[Paradoxical kinesis phenomenon in focal hand dystonia--writer's cramp].

Paradoxical kinesis (PK) phenomenon and its variants, exerting a beneficial influence on dystonia dynamics, are described using self clinical examination of 57 writer's cramp patients. PK was found in all the patients independently of writer's cramp variant, duration and severity. The most frequent writing maneuvers were as follows: hand printed (100%), proximal arm muscles writing (82.5%), individually selected writing instrument (67.5-80%), unusual means (67.5-75%), writing imitation with unlike-pen object (70%), marked papers (52.5%). The beneficial influence of PK phenomenon on dystonia ex

Cranial kinesis in the miniaturised lizard Ablepharus kitaibelii (Squamata: Scincidae).

Cranial kinesis refers to intracranial movements in the vertebrate skull that do not concern the jaw joint, the middle ear or the hypobranchial skeleton. Different kinds of cranial kinesis have been reported for lizards, including mesokinesis, metakinesis, amphikinesis (simultaneous mesokinesis and metakinesis) and streptostyly. Streptostyly is considered relatively widespread within lizards, whereas mesokinesis has been documented only for geckos, varanids and anguids. The present study investigated cranial kinesis in the miniaturised scincid Ablepharus kitaibelii by integrating morphological

Upper beak depression instead of elevation dominates cranial kinesis in woodpeckers.

The value of birds' ability to move the upper beak relative to the braincase has been shown in vital tasks like feeding and singing. In woodpeckers, such cranial kinesis has been thought to hinder pecking as delivering forceful blows calls for a head functioning as a rigid unit. Here, we tested whether cranial kinesis is constrained in woodpeckers by comparing upper beak rotation during their daily activities such as food handling, calling and gaping with those from closely related species that also have a largely insectivorous diet but do not peck at wood. Both woodpeckers and non-woodpecker

Diastolic filling abnormalities by color kinesis in newborns exposed to intrauterine cocaine.

Because cocaine crosses the placenta, we prospectively evaluated global and segmental systolic and diastolic cardiac function by color kinesis in clinically asymptomatic newborns who were exposed to cocaine in utero (group 1, n = 82). Their data were compared with normal controls (group 3, n = 87) and newborns exposed to drugs other than cocaine (group 2, n = 108). During left ventricular filling, newborns exposed to cocaine, compared with groups 2 and 3, had significantly (P <.05) higher global fractional area change (%) (76 +/- 10.3 vs 72 +/- 9.4 and 72 +/- 9.1, respectively), regional fract

Differentiation of myocardial infarction and angina pectoris by processing ultrasonic color kinesis images.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a method for early, accurate differentiation between old myocardial infarction (OMI) and angina pectoris (AP) using color kinesis (CK) images. We first extracted exact end-diastolic and end-systolic contours from CK images and then extracted the features of cardiac function from two CK images (one at rest, the other after exercise) and investigated their effectiveness in differentiating old myocardial infarction and angina pectoris. We then evaluated the effectiveness of several features in recognizing coronary artery disease and used the effective

Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high-impact joint.

Prokinesis-in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase-is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil), birds known for violent head-butting behavior. To understand how the helmeted hornbill balances the competing demands of kinesis and collision, we combine manual craniofacial joint manipulation, skull micro-computed tomography (μCT) and articular raycas

Leucocyte kinesis in blood, bronchoalveoli and nasal cavities during late asthmatic responses in guinea-pigs.

Recently, we reported a reproducible model of asthma in guinea-pigs in vivo, which developed a late asthmatic response (LAR) as well as an early response. In this study, time-related changes in the occurrence of the LAR and leucocyte kinesis were assessed. Furthermore, the state of the activation of eosinophils that migrated into the lower airways was characterized in vitro. Guinea-pigs were alternately sensitized/challenged by inhalation with aerosolized ovalbumin adsorbed on aluminium hydroxide and ovalbumin alone, once every 2 weeks. At defined times before and after the fifth challenge, ai

Assessment of left ventricular diastolic function using color kinesis: differentiation between normal and pseudonormalized patterns.

