Toxicity studies of detoxified Jatropha meal (Jatropha curcas) in rats.

Jatropha curcas, a tropical plant introduced in many Asian and African countries is presently used as a source of biodiesel. The cake after oil extraction is rich in protein and is a potential source of livestock feed. In view of the high toxic nature of whole as well as dehulled seed meal due to the presence of toxic phorbol esters and lectin, the meal was subjected to alkali and heat treatments to deactivate the phorbol ester as well as lectin content. After treatment, the phorbol ester content was reduced up to 89% in whole and dehulled seed meal. Toxicity studies were conducted on male gro

Jatropha toxicity--a review.

Jatropha is a nonedible oil seed plant belonging to Euphorbiaceae family. Global awareness of sustainable and alternative energy resources has propelled research on Jatropha oil as a feedstock for biodiesel production. During the past two decades, several cultivation projects were undertaken to produce Jatropha oil. In future, the increased cultivation of toxic Jatropha plants and utilization of its agro-industrial by-products may raise the frequency of contact with humans, animals, and other organisms. An attempt was thus made to present known information on toxicity of Jatropha plants. The t

Induction of Somatic Embryogenesis in Jatropha curcas.

Jatropha curcas has been a promising crop for biofuel production for the last decade. However, the lack of resistant materials to diseases and improved quality of the oil produced by the seeds has restricted the use of this promising crop. The genetic modifications in the fatty acid pathway, as well as the introduction of resistance to different diseases, would change the fate of Jatropha. To achieve these goals, we need to have a very efficient regeneration system. Here, we report a very useful protocol to induce somatic embryogenesis from leaves of Jatropha using cytokinin as the only growth

Overexpression of Jatropha Gibberellin 2-oxidase 6 (JcGA2ox6) Induces Dwarfism and Smaller Leaves, Flowers and Fruits in Arabidopsis and Jatropha.

Gibberellins (GAs) are plant hormones that play fundamental roles in plant growth and development. Gibberellin 2-oxidase (GA2ox) plays a direct role in determining the levels of bioactive GAs by catalyzing bioactive GAs or their immediate precursors to inactive forms. In this study, a GA2ox gene, designated JcGA2ox6, was isolated from Jatropha curcas. JcGA2ox6 is expressed in all tissues of adult Jatropha, with the highest expression level in male flowers and the lowest expression level in young leaves. Overexpression of JcGA2ox6 in Arabidopsis resulted in a typical dwarf phenotype, along with

Stereochemistry of a Second Riolozane and Other Diterpenoids from Jatropha dioica.

The dichloromethane extract of the roots of Jatropha dioica afforded riolozatrione (1) and a C-6 epimer of riolozatrione, 6-epi-riolozatrione (2), as a new structure and only the second reported riolozane diterpenoid. The two known diterpenoids jatrophatrione (3) and citlalitrione (4) were also isolated and characterized. Both epimers 1 and 2 are genuine plant constituents, with 2 likely being the biosynthesis precursor of 1 due to the tendency for the quantitative transformation of 2 into 1 under base catalysis. The structural characterization and distinction of the stereoisomers utilized 1H
