A rat tropic rat hepatoma virus pseudotype Kirsten sarcoma virus has been rescued from a co-culture of rat hepatoma tissue culture cells, HTC-HI, with Kirsten murine sarcoma transformed non-producer rat kidney cells (K-NRK). A horse skin cell line (E. Derm, NBL-6, CCL-57) was susceptible to focus formation by the Kirsten mouse sarcoma virus, feline sarcoma virus (ST stain) and the MSV pseudotypes with woolly monkey, gibbon monkey, RD-114, AT-124, baboon placenta and murine xenotropic (BALB/c 3T3 and C57L/JD) type-C viruses. Foci were detected within 5 days after infection and the transformed cells continued to produce infectious virus and group-specific antigen of their respective type-C leukemia viruses. The transformation efficiency of various type-C sarcoma viruses in horse cells was also very high.

Murine erythroblastosis virus (MuEV), also called murine leukemia virus-Kirsten, is a member of the murine type-C-RNA leukemia-sarcoma group of oncogenic viruses. In this study, the effect of tumor presence on the concentration of vitamin E in the liver, spleen, and kidney of BALB/c mice was measured, and the influence of the degree of fat saturation was assessed. In mice fed diets deficient in vitamin E, the presence of a transplanted sarcoma in the thigh significantly increased the concentration of the vitamin in all 3 organs. Interrelationships between neoplastic progression and the expression of intermediate filaments were examined in primary cultures, immortal lines, and Kirsten murine sarcoma virus (KiMSV) transformed lines of rat ovarian surface epithelial (ROSE) cells. Thyroid cells transformed by the Kirsten-ras oncogene become tumorigenic in syngeneic animals. Their growth is no longer dependent on TSH but becomes dependent on serum. Combining morphological and biochemical evidence, we show that serum withdrawal induces apoptotic cell death in Kirsten and Harvey-ras transformed thyroid cell. On the other hand, neither serum nor TSH withdrawal induce apoptosis in differentiated FRTL-5 cells. We used PCR to amplify proteinase activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) from human kidney cDNA. The open reading frame comprised 1191 bp and encoded a protein of 397 residues with 83% identity with mouse PAR-2. In KNRK cells (a line of kirsten murine sarcoma virus-transformed rat kidney epithelial cells) transfected with this cDNA, trypsin and activating peptide (AP) corresponding to the tethered ligand exposed by trypsin cleavage (SLIGKV-NH2) induced a prompt increase in cytosolic calcium ion concentration ([Ca2+]i).