PURPOSE: Doppler examination of transmitral flow has been widely used to noninvasively assess left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. However, it has been demonstrated that transmitral flow velocity is dependent on LV relaxation and left atrial pressure. Increases in left atrial pressure compensate for the effects of impaired LV relaxation, frequently resulting in a "pseudonormalization" of the transmitral flow pattern. The purpose of this study was to assess whether analysis of diastolic color kinesis (CK) can be applied to differentiation between normal and pseudonormalized (PN) patterns o

[The correlation between left ventricular segmental kinesis and a Selvester QRS analysis in stabilized myocardial infarct].

We have studied the relationship between left ventricular segmental wall motion evaluated by means of biplane left ventricular cineangiography and the myocardial infarct size estimated using Selvester's scoring system based on the QRS of the electrocardiogram. Seventy consecutive patients with old myocardial infarction were recruited. All patients underwent diagnostic retrograde left heart catheterization including left ventriculography and selective coronary arteriography. Nineteen patients were excluded from the study due to intraventricular conduction disturbances and left ventricular hyper

The energy cost of level walking before and after hydro-kinesi therapy in patients with spastic paresis.

In this study the energy cost of level walking was measured in 23 patients with stationary spastic paresis before and after a two-week treatment (45 min daily) of hydro-kinesi therapy, the latter consisting of passive and active movements in warm (32 degrees C) sea water, free swimming and water immersion walking. Among the subjects (80.2 +/- 13.2 kg body mass; 56.0 +/- 14.6 years of age; 10.7 +/- 6.6 years of duration of spasticity), 12 were affected by hemiparesis, 4 by multiple sclerosis and 7 by spinal cord injury. The energy cost of level walking (Cw) was measured before and after therapy

Detection of left ventricular systolic and diastolic abnormalities in patients with coronary artery disease by color kinesis.

BACKGROUND: Color kinesis (CK) is a recently developed echocardiographic technique based on acoustic quantification that automatically tracks and displays endocardial motion in real time and has been used in initial studies to improve the evaluation of global and regional wall motion. HYPOTHESIS: For further validation of the use of CK for analysis of segmental ventricular dysfunction, we assessed its sensitivity and specificity for detection of regional systolic and diastolic wall motion abnormalities in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Two-dimensional (2-D) echocardiog

Joint histology in Alligator mississippiensis challenges the identification of synovial joints in fossil archosaurs and inferences of cranial kinesis.

Archosaurs, like all vertebrates, have different types of joints that allow or restrict cranial kinesis, such as synovial joints and fibrous joints. In general, synovial joints are more kinetic than fibrous joints, because the former possess a fluid-filled cavity and articular cartilage that facilitate movement. Even though there is a considerable lack of data on the microstructure and the structure-function relationships in the joints of extant archosaurs, many functional inferences of cranial kinesis in fossil archosaurs have hinged on the assumption that elongated condylar joints are (i) sy

Diagnosis of multivessel coronary vasospasm by detecting postischemic regional left ventricular delayed relaxation on echocardiography using color kinesis.

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether multivessel coronary spasm occurs spontaneously in patients who have variant angina (VA) with demonstrated multivessel spasm induced by intracoronary injection of acetylcholine (ACh). Regional left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction or wall motion abnormality may persist after an episode of coronary vasospasm. Color kinesis (CK) is a recent development that facilitates the echocardiographic evaluation of regional diastolic wall motion. METHODS AND RESULTS: Regional diastolic wall motion was evaluated using CK in 26 patients with VA within 1 week of the

Suction feeding biomechanics of Polypterus bichir: investigating linkage mechanisms and the contributions of cranial kinesis to oral cavity volume change.

