The fact that neoplasms of the cranial base or metastases of nasopharyngeal tumors may cause palsy of nerves which pass through the jugular and anterior condylar foramina has been well documented. On the other hand, very little has been reported about the traumatic causes of these diseases, probably because they are often underestimated or misdiagnosed. In this paper, the Authors report four cases of palsy of the last four cranial nerves caused by various kinds of trauma: glossopharyngeal thermo-rhizotomy, bullet wound, closed cranial trauma, neck surgery. The main symptom immediately followin

OBJECTIVE The etiology of jugular bulb stenosis (JBS) or occlusion in the context of vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAMs) is unknown. It can lead to decompensation of a lesion that was previously clinically stable. The aim of this study was to describe the natural history of JBS or occlusion in VGAM and to determine whether there is an association with bony remodeling of the jugular foramina. METHODS The authors identified all cases of JBS greater than 70% bilaterally involving patients seen at The Hospital for Sick Children between January 2007 and June 2014. The foramen diameters w

BACKGROUND: Understanding the pathogenesis of the chiari-like malformation in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) is incomplete, and current hypotheses do not fully explain the development of syringomyelia (SM) in the spinal cords of affected dogs. This study investigates an unconventional pathogenetic theory for the development of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure waves in the subarachnoid space in CKCS with SM, by analogy with human diseases. In children with achondroplasia the shortening of the skull base can lead to a narrowing of the jugular foramina (JF) between the cranial base sy

INTRODUCTION: The jugular foramen (JF) is a critical anatomical structure that houses the lower cranial nerves (IX, X, and XI), making it a key focus in neurosurgical procedures. Variations, such as ossified dural septations within the JF, can significantly impact surgical outcomes. The present study investigates the incidence and impact of these ossifications on JF morphometry, providing insights crucial for surgical planning and execution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed bilaterally 120 adult dried skulls to assess the presence of accessory foramina (AF), proposing that these represent o

PURPOSE: Achondroplasia is a skeletal dysplasia with diminished growth of the skull base secondary to defective enchondral bone formation. This leads to narrowing of the foramen magnum and jugular foramina, which further leads to ventricular dilatation and prominence of the emissary veins. The primary goal of our study was to determine a correlation between the degree of ventricular dilatation, jugular foramina and foramen magnum narrowing, as well as emissary vein enlargement.
METHODS: Conventional T2-weighted MR images were evaluated for surface area of the foramen magnum and jugular forami

PURPOSE: The jugular foramen (JF), located at the junction of the occipital and temporal bones, exhibits significant morphological variability due to its developmental origin. It transmits key neurovascular structures, including the glossopharyngeal (IX), vagus (X), and accessory (XI) cranial nerves, as well as the internal jugular vein. Detailed anatomical knowledge of the JF is essential for planning and safely performing surgical procedures in this region. The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive quantitative synthesis of the anatomical characteristics of the JF based on g

BACKGROUND: The jugular foramen, at the junction of the temporal and occipital bones, contains critical neurovascular structures. Variations such as high-riding bulbs, bony domes, and septations can influence clinical syndromes and complicate surgery. While some reviews address individual features, no meta-analysis has comprehensively evaluated jugular foramen morphology and its clinical and surgical significance.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies reporting jugular foramen morphometry, including dome presence, septations, fossa depth, a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Complex and syndromic craniosynostosis can be complicated by raised intracranial pressure (ICP), which in the absence of other identifiable origins, is probably caused by venous hypertension. Children with these conditions have been shown to have narrowing of the sigmoid sinus-jugular vein complex. Evidence of bony narrowing of the jugular foramina in children with complex or syndromic craniosynostosis and raised ICP compared with that in children with craniosynostosis without raised ICP would provide support for the theory that venous hypertension occurs in the former

The microsurgical anatomy of the jugular foramen was studied in 12 formalin preserved cadavers (24 foramina) and 40 dry-skulls (80 foramina). The jugular foramen was exposed by microsurgical dissection with drilling from a superior to inferior direction. Observations regarding dural architecture of the jugular foramen and relationships between neurovascular structures passing through the foramen were noted in cadavers. Normal bony construction of the foramen and its variational anatomy were examined in dry-skull specimens. Using photographs and drawings, the anatomy of the jugular foramen is p

