The Kluver-Bucy syndrome.

Evolution of psychological disorders following head injury including memory disorders and other cognitive ones are common. The best known are psychiatric disturbances of various kind after lesions of frontal lobes. Cognitive, behavioural and emotional disorders are not usually seen in patients with bilateral temporal lesions. In our Department of Neurotraumatology we observed 4 patients with post-traumatic lesions localized bitemporally. They developed Kluver-Bucy syndrome--rarity in human pathology--with combination of three or more the following syndromes: increased oral activity, hypersexua

Kluver-Bucy syndrome in Huntington's chorea.

In this paper the first case of Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) in Huntington's chorea is reported. The patient, a 46-year-old man with advanced Huntington's disease, displayed prosopagnosia, oral tendencies, emotional changes, hypersexual behavior, and hyperphagia associated with severe dementia. Haloperidol in moderate doses controlled both the KBS and the chorea, suggesting a possible role for the dopaminergic system in the pathogenesis of KBS in Huntington's disease. The presence of profound dementia in our patient supports the previous assertion that human cases of KBS are invariably associate

Epileptic Kluver-Bucy syndrome: case report.

The Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) consists of prominent oral tendencies, emotional blunting, altered dietary habits, hypersexuality, and visual and auditory agnosia. It was first produced experimentally in monkeys; subsequently, many human cases have been reported. The syndrome results from bilateral temporal lobe damage, and is mainly observed in conditions which tend to produce such damage, such as herpes encephalitis, Pick disease, and head injury. A case of KBS associated with psychomotor status epilepticus is reported.

Kluver-Bucy syndrome after mycoplasmal bronchitis.

Kluver-Bucy syndrome is a rare neurobehavioral condition characterized by visual agnosia, excessive oral tendencies, hypermetamorphosis, placidity, altered sexual behavior, and changes in dietary habits. This description of a 14-year-old boy presenting with complete Kluver-Bucy syndrome after Mycoplasma pneumoniae bronchitis is the first such case report. MRI revealed left temporal horn dilation and asymmetry of both temporal lobes. We hypothesize that the pathophysiology of our case is immune-mediated damage by M. pneumoniae resulting in vasculopathy.

Partial Kluver-Bucy syndrome: two cases.

Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a rare neuropsychiatric disorder that may be characterized by visual agnosia, placidity, altered sexual activity, hypermetamorphosis, and hyperorality. Patients with KBS present with a complex behavioral syndrome. KBS is usually associated with lesions of the amygdala or amygdaloid pathways. However, partial KBS may occur in the absence of the classic bilateral temporal lesions. Pharmacologic treatment options have been developed from the results of case reports, which suggest that carbamazepine and antipsychotics may be helpful. We present the cases of two patien

Incomplete Kluver-Bucy syndrome and fluent aphasia.

A case of probable herpetic viral encephalitis is presented. The clinical picture following the acute phase of disease was dominated by severe fluent aphasia, prominent oral tendencies, visual agnosia, and a decrease in fear reactions. Most of these symptoms, with the obvious exception of aphasia, are similar to those observed by Kluver and Bucy in rhesus monkeys that underwent bitemporal lobectomy. These manifestations may be explained by the tendency of the herpes simplex virus to invade the temporal lobes. "Agnosia" in the auditory field and changes in vocal behavior were observed by H. Klu

Partial Kluver-Bucy syndrome secondary to tubercular meningitis.

Tubercular meningitis (TBM) is a devastating extra pulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis and demonstrates a high neurological morbidity. A rare complication of this condition is Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS), which is a neurobehavioral disorder characterised by hyper-sexuality, visual agnosia, bulimia, placidity, hyperorality and memory deficits caused by lesions to the amygdala. The amygdala lesions can be due to many causes, including traumatic brain injury, systemic conditions and infections such as tuberculosis. Here, we present a case of partial KBS in a patient undergoing treatment for TB

Kluver-Bucy syndrome -- an experience with six cases.

The Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a neurobehavioral syndrome and can be seen in association with a variety of neurological disorders. Case records of 6 patients with KBS seen during a period of 5 years in a university hospital were reviewed. During the study period 6 patients with KBS, aged between 4 and 14 years, were seen. Hyperorality, hypersexuality, and abnormal behavior were the most common manifestations. Of the 6 patients, 5 had recurrent unprovoked seizures. The associated neurological disorders included anoxia-ischemic encephalopthy (2), herpes simplex encephalitis (1), neurocysticer

Human Kluver-Bucy syndrome following acute subdural haematoma.

We present a rare case of complete human Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) following recovery from transtentorial herniation caused by acute subdural haematoma (ASDH). A 17-year-old right-handed high school boy got into stupor within five minutes after 3-rounds of sparing at boxing. Emergency computed tomographic (CT) scan showed right cerebral hemispheric ASDH, which was evacuated following intentional decompressive craniectomy. After recovery of consciousness, he developed emotional changes (placidity with loss of normal fear and anger), psychic blindness, aberrant sexual behaviour, excessive oral

Transient Kluver-Bucy syndrome following complex partial status epilepticus.

The characteristic features of Kluver-Bucy syndrome include hypersexuality, hyperorality, placidity, hypermetamorphosis, visual agnosia, changes in dietary habits, and memory impairment. Human cases have been reported with herpes simplex encephalitis, head injury, Pick's disease, transtentorial herniation, adrenoleukodystrophy, and Reye's syndrome, all involving bilateral temporal lobe pathology. We present the case of a patient with no evidence of a structural lesion in the temporal lobes and behavioral changes consistent with Kluver-Bucy syndrome following complex partial status epilepticus.

Kluver-Bucy syndrome in one case with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a collection of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including visual agnosia (prosopagnosia), hypermetamorphosis, placidity, hypersexuality, and hyperorality. Although neuropsychiatric manifestation is prevalent in cases with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), only one literature reported a case with SLE that had KBS previously. In this article, a 37-year-old woman with SLE who developed KBS and other neuropsychiatric symptoms is presented. Brain imaging proved the relevant structural lesion. The possible explanation of pathogenesis of KBS in SLE is discussed.

Kluver-Bucy Syndrome: A Rare Complication of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis.

UNLABELLED: Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a characterized by a group of cognitive dysfunctions that include hypersexuality, placidity, hyperorality, memory deficits and hypermetamorphosis. This syndrome is often seen in pathological states that destroy the temporal lobes, normally bilaterally. Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is one of the causes of KBS, as the herpes virus can cause dysfunction/destruction of the temporal lobes. KBS is a very rare syndrome, with just a few cases described in the literature. We present the case of a 21-year-old-man who was diagnosis with KBS after HSE. LEARN

Kluver-Bucy syndrome in Pick disease: clinical and pathologic correlations.

The clinical and neuropathologic findings of five cases of Pick disease were studied. All had severe anterior temporal atrophy and abnormal neurons with highly argyrophilic cytoplasm of Pick bodies. The amygdala was abnormal in every case and had severe involvement of all nuclear subdivisions. Behaviorally, the patients exhibited elements of Kluver-Bucy syndrome early in the disease. Language abnormalities were also prominent. Memory and spatial orientation were frequently spared until late. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated marked lobar atrophy in one of two patients examined. The early a

Kluver-Bucy syndrome following heat stroke in a 12-year-old girl.

A 12-year-old girl developed Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) following heat stroke. She demonstrated the features typical of human KBS, including visual agnosia, hypermetamorphosis, hypersexuality, language disorder with aphasia, hyperorality, placidity, flat affect, and memory dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging 11 1/2 months after onset disclosed mild, diffuse atrophy. Fourteen months after onset, she did not consistently respond to language or communicate verbally, and was dependent on others. A comparison is made with previously reported KBS cases in children.

[Kluver Bucy syndrome and central diabetes insipidus: two uncommon complications of herpes simplex encephalitis].

Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (HSE) is an uncommon but severe disease with high mortality and morbidity. The major clinical manifestations are deteriorating consciousness with confusion, drowsiness or coma, altered behaviour, convulsions and a variety of neurological signs (hemiplegia, aphasia, ataxia, etc.). An uncommon complication of HSE is Kluver Bucy syndrome (KBS), characterized by hyperorality, bulimia and changes in emotional behaviour. Neuroimaging studies frequently show an involvement of the temporal lobes and limbic areas. Another uncommon complication of HSE is central diabetes insi
