Extraction, Phytochemical Analysis, and Bioactivity Evaluation of Polyphenols from Kunzea ericoides (Kanuka) Plant.

Kunzea ericoides (kanuka), a native plant of New Zealand, has a significant role in traditional medicine due to the presence of essential oils. Apart from these oils, this plant also is a source of many bioactive compounds, majority of which are polyphenols. However, there is lack of sufficient data supporting the extraction of polyphenols from kanuka plant leaves and investigating its bioactivity and phytochemical properties. The study aims to extract polyphenols from kanuka plant leaves with a conventional solvent-based method and determine the phytochemical analysis as well as bioactive pot

Characterisation of volatile organic compounds of kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) subcritical water extract: A comparative analysis.

Kānuka (Kunzea ericoides) is a traditional medicinal plant enriched with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with known antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, myorelaxant, antiviral, and insecticidal properties. Despite its known bioactive properties, a comprehensive VOCs profile of kānuka remains unexplored. This study evaluated the efficiency of subcritical water extraction (SWE) in profiling kānuka leaf VOCs, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and compared the results conventional extraction methodologies, including steam distillation (SD) and solvent extraction (SE). Antimicrobial-guided metabolomic analysis of essential oil derived from the Aotearoa New Zealand endemic plant Kunzea robusta (Kānuka).

Traditional medicine has been the source of many modern drugs. To explore the pharmaceutical potential of extracts from a taonga (treasured Indigenous plant) species, we obtained an unbiased GC-MS profile of 84 compounds from 99 samples of kānuka oil collected from five land blocks across two seasons. Multivariate analysis correlated the compound profiles with antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-acne activities as determined via growth inhibition of Candida albicans, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Propionibacterium acnes, respectively. The kānuka oil samples had the gr

β-Triketones from Leptospermum scoparium (mānuka) oil show potential as scabicides.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a debilitating and neglected infectious disease with limited effective treatment options and affecting millions of people worldwide, mainly in poor and overcrowded settings. Essential oils from Australasian Myrtaceae are known to have parasiticidal properties, often attributed to the presence of β-triketones, which are known inhibitors of the tyrosine catabolism pathway through inhibition of hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD). PURPOSE: In this study, essential oils from mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium) were evaluated in vitro for miticidal and ovicidal activities a

Can alternative sugar sources buffer pollinators from nectar shortages?

Honeydew is abundant in many ecosystems and may provide an alternative food source (a buffer) for pollinators during periods of food shortage, but the impact of honeydew on pollination systems has received little attention to date. In New Zealand, kānuka trees (Myrtaceae: Kunzea ericoides (A. Rich) Joy Thompson) are often heavily infested by the endemic honeydew-producing scale insect Coelostomidia wairoensis (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Coelostomidiidae) and the period of high honeydew production can overlap with kānuka flowering. In this study, we quantified the sugar resources (honeydew and nectar

The Therapeutic Potential of Essential Oils in Managing Inflammatory Skin Conditions: A Scoping Review.

Conventional therapy is commonly used for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, but undesirable effects, such as erythema, dryness, skin thinning, and resistance to treatment, may cause poor patient compliance. Therefore, patients may seek complementary treatment with herbal plant products including essential oils (EOs). This scoping review aims to generate a broad overview of the EOs used to treat inflammatory skin conditions, namely, acne vulgaris, dermatitis and eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, in a clinical setting. The quality, efficacy, and safety of various EOs, as well as the w

Trade-offs between environmental and economic factors in conversion from exotic pine production to natural regeneration on erosion prone land.

BACKGROUND: Some of New Zealand's exotic pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) forests were planted for erosion mitigation but cultural, legislative, environmental, and profitability limitations in some parts of the landscape have led to reassessment of their suitability. There is limited information to support landowner decisions on the viability of natural regeneration of native forest post-pine-harvest. METHODS: We evaluated scenarios of post-harvest natural regeneration, compared to remaining in pine production, using erosion susceptibility determined from historical occurrence of landslides, gullie

Protocol for a randomised controlled trial of 90% kanuka honey versus 5% aciclovir for the treatment of herpes simplex labialis in the community setting.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, about 90% of people are infected with the herpes simplex virus, 30% of whom will experience recurrent herpes simplex labialis, commonly referred to as 'cold sores', which can last up to 10 days. The most common treatment is aciclovir cream which reduces healing time by just half a day compared with no specific treatment. This is a protocol for a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine the efficacy of medical grade kanuka honey-based topical treatment (Honevo) in reducing the healing time and pain of cold sores, compared with topical aciclovir treatment (Viraban)

Essential oils and their constituents as anticancer agents: a mechanistic view.

Exploring natural plant products as an option to find new chemical entities as anticancer agents is one of the fastest growing areas of research. Recently, in the last decade, essential oils (EOs) have been under study for their use in cancer therapy and the present review is an attempt to collect and document the available studies indicating EOs and their constituents as anticancer agents. This review enlists nearly 130 studies of EOs from various plant species and their constituents that have been studied so far for their anticancer potential and these studies have been classified as in vitr

Natural Compounds with Potential to Modulate Cancer Therapies and Self-Reactive Immune Cells.

Cancer-related deaths are approaching 10 million each year. Survival statistics for some cancers, such as ovarian cancer, have remained unchanged for decades, with women diagnosed at stage III or IV having over 80% chance of a lethal cancer recurrence after standard first-line treatment (reductive surgery and chemotherapy). New treatments and adjunct therapies are needed. In ovarian cancer, as in other cancers, the immune response, particularly cytotoxic (CD8+) T cells are correlated with a decreased risk of recurrence. As well as completely new antigen targets resulting from DNA mutations (ne
