Risk of Dementia in Korean Vietnam War Veterans.

BACKGROUND: The number of cases of all types of dementia is increasing, and a significant increase in prevalence has been noted among veterans. Evidence of an association between dementia and exposure to chemicals such as Agent Orange from the Vietnam War is still limited, and there is a reported lack of awareness. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the risk of dementia among Vietnam War veterans in Korea. DESIGN: This retrospective longitudinal study compared the incidence of dementia between Vietnam War veterans and the general population. SETTING: This study used data from the na

Parasitic diseases as the cause of death of prisoners of war during the Korean War (1950-1953).

To determine the cause of death of prisoners of war during the Korean War (1950-1953), death certificates or medical records were analyzed. Out of 7,614 deaths, 5,013 (65.8%) were due to infectious diseases. Although dysentery and tuberculosis were the most common infectious diseases, parasitic diseases had caused 14 deaths: paragonimiasis in 5, malaria in 3, amoebiasis in 2, intestinal parasitosis in 2, ascariasis in 1, and schistosomiasis in 1. These results showed that paragonimiasis, malaria, and amoebiasis were the most fatal parasitic diseases during the early 1950s in the Korean Peninsu

DDT Resistance Korean Body Lice and Development of Insecticide Resistance Knowledge during Korean War.

DDT exemplifies success and failure of modern science and technology. Once it was heralded as technological wonder that will deliver human from misery of insect-borne infectious disease. However DDT took dramatic downturn after failure in global malaria eradication program initiated by World Health Organization, with advent of DDT-resistant strain of mosquitoes. Although insecticide resistance has been know since late 19th century, the definitions and mythologies for finding resistance has not been settled until 1950s. This paper argues that discovery of DDT-resistant strain of body lice in pr

Observations from the Korean War for Modern Military Medicine.

This paper reviews developments in military medicine during the Korean War and places them in the evolution of military medical lessons from the Second World War and the subsequent development of military medicine through the Vietnam War to the present day. The analysis is structured according to the '10 Instruments of Military Healthcare.' Whilst there were incremental developments in military medicine in all these areas, several innovations are specifically attributed to the Korean War. The introduction of helicopters to the battlefield led to the establishment of dedicated medical evacuatio

Cancer risk in Vietnam war veterans from the Korean Vietnam war veterans' health study cohort.

INTRODUCTION: During the Vietnam War, several unknown chemicals, such as Agent Orange, were used in Vietnam by the military. Therefore, there have been continuous health concerns among the Vietnamese population and veterans exposed to these hazardous chemicals. This study aimed to investigate the risk of all cancers and also organ-specific cancers among Korean veterans of the Vietnam War. METHODS: This study used a national representative cohort that included all Korean Vietnam War veterans as the interest group, with 1:4 age-sex-region-matched general Korean citizens as the reference group,

Osteochondrosis dissecans in glenoid cavity of Korean War casualty's scapula.

Since the first description of this disease in 1887, there are rare reports on osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) found in the glenoid cavity by way of anthropological studies. During an excavation project for recovery of the remains of Korean War casualties, a skeletonized soldier was found inside a cave fort at the Arrowhead Ridge of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), South Korea. In our recovery and examination of a Korean War casualty in DMZ, we identified a possible OCD in the individual's glenoid cavity of a right-sided scapula by radiological analysis and computed tomography reconstruction. Malnutrition and subsequent ischemic heart disease in former prisoners of war of World War II and the Korean conflict.

The harsh treatment of former prisoners of war (POWs) of World War II and the Korean conflict resulted in severe malnutrition. Although rarely linked to specific long-term medical problems, a specific marker of malnutrition, self-reported lower limb edema (presumably due to a vitamin B deficiency) was associated with a three-fold increase in subsequent death attributed to ischemic heart disease (IHD) during the follow-up period from 1967 through 1975. Although there is at present no medical basis for linking edema, which is perhaps a marker for some unmeasured risk factor, to subsequent IHD, t

Primary Care Considerations for Elderly U.S. Veterans of World War II and the Korean War: A Narrative Review.

Many of the United States' more than 18 million veterans obtain healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Veterans Health Administration system; however, recent legislative changes have expanded veterans' access to non-VA care in their communities, particularly for those who do not live near VA medical centers. Veterans are seen by physicians in outpatient practice across the United States and are admitted to non-VA hospitals; this is particularly salient for older veterans, who may require a more frequent and high level of care. We present a review of characteristics of U.S.

