Human alveolar echinococcosis in Kyrgyzstan.

Human echinococcosis is a reportable disease in Kyrgyzstan. Between 1995 and 2011, human alveolar echinococcosis increased from <3 cases per year to >60 cases per year. The origins of this epidemic, which started in 2004, may be linked to the socioeconomic changes that followed the dissolution of the former Soviet Union.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus, Kyrgyzstan.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is an emerging pathogen in Europe and Asia. We investigated TBEV in Kyrgyzstan by collecting small mammals and ticks from diverse localities and analyzing them for evidence of TBEV infection. We found TBEV circulating in Kyrgyzstan much farther south and at higher altitudes than previously reported.

Brucellosis in Humans and Animals in Kyrgyzstan.

Brucellosis is a globally reemerging and neglected zoonosis causing serious public health problems as well as considerable economic losses due to infection of livestock. Although the epidemiology of brucellosis has been well studied and its various aspects in humans and animals are well understood, it is still one of the most challenging health problems in many developing countries such as Kyrgyzstan. This review describes epidemiological characteristics of brucellosis in humans and animals, its impact on animal production and the role of implemented infection control measures in Kyrgyzstan. P

The Burden of Serious Fungal Infections in Kyrgyzstan.

: Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia has a population of 6 million people who have high mortality rates for chronic lung diseases. The mountainous geography, widespread use of biomass fuels for cooking and indoor heating, and high rates of smoking are the major contributing factors. We have estimated the number of serious fungal infections in order to define the burden of these diseases in Kyrgyzstan. We estimated 774 cases of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) as a sequel of tuberculosis (TB); CPA occurs as a sequel of multiple conditions, so a total prevalence of 3097 cases was estimated, which i

The Burden of Zoonoses in Kyrgyzstan: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Zoonotic disease (ZD) pose a serious threat to human health in low-income countries. In these countries the human burden of disease is often underestimated due to insufficient monitoring because of insufficient funding. Quantification of the impact of zoonoses helps in prioritizing healthcare needs. Kyrgyzstan is a poor, mountainous country with 48% of the population employed in agriculture and one third of the population living below the poverty line. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have assessed the burden of zoonoses in Kyrgyzstan by conducting a systematic review. We have

Intense Focus of Alveolar Echinococcosis, South Kyrgyzstan.

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a highly pathogenic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus multilocularis. An ultrasound study in southern Kyrgyzstan during 2012 revealed a prevalence of 4.2% probable or confirmed AE and an additional 2.2% possible AE, representing an emerging situation. The risk for probable or confirmed AE was significantly higher in dog owners.

Household mobility responses to weather extremes in Kyrgyzstan.

Weather extremes increasingly shape human mobility, yet their effects differ across households and locations. We advance understanding of climate-related mobility by distinguishing among four outcomes: domestic mobility, international mobility, combined domestic-international mobility, and immobility, rather than treating mobility as a simple binary choice. Focusing on Kyrgyzstan, a climate-vulnerable mountainous country in Central Asia, we combine nationally representative household panel data from 2013-2022 with high-resolution climate data. Here, we show that weather extremes, both within d

Prevalence of Neospora caninum in cows and sheep in Kyrgyzstan.

This study determined the prevalence of Neospora caninum in cows and sheep in Kyrgyzstan, as well as the incidence of this parasite in infertile cows and sheep that had aborted. For this purpose, 507 cows and 502 sheep from commercial farms in different regions of the country were investigated. Individual blood samples were taken from all sheep and cows. The animals included 70 sheep that had aborted, 104 normal pregnant sheep, 173 newly parturient sheep, and 155 infertile sheep, as well as 36 cows that had aborted, 244 normal pregnant cows, 140 fresh cows, and 87 repeat-breeder cows. Microbiological aetiology of paediatric respiratory tract infections in Kyrgyzstan.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Aetiologic virus and bacteria vary geographically. To date, no systematic data on RTI aetiologies have been published from Kyrgyzstan, a country with a high under-five mortality from lower RTIs and a widespread overuse of antibiotics. We aimed to identify the aetiologies of RTI in children in Kyrgyzstan and to assess the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) vaccination rate and the correlation with the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae in our population. METHODS: We coll

Genetic Diversity of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus in Kyrgyzstan.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a severe disease of the human central nervous system. Currently, the data on the genetic variants of TBEV in Kyrgyzstan are practically absent. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze and describe the genetic diversity of TBEV in this region. The complete genome sequences of seven TBEV strains from the collection of the Scientific Centre for Family Health and Human Reproduction Problems (Irkutsk, Russia) were determined. These strains, isolated from Ixodes persulcatus ticks from Kyrgyzstan, were sequenced using

Human infections with Dicrocoelium dendriticum in Kyrgyzstan: the tip of the iceberg?

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is the causative agent of a rare food-borne zoonosis of the human biliary tract, dicrocoeliasis, for which few human prevalence data are available. Infection occurs through the ingestion of ants containing metacercariae, whereas pseudo-infections (presence of D. dendriticum eggs in stool in the absence of adult worms) are due to the consumption of infected animal liver. Here, results from a cross-sectional survey carried out among 138 children aged 2-15 yr in a peri-urban area of Kyrgyzstan are reported. Each child provided 1 stool sample that was subjected to the FLOT

First molecular survey of piroplasm species in cattle from Kyrgyzstan.

Bovine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by apicomplexan hemoparasites of the genera Theileria and Babesia. This study was carried out to assess the presence and frequency of piroplasm parasites in apparently healthy cattle in Kyrgyzstan. A total of 454 blood samples were collected from animals of various ages in eight villages located in the Chu valley and around the Lake Issyk Kul. The hypervariable V4 region of the 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene was amplified with a set of primers specific targeting members of the genera Theileria and Babesia. Amplified PCR products were hybridize

A supplement to the Scolytinae and Platypodinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) faunas of Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.

Bark beetles and pinhole borers of Georgia and Kyrgyzstan were surveyed between 2003 to 2025. Specimens were collected using pheromone traps baited with Acuwit, IAC Ecolure, Sexowit, Tomowit, and ethanol; 0.5-m-long logs exposed for bark beetle colonisation; direct hand collecting in the field; searches for potential feeding substrates; and rearing from infested host material. We present 51 faunistic records of bark beetles and pinhole borers, comprising 44 species from Georgia and seven from Kyrgyzstan. One taxon is newly recorded from Georgia: Pityophthoruspityographus cribratus. Finally, we

Stigmatization and discrimination of female tuberculosis patients in Kyrgyzstan - a phenomenological study.

INTRODUCTION: The Republic of Kyrgyzstan is among the 30 countries with the highest burden of multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis worldwide. One of the reasons is widespread stigmatization and discrimination. As previous research has shown, particularly women experience stigma while its impact on their life and (mental) health is even greater than for men. This is the first phenomenological study to explore women's lived experiences of TB-related stigmatization in Kyrgyzstan. This study aims to raise awareness about the gender-specific impact of stigmatization and discrimination. METHODOLOGY: De

Data on recent measles cases at the Jalal-Abad city of Kyrgyzstan.

Measles caused by the virus is highly infectious and sometimes fatal, but it is prevented through vaccination. In Kyrgyzstan, measles cases were initially documented in September 2023, with a notable escalation observed between November and December of the same year. Children aged 3-5 years and 1-2 years exhibited the highest prevalence rates, followed by infants under one year old. Unvaccinated children constituted the majority of cases, with schoolchildren and kindergarten attendees also affected. Surprisingly, a significant proportion of measles cases occurred in vaccinated children, primar
