Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a serious worldwide health threat, killing almost 2 million people per year. Alternative antimycobacterial drugs are urgently needed; studies have shown that medicinal plants traditionally used to treat respiratory diseases are a potential source of compounds to treat tuberculosis. This paper studied the antimycobacterial activity of 28 extracts from four different plant species that have been used in traditional Mexican medicine to treat tuberculosis. Bark and leaf crude extracts of Juglans regia L., Juglans mollis Engelm., Carya illinoensis (Wangenh) K. Koch and

Juglans nigra and Juglans regia are two highly economically important species for wood and fruit production that are susceptible to anthracnose caused by Gnomonia leptostyla. The identification of genotypes resistant to anthracnose could represent a valid alternative to agronomic and chemical management. In this study, we analyzed 72 walnut genotypes that showed a variety of resistance phenotypes in response to natural infection. According to the disease severity rating and microsatellite fingerprinting analysis, these genotypes were divided into three main groups: (40) J. nigra resistant, (1)

Plants are considered as an essential source to treat different diseases. In traditional system of medicine, Juglans regia (J. regia) has been used in curing sinusitis and cough. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-asthmatic activity of J. regia in ovalbumin-induced allergic asthmatic BALB/c mice. The mice were sensitized intraperitoneally and subsequently challenged with ovalbumin (intranasal) to induce allergic asthma. Mice were treated with methanolic, n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of J. regia and methylprednisolone for 7 consecutive days, along with intranasal chall

Numerous research works have tried to evaluate the correlation between inflammation and the onset of prostate cancer. Given the in vitro antioxidant power and the anti-proliferative effects on human prostate cancer cells shown by a Juglans regia L. fresh fruit extract, the aim of this work was the evaluation of its potential in the acute and chronic inflammatory states in vivo, revealing a strong anti-inflammatory activity. In the zymosan-induced edema formation assay, a light and non-significant edema reduction was shown. On the contrary, in the zymosan-induced thermal hyperalgesia assay, the

The difficulty to treat resistant strains-related hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) promoted the study of phytoextracts, known sources of bioactive molecules. Accordingly, in the present study, the pharmacological activities of Juglans regia (L.) pellicle extract (WPE) were investigated. The antiviral effect was tested against Herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, Poliovirus 1, Adenovirus 2, Echovirus 9, Coxsackievirus B1 through the plaque reduction assay. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were evaluated against medically important strains, by the microdilution method. DPPH and super

Global and regional trends of population aging spotlight major public health concerns. As one of the most common adverse prognostic factors, advanced age is associated with a remarkable incidence risk of many non-communicable diseases, affecting major organ systems of the human body. Age-dependent factors and molecular processes can change the nervous system's normal function and lead to neurodegenerative disorders. Oxidative stress results from of a shift toward reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the equilibrium between ROS generation and the antioxidant defense system. Oxidative str

Juglans pyriformis Liebm. (Juglandaceae) is a species endemic to Mexico, which inhabits the mesophyll mountain forest and is highly valued for the quality of its wood. Therefore, it has been overexploited and its population has declined; it is currently listed as endangered. Therefore, it is important to implement conservation measures. One conservation strategy could be to collect seeds in tree for the establishment of forest plantations. Another strategy is to conserve them in vitro germplasm banks through the propagation and establishment of vegetative explants. Under natural and nursery co

Naphthoquinones (NQs) occur naturally in a large variety of plants. Several NQs are highly active against protozoans, amongst them the causative pathogens of neglected tropical diseases such as human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), Chagas disease and leishmaniasis. Prominent NQ-producing plants can be found among Juglans spp. (Juglandaceae) with juglone derivatives as known constituents. In this study, 36 highly variable extracts were prepared from different plant parts of J. regia, J. cinerea and J. nigra. For all extracts, antiprotozoal activity was determined against the protoz

Walnuts (Juglans regia L.) are attracting increasing interest from consumers, industries, and the healthcare community due to their high content of bioactive compounds, including (poly)phenols, carotenoids, tocopherols, and omega-3 fatty acids. Despite the continued growth in global walnut production, the effective valorisation of walnut processing by-products remains a challenge. While most research has focused on the edible kernel, emerging evidence suggests that underutilised walnut fractions may also represent valuable sources of compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

English walnut (Juglans regia) is a species that is highly valued for the quality of its wood and the nutritional and nutraceutical properties of its fruit. A severe dieback of J. regia trees was observed recently in orchards located in three geographically distinct areas of Tuscany, central Italy. Symptoms included root and collar rot, necrosis of the under-bark tissue, bleeding cankers, stunted growth, and crown dieback. Four Phytophthora species were obtained from 239 isolates found on symptomatic J. regia individuals. They were identified, on the basis of macro-morphological (colony shape

J. nigra leaf contains mixture of various pharmacologically active compounds and it is assumed that they may have the potential radioprotective effect. The purpose of this work was to predict radioprotective doses by correlating changes in organ distribution of radiopharmaceuticals with extract dose levels and rat body weight using response surface methodology (RSM) based on a second-order polynomial equation. The extract was administered daily by oral gavage to rats at dose of 6.9, 10.3, or 13.7 mg kg-1 body weight (bw) day-1 for 10 days. On the eleventh day, 0.1 ml of the one radiopharmaceut
