Kyphoplasty is a relatively new procedure that is indicated for the treatment of osteoporotic or pathologic compression fractures of the thoracic and/or lumbar spine. This minimally invasive procedure requires imaging guidance. Kyphoplasty entails the inflation of a balloon tamp, prior to the injection of opacified acrylic bone cement, within the compressed vertebral body in an attempt to restore vertebral body height and reduce the associated kyphotic deformity. Preliminary studies show that kyphoplasty, like vertebroplasty, provides significant pain relief in properly selected patients. Defi

The advent of the use of kyphoplasty in 1998 was the result of the expected evolution of materials and methods related to the successful introduction of vertebroplasty as a valid treatment of painful vertebral compression fractures. Kyphoplasty introduced a method of creating bilateral bone voids and in many cases elevation (reduction) of depressed end plates with variable degrees of height restoration. This was achieved by using bilateral balloon bone tamps capable of pressures significantly higher than conventional angioplasty balloons. This allows creation of bilateral bone voids, resulting

BACKGROUND: Kyphoplasty is used to alleviate pain and to restore the initial height of osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF). One of the most recent procedures is radiofrequency-targeted vertebral augmentation (RFTVA). We investigated whether restoration with this method is similar and as adequate as with the established procedure of balloon kyphoplasty (BKP), as assessed by the anatomical height of the vertebral body. The aim of our study was to compare the intravertebral angles (base-endplate) post- and preoperatively with these two procedures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The base and endplate a

Vertebral compression fractures are common in elderly populations and in particular in postmenopausal women as a consequence of osteoporosis. Percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures that are increasingly used to treat persistent or severe acute pain from these fractures. Vertebroplasty works by augmenting the weak osteopenic vertebrae with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement and thus preventing further microfractures and associated pain. The aim of kyphoplasty is pain relief combined with restoration of vertebral body height and reduction in kyphosis

Percutaneous vertebral augmentation techniques performed with vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty are safe and effective for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, primary or secondary spine tumors, and selected traumatic fractures. This article compares the procedures and outlines their advantages and disadvantages. It concludes that vertebroplasty should be performed in most cases, but kyphoplasty is preferable in selected cases.

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures are the most common manifestation of osteoporosis. Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) can lead to both pain improvement and correction of kyphosis secondary to collapsed vertebral bodies. Robot-assisted (RA) PKP has been reported to provide better vertebral body fracture correction than conventional fluoroscopy-assisted (FA) PKP. The aim of this meta-analysis is to compare clinical outcomes of RA PKP versus FA PKP. The Pubmed, Embase, and MEDLINE electronic databases were searched from January 1900 to December 2022, with no language restrictions for rel

OBJECTIVE: Vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis are seen frequently. Osteoporotic compression fractures can cause severe pain, limitation of physical activities and impairment of quality of life. Kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure, could be effective in many cases and can provide fast pain relief.
CASE: A patient with a history of falling from a height of 8 months duration visited our pain clinic. Opioids and anti-inflammatory analgesics were administered together with physical therapy and facet joint injections with no improvement. Radiological examination of the pati

BackgroundKyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery developed to restore height and stabilize painful vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). Only small retrospective studies have addressed the correlation between the degree of vertebral height restoration as it relates to pain relief and postoperative activity levels. No definitive correlations have been established. The objective of this analysis is to determine how height restoration correlates with improvements in pain, disability and quality of life.MethodsWe assessed outcomes following kyphoplasty in 59 Medicare-eligible patients with

An 80-year-old female with a history of osteoporosis was evaluated for sudden onset axial low back pain with bilateral lower extremity weakness, hyperreflexia, pain, urinary retention, and decreased rectal tone. Computed tomography of the lumbar spine revealed L1 compression fracture, retropulsion of bone causing spinal canal compromise with associated severe central canal stenosis. Following cement kyphoplasty of L1 with polymethyl methacrylate, the patient developed tachycardia and dyspnea. Chest radiograph and computed tomographic pulmonary angiogram revealed a large collection of hyperdens

BACKGROUND: Although percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) is performed to restore the vertebral body height and kyphosis in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs), the regained height may be lost on balloon deflation. This study compares PKP with modified percutaneous kyphoplasty (MPKP) in terms of the clinical outcomes in treating OVCFs.
METHODS: Between May 2014 and March 2016, 76 patients with OVCFs were randomly assigned to 2 groups according to the procedure chosen: the PKP group (n = 36) and MPKP group (n = 40). Perioperative parameters, radiologic data, and other clinical param

BACKGROUND: Cement leakage is regarded as a typical complication of cement-based augmentation of vertebral fractures. The gold standard is balloon kyphoplasty (BK). Recent methods, such as radiofrequency kyphoplasty (RFK), must be compared with BK in terms of therapeutic success and complication rates. It is unclear whether the cement leakage rate in RFK is lower than with BK and whether this has any clinical relevance. Therefore, the aim of our prospective clinical study was to compare RFK with BK with respect to cement leakage rates and associated clinical complications.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to examine the utilization of kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty procedures in the management of compression fractures. With the growing elderly population and the associated increase in rates of osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures have become a daily encounter for spine surgeons. However, there remains a lack of consensus on the optimal management of this patient population.MethodsA retrospective analysis of 91 million longitudinally followed patients from 2016 to 2019 was performed using the PearlDiver Patient Claims Database. Patients with compression

CLINICAL ISSUE: Painful vertebral compression fractures.
STANDARD TREATMENT: Analgesia.
TREATMENT INNOVATIONS: Osteoplastic procedures, such as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty.
DIAGNOSTIC WORKUP: Anamnestic and radiological associations of clinical complaints with the radiomorphological findings of vertebral compression fractures are required for an adequate consideration to assess whether an osteoplastic procedure should be carried out. A computed tomography (CT) scan allows a reliable judgement whether an osteoplastic procedure is technically feasible and promising to improve the local ver

Kyphoplasty has been the standard procedure for osteoporotic fractures for more than 5 years but the material costs are still very high. The aim of this study was to clarify whether pain reduction could be achieved without increasing the rate of new fractures and also in what areas costs could possibly be reduced. From 15.01.2007 until 15.01.2008, a total of 100 patients with 126 recent osteoporotic spinal fractures were treated by kyphoplasty with an average operation time of 38 min and follow-up times up to 12 months. During this follow-up period 15 lateral and 2 dorsal cement leakages remai
