogenetic analyses of partial 16s rRNA and flaB gene sequences revealed that the Borrelia sp. is closely related to the relapsing fever group borreliae, Borrelia lonestari, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Bor

Amblyomma auricularium (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Florida: New Hosts and Distribution Records.

Previous published evidence for the occurrence of an exotic armadillo tick, Amblyomma auricularium (Conil), in Florida is scant, but we found it is fully established and integrated into the state's tick fauna. We collected 11,192 specimens of this tick from naturalized nine-banded armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus L., and 14 other species of wild native mammals and birds in Florida, while sampling statewide during 2004 through 2007. In all, we document its specific presence only in 14 contiguous South Florida counties. Moreover, we report the first collections of A. auricularium from the Virgin

DNA barcoding reveals novel biodiversity in ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) of Ethiopia.

Identification of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) is problematic due to inconsistent diagnostic characters, sexual dimorphism, individual variation, and vast morphological differences among life stages, as well as distortion through blood feeding. DNA barcoding has proven useful in delineating tick species, but available genetic databases are littered with misleading mis-identifications, hindering tick-borne disease mitigation strategies. Efforts are needed to generate high quality reference sequences from expertly identified and morphologically vouchered samples. To date, 56 species of

Ixodidae - A rare cause of blepharitis.

Hard ticks are mainly responsible for more "tick-borne" diseases in humans when compared to soft ticks. Tick infestation of ocular and periocular tissues is rare. We report the case of a 61-year-old male with left upper eyelid edema with erythema and live parasite on the lid margin.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Ixodida, Ixodidae) as intermediate host of a canine neglected filarial species with dermal microfilariae.

The life cycles of filarioids of dogs presenting dermal microfilariae have been little studied. Following the recent retrieval of dermal microfilariae identified as Cercopithifilaria sp. in a dog from Sicily (Italy), this study was designed to assess the role of the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus as an intermediate host of this filarial species. An experimental tick infestation was performed on an infected dog using 300 nymphs of R. sanguineus. Engorged nymphs were collected and examined by both microscopic dissection and molecular analysis at five time points (i.e., the same day of t

Lethal Effects of a Commercial Diatomaceous Earth Dust Product on Amblyomma americanum (Ixodida: Ixodidae) Larvae and Nymphs.

With increasing development of resistance to conventional synthetic acaricides in economically and medically important ixodid species, interest in finding alternative control tactics has intensified. Laboratory bioassays were conducted, using the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.), as a model species, to assess the efficacy of a diatomaceous earth-based product, Deadzone, in comparison with a silica gel-based product, CimeXa. CimeXa is already known to be highly lethal against A. americanum larvae and nymphs. The two dust treatments were 100% effective against larvae and nymphs within 2

Comparative morphology of the reproductive system and germ cells of Amblyomma ticks (Acari: Ixodidae): A contribution to Ixodidae systematics.

Among arthropods, ticks of the genus Amblyomma are of great medical and veterinary importance and present phylogenetic and taxonomic divergences given polymorphisms and phenotypic plasticity between subpopulations. Generally, the male reproductive system and spermatozoon exhibit diversified morphology and ultrastructure species-specific, bringing new possibilities for phylogenetic and taxonomic issues. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe and compare the morphology of the male reproductive system and its germ cells of Amblyomma aureolatum, A. sculptum, and A. triste, intending to ide

Effects of Silica-Based CimeXa and Drione Dusts Against Lone Star Tick (Ixodida: Ixodidae) on Cattle.

Ixodid ticks vector pathogens of humans, livestock, and wildlife, and occur in tropical and temperate regions worldwide. We used the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), as a model for other ixodid species, including the southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Ixodida: Ixodidae). We assessed the lethality of CimeXa, an inert silica-based desiccant dust, and Drione, a silica-based desiccant dust with pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), against A. americanum larvae and nymphs on calves. CimeXa was highly lethal to larvae release

Ticks (Ixodidae) on humans in South America.

Twenty eight species of Ixodidae have been found on man in South America (21 Amblyomma, 1 Boophilus, 2 Dermacentor, 2 Haemaphysalis, 1 Ixodes and 1 Rhipicephalus species). Most of them are rarely found on man. However, three species frequently parasitize humans in restricted areas of Argentina (A. neumanni reported from 46 localities), Uruguay (A. triste from 21 sites) and Argentina-Brazil (A. parvum from 27 localities). The most widespread ticks are A. cajennense (134 localities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela), A. oval

Range expansion of Amblyomma americanum and Ixodes scapularis ([Ixodida]: [Ixodidae]) in South Dakota, and new record for Amblyomma maculatum.

This project documents the expanded zoogeographic ranges of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say) and lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum Linnaeus) within eastern South Dakota. The research involves 2 steps. First, tick surveillance was conducted in the eastern counties of South Dakota, spanning March 2021 through August 2022. Surveillance took place along the edge habitat at any accessible natural areas that could be identified as suitable tick habitat. All life stages and species of ticks were collected using a white cloth tick drag, preserved in ethanol, and frozen. Second, the coll

Ecological overview of hard ticks (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Nagasaki prefecture of western Japan during winter 2021-2022.

In Japan, Japanese spotted fever, Lyme disease and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome caused by Ixodidae species are endemic. To prevent and control the diseases, fundamental understandings in tick ecology are crucial. Hence, this study aimed to analyse tick species richness and abundance across Nagasaki prefecture including its remote islands from a wide range of environments. A total of 74 sampling points screening during winter 2021-2022, using dragging method resulted in 14,883 tick samples (279 adults, 7148 nymphs and 7456 larvae) in 11 species belonging to four genera. Desiccant Dusts, With and Without Bioactive Botanicals, Lethal to Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus Canestrini (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in the Laboratory and on Cattle.

The exotic southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), since its eradication from the United States in 1943, made a strong incursion into Texas, beginning 2016. The pest is arguably the most economically detrimental ectoparasite of cattle, Bos taurus L., worldwide. Current R. (B.) microplus control mostly relies on conventional synthetic acaricides to which the ixodid has been developing resistance. Our study demonstrates that commercially available desiccant dust products, with and without bioactive botanical additives, are strongly lethal

Loss of in vitro Efficacy of Topical Commercial Acaricides on Rhipicephalus microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) From Antioquian Farms, Colombia.

In Antioquia, the problems to control Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) tick infestations have spread and ranchers claim conventional treatments are no longer effective. In this study, the in vitro efficacy of commercial topical products was tested with ticks obtained from two dairy farms in Antioquia with severe repeated infestations. About 800 engorged ticks were collected directly from animals in two separate visits at the beginning and end of the same month. The adult immersion test was used, which exposed groups of 40 ticks from each collection at the recommended concentration fo

Lack of parthenogenesis by Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae).

Some reproductive parameters of adult stages of Amblyomma cajennense ticks were studied. The capacity of virgin females to reproduce by parthenogenesis was evaluated, during an experimental infestation, in absence of males, on a horse (Equus cabalus). Ticks were spread either completely free or in limited sites on the body of the animal. The engorged virgin females showed longer feeding periods and lighter body weights than those that had been fertilized. Some of these unmated females produced smaller egg masses, which had no embryonary development. On the other hand, females that had been ins