BACKGROUND: The jugular foramen, the bony opening on the basis of skull, is an opening through which pass the ninth, tenth, and eleventh cranial nerves, two dural sinuses, and the meningeal branches of the occipital and ascending pharyngeal arteries. The increasing use of modern diagnostic procedures and new surgical approaches has created a need for much more detailed anatomical studies and explanations. This article reveals some additional features.
MATERIAL/METHODS: Fifty jugular foramina of skulls of persons of unknown age and gender were examined. The morphological characteristics of all

INDICATIONS CORRIDOR AND LIMITS OF EXPOSURE: This approach is intended for tumors centered in the jugular foramen with extensions between intracranial and extracranial spaces, possible spread to the middle ear, and variable bony destruction. 1,2.
ANATOMIC ESSENTIALS NEED FOR PREOPERATIVE PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT: Jugular foramen paragangliomas are complex lesions that usually invade and fill related venous structures. They present complex relationships with skull base neurovascular structures as internal carotid artery, lower cranial nerves (CNs), middle ear, and mastoid segment of facial nerv

BACKGROUND: Access to the jugular foramen (JF) requires extensive approaches. An endoscopic endonasal far medial (EEFM) approach combined with a postauricular transtemporal (PTT) approach may provide adequate exposure with limited morbidities.
OBJECTIVE: To provide a quantitative anatomic comparison of the EEFM, the PTT, and the combined EEFM/PTT approaches. A clinical case of the combined approach is presented.
METHODS: Five cadaveric heads were dissected. Each specimen received PTT and EEFM approaches on opposite sides followed by an EEFM approach on the side of the PTT approach. Morphomet

Cranial foramina are holes within the skull, formed during development, allowing entry and exit of blood vessels and nerves. Once formed they must remain open, due to the vital structures they contain, i.e. optic nerves, jugular vein, carotid artery, and other cranial nerves and blood vessels. Understanding cranial foramina development is essential as cranial malformations lead to the stenosis or complete closure of these structures, resulting in blindness, deafness, facial paralysis, raised intracranial pressure and lethality. Here we focus on describing early events in the formation of the j

Paragangliomas are the most common tumors at jugular foramen and pose a great surgical challenge. Careful clinical history and physical examination must be performed to adequately evaluate neurological deficits and its chronologic evolution, also to delineate an overview of the patient performance status. Complete imaging evaluation including MRI and CT scans should be performed, and angiography is a must to depict tumor blood supply and sigmoid sinus/internal jugular vein patency. Screening for multifocal paragangliomas is advisable, with a whole-body imaging. Laboratory investigation of endo

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of dumbbell jugular foramen schwannomas can be challenging. The main goals of surgery are maximal resection with preservation of function and overall patient quality of life.
METHODS: In this paper, we present a step-by-step technical description of a microsurgical resection of dumbbell-shaped JF schwannoma using a modified retrosigmoid infra-jugular approach.
CONCLUSION: The modified retrosigmoid infra-jugular is a safe and suitable approach in selected cases. This technique, however, must be limited only to those tumors with minimal extension into the jugular

BACKGROUND: Large, destructive intracranial and extracranial lesions at the jugular foramen (JF) and anterior craniovertebral junction (CVJ) are among the most challenging lesions to resect.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the extreme lateral transodontoid approach (ELTOA) with the extreme medial endoscopic endonasal approach (EMEEA) to determine the most effective surgical approach to the JF and CVJ.
METHODS: Seven formalin-fixed cadaveric heads were dissected. Using neuronavigation, we quantitatively measured and compared the exposure of the intracranial and extracranial neurovascular structures, th

The jugular-nodose ganglia contain the sensory peripheral neurons of the vagus nerve, linking visceral organs to the medulla oblongata. Accessing these ganglia in smaller animals without damaging the vascular and neural structures may be challenging, as ganglionic fibers imbed deeply into the carotid sheath, and vagal parasympathetic fibers cross through the interior of the ganglia. We describe a practical protocol for locating and accessing the mouse jugular-nodose ganglia in vivo, including instructions for intraganglionic injections and postperfusion dissection. BACKGROUND: Hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) and solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare tumors of mesenchymal origin. Here, the authors present a rare case of anaplastic HPC in the jugular foramen (JF). The authors also conduct a systematic review of the literature to examine the current fund of knowledge on JF HPC/SFTs.
METHODS: A systematic MEDLINE search was conducted using key words "hemangiopericytoma" OR "solitary fibrous tumor" AND "jugular foramen" OR "extracranial" OR "skull base." Clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes of the present case were reviewed and compared with those in