A confirmatory factor analysis of the Impact of Event Scale using a sample of World War II and Korean War veterans.

This study assessed the factor structure of the Impact of Event Scale (IES), a measure of intrusion and avoidance, using a sample of World War II and Korean War veterans who had experienced combat 40-50 years earlier. A series of 3 confirmatory factor analytic models were specified and estimated using LISREL 8.3. Model 1 specified a 1-factor model. Model 2 specified a correlated 2-factor model. Model 3 specified a 2-factor model with additional cross-factor loadings for Items 2 and 12. Model 3 was found to fit the data. In addition, this model was found to be a better explanation of the data t

History and Epidemiology of Bacillary Dysentery in Korea: from Korean War to 2017.

Dysentery has been a major illness for a long time in our country. During Korean war, bacillary dysentery was common illness as well as other infectious diseases such as typhus fever, and Shigella flexneri occupied more than 90% of the cases reported by UN forces. After the war, the Korean National Institute of Health began to monitor the disease as a legal communicable disease. The incidence of dysentery decreased gradually from 1960 through 1980s and consistently low until 1997, and common serotype has changed from S. flexneri to S. sonnei. However, a nationwide epidemic of dysentery occurre

Psychiatric Casualties during the Korean War: Focusing on American and Common Wealth Soldiers.

A crucial gap in the medical history of the Korean War is the history of psychiatry during the Korean War. War puts those who participate in it through physical and mental extremes, inflicting not only physical injuries but also psychological trauma and damage. However, studies of the medical aspects of the Korean War have been limited to topics related to physical injuries and their treatment, and there are no studies that systematically summarize the traumatic effects on the human mind thrown into the midst of the war, the consequences of these effects, and the medical efforts made to deal w

Arnold Max Meirowsky: champion of the American mobile neurosurgical unit during the Korean War.

Dr. Arnold Max Meirowsky (1910-1984) was enormously influential to military neurosurgery during the Korean War, introducing to the American military the concept of the mobile neurosurgical unit. After implementation of the neurosurgical detachment, meningocerebral infections saw a decrease from 41% to less than 1%, with similar improvements in mortality and complication rates. Additionally, Meirowsky developed many techniques and improvements in neurosurgery, specifically in the field of neurosurgical trauma, which he dedicated himself to even after reentering civilian practice. Furthermore, h

Vulnerability and resilience among older South Korean Vietnam war veterans: A latent profile analysis.

Relatively little is known about South Korean Vietnam War veterans, despite their being the second largest contingent of troops during the Vietnam War. Earlier research found elevated levels (39%) of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in this older population, due to high exposure to combat and malevolent environments (Lee et al., 2020). The present study investigated classes of vulnerability and resilience among older South Korean Vietnam War veterans, using a latent profile analysis (LPA) on PTSD symptoms, late onset stress symptomology (LOSS), and mental well-being (MWB). The sample cons

Malaria Relapses Following Parasite-Free Blood Transfusions in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Latent Plasmodium vivax parasites in the liver known as hypnozoites activate causing malaria relapses months after the original infection. The putative initiation signal is unknown. Plasmodium falciparum infections appear to trigger P. vivax relapses and initiation of relapse may be triggered by hemolysis or fever. The U.S. Army hospital records from the Korean War (> 500,000 individual records) were used to determine whether there was an association between blood transfusion and vivax malaria relapse. Importantly, blood for transfusion was collected in the United States, so the risk of transm

Evidence of poorer life-course mental health outcomes among veterans of the Korean War cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Comparing the outcomes of veterans who served in Korea and those who served elsewhere, we examined the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), other mental health conditions, psychiatric treatment locations, and six mental health well-being measures. METHODS: The analytic sample consisted of nationally representative data from the 2001 National Survey of Veterans (NSV). Analyses included multiple logistic regressions that controlled for sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS: Korean era veterans in the NSV (n = 4030): 1498 served in Korea; 2532 elsewhere during the

Air sinus wounds: an analysis of 163 consecutive cases incurred in the Korean War, 1950-1952.

Review of 1105 records patients with penetrating craniocerebral injuries incurred in the Korean War revealed 163 cases with air sinus wounds, an incidence of 14.8%. The characteristics of these wounds and their surgical management have been described. Foremost among the complications of air sinus wounds are the development of a cerebrospinal fluid fistula and the occurrence of posttraumatic infection. Prompt and radical debridement with exenteration of the affected sinus and watertight closure of the dura mater represent the key to the reduction of complications when dealing with penetrating w