Many fishes use substantial cranial kinesis to rapidly increase buccal cavity volume, pulling prey into the mouth via suction feeding. Living polypterids are a key lineage for understanding the evolution and biomechanics of suction feeding because of their phylogenetic position and unique morphology. Polypterus bichir have fewer mobile cranial elements compared with teleosts [e.g. immobile (pre)maxillae] but successfully generate suction through dorsal, ventral and lateral oral cavity expansion. However, the relative contributions of these motions to suction feeding success have not been quant

Usefulness of color kinesis imaging for evaluation of regional right ventricular wall motion in patients with surgically repaired tetralogy of Fallot.

We evaluated regional right ventricular wall motion during systole in patients with surgically repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) using color kinesis imaging. Color kinesis images were obtained in a subcostal sagittal view from 19 patients with repaired TOF (TOF group), aged 3 to 5 years, and 20 age-matched normal subjects (control group). For regional wall motion analysis, the endocardial motion distance and the fractional area change (FAC) were calculated for 6 segments obtained from color kinesis images. The endocardial inward excursion distances and the FACs in the upper, middle, and lower

[Clinical usefulness of quantitative two-dimensional echocardiographic analysis of segmental kinesis of the left ventricle in monitoring of patients with neoplasms treated with anthracyclines].

To determine whether serial quantitative two-dimensional echocardiographic analysis of left ventricular wall motion could be effective in selecting patients in whom anthracycline treatment must be stopped, 26 patients (18 M and 8 F, mean age 10 +/- 3, range 6 to 16 years) with malignancy, receiving doxorubicin or daunomycin were followed up. Left ventricular regional wall motion abnormalities were detected in 11 patients (42%), while left ventricular ejection fraction at rest (although progressively decreased from baseline value [63 +/- 2 vs 55 +/- 2%; p = 0.0001]) was still in normal range. Simplified echocardiographic assessment of regional left ventricular wall motion pattern in patients with takotsubo and acute coronary syndrome: The randomized blinded Two-chamber Apical Kinesis Observation (TAKO) study.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) from acute coronary syndrome involving the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD-ACS) is difficult due to left ventricular apical wall motion abnormality pattern in both and typically requires an invasive coronary angiography (ICA) study for diagnostic confirmation. OBJECTIVES: To identify differences in the regional wall motion abnormality (RWMA) pattern using a comprehensive comparative analysis of the transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) findings in patients with TTC versus LAD-ACS. METHODS: This was a retrospective, rand

Wearable-Sensor-Instrumented Assessment of Prolonged Walking Identifies Performance Deficits in Older Adults With Normal Clinical Presentation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Wearable sensors provide robust, objective information about movement quality. The Kinesis Gait uses shin-mounted accelerometers to augment clinical assessment by capturing gait spatiotemporal characteristics and quantifying fall risk. When used during a Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), the Kinesis Gait may capture gait quality deterioration over longer distances akin to those navigated during community ambulation. This analysis investigated the value of an instrumented 6MWT compared to clinical measures of function and muscle quality to identify older adults at risk of dif

Potassium-Selective Nanoelectrode Arrays for Single-Cell Profiling of Human iPSC-Derived Cardiomyocytes.

Potassium ion (K+) dynamics are central to cardiac electrophysiology, with early disruptions in K+ flux often preceding arrhythmia and contractile dysfunction. However, current sensing technologies, such as patch-clamp, microelectrode arrays (MEAs), and fluorescent indicators, either lack chemical specificity for K+ or are unsuitable for long-term, single-cell analysis. Conventional ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), while more selective, are limited by bulk-phase design and poor spatial resolution. To address these limitations, we present KINESIS (K+-Ion Nano-Electrode Selective Interface Syste

Analysis of laryngoscopic features in patients with unilateral vocal fold paresis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The diagnosis of paresis in patients with vocal fold motion impairment remains a challenge. More than 27 clinical parameters have been cited that may signify paresis. We hypothesize that some features are more significant than others. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series. METHODS: Two laryngologists rated laryngoscopy findings in 19 patients suspected of paresis. The diagnosis was confirmed with laryngeal electromyography. A standard set of 27 ratings was used for each examination that included movement, laryngeal configuration, and stroboscopy signs.
