Actinic keratosis is a precancerous lesion that is commonly seen in the elderly patient and requires treatment. It shows a predilection for areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, and usually manifests as multiple skin-colored or discrete reddish scaly verrucous plaques. The diagnosis is usually based on the clinical appearance of the lesion. Therapeutic options include physical, immunological and chemical measures. The choice of treatment is determined by numerous factors, and can be adapted to the individual situation presenting.

Actinic keratoses (AK) are common precancerous cutaneous lesions in fair-skinned individuals as a result of cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Due to their high prevalence, AK account for a large disease burden, in particular in older persons. As AK may potentially progress into invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, guidelines recommend early and consequent treatment. Numerous lesion- and field-directed interventions with different efficacy and safety profiles are currently licensed in Germany. The appropriate intervention should be chosen together with the patient based on hi

Actinic keratosis is a cutaneous lesion characterized by proliferation of atypical epidermal keratinocytes due to prolonged exposure to exogenous factors such as ultraviolet radiation. AKs are in-situ-squamous cell carcinomas (PEC) of the skin. AK typically presents as erythematous, scaly patch or papule (classic AK), occasionally as thick, adherent scale on an erythematous base. Mostly fair-skinned adults are affected. AKs typically occur in areas of frequent sun exposure (balding scalp, face, "H-region", lateral neck, décolleté, dorsum of the hand and lower extremities). Actinic Cheilitis is

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common precancerous skin condition predominantly affecting older males with fair skin and significant UV exposure. The clinical significance of AK is related to its potential for malignant transformation and progression to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Accurate diagnosis of AK is essential for adequate treatment, evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, and mitigating the risk of developing SCC. However, clinician variability due to the subjective nature of current diagnostic tools presents significant challenges to achieving consistent and reliable AK diagnoses. Thus,

BACKGROUND: Solar/actinic keratoses (AKS) are premalignant lesions, usually less than 1 cm in diameter, that appear on chronically sun-damaged skin.
METHODS: We describe four patients with a form of AK that enlarged and recurred despite standard treatment. Histologic examination revealed a single and multilayered sheet of anaplastic cells along the undersurface of the epidermis extending down hair follicles and present over a large area.
RESULTS: Three of the patients developed either a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or basal cell carcinoma (BCC) within the area encompassed by the AK.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of UV-induced actinic keratosis and further skin lesions. A newly developed questionnaire about lifetime UV radiation exposure was completed by 514 seafarers. An experienced dermatologist inspected the whole-body skin status of all participants. The questionnaire revealed a pre-employment UV radiation exposure in 104 seafarers, sunbed use in 26 subjects and a median work-related UV radiation exposure at sea of 20 years. The diagnosis of actinic keratoses was made in 94 seafarers and the clinical diagnosis of skin cancers in 48 seafarers (28 ba

Actinic keratoses are common, often multiple, epidermal lesions found mainly on the sun-exposed skin of fair-skinned middle-aged and older people.(1) Over time, lesions may remain unchanged or may proliferate, regress, reappear or develop into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).(2) Detectable (spot) lesions are often associated with alteration of the surrounding skin (field) where subclinical lesions might be present.(2) Interventions may target individual or multiple lesions or a whole field.(2) Here, we update our previous review(3) on the prevention and treatment of actinic keratoses, focusing o
