Lacan's reinterpretation of Freud's theory on trauma Abstract In this article we consider the Lacanian theory of trauma, with the aim of demonstrating which of Freud's theories Lacan sought to build on and develop in his own model. This approach highlights the continuity, as well as the divergences, between Lacanian psychoanalysis and the Freudian model of trauma. Approaching Lacanian psychoanalysis through the concept of trauma reveals how his theories did not focus only on the subject as determined by the register of language. Rather, Lacanian psychoanalysis emphasises the intimate relations

This article examines musical meaning through the lens of Lacanian psychoanalysis. While music and language are often treated as fundamentally different forms of communication, both are shaped by structures of meaning that resist complete articulation. Drawing on Lacan's theory of the signifier, the Real, and the non-all, as well as Alenka Zupančič's account of the missing signifier, I argue that music cannot be understood as organized around a missing signifier in the same way as language. Rather, music is non-all: it generates meaning without being reducible to a universal or totalizing syst

Otto Rank identified the trauma of birth and its psychological sequelae. Subsequently, the manifold observations made by pre- and perinatal natal psychology show that prenatal and birth experiences have a formative character for the individual. In the present article, we emphasize the relationship that might exist between Lacan's Real and the Prenatal. Both are characterized by the fact that there is no "symbolization," (i.e., there is neither the formation of imaginary nor symbolic thoughts). However, we propose that the unborn develops a consciousness that takes in the effects of the real. T

From Jacques Lacan's theory of anxiety, principles are deduced for a Lacanian-oriented treatment of panic disorder. This Lacanian approach is related to Freud's theory of the actual neuroses, and is comparable in some ways with the approach taken in Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP). The Lacanian conceptualization of panic retains the idea that both repressed material and unsymbolized mental states lie at its basis. People suffering from panic attacks are overwhelmed by signifiers, aspects of corporeal excitation, and/or existential questions that remain too Real. Psychoanalytic

Dr. Gregory Rizzolo's recent JAPA article refers to my book, Lacanian Psychotherapy: Theory and Practical Applications, to support his critique of Lacanian psychoanalysis. I respond here to his characterization of my position on countertransference, as well as Lacan's. Despite our differences on the the texts in question, I suggest that on substance, Dr. Rizzolo and I agree more than we disagree.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset psychosis and anorexia nervosa, while traditionally conceptualised as distinct disorders, demonstrate significant clinical overlap, particularly during adolescence. This period of profound bodily and identity transformation is a critical window where both conditions can emerge, sometimes with complex, overlapping symptoms. However, existing explanatory frameworks often fail to account for this comorbidity, leaving a conceptual gap.
AIMS: This hypothesis paper proposes that anorexia nervosa, when emerging in the context of adolescent psychosis, functions as a 'negative

This paper examines the principal ideas from Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory of psychosis. According to Lacan's theory in the 1950s, the central organizing element of symbolically organized mental life, the Name-of-the-Father, is missing in psychosis. That theory changes with later conceptual developments in Lacan's work that focus on the incompleteness of symbolic functioning. This connects with how, in his works from the late 1960s and the 1970s, Lacan embraces the idea of a fundamental non-rapport and symbolic non-existence at the basis of mental life. In a second step, the paper expl

This essay places psychiatrist and philosopher Frantz Fanon's anti-colonial, anti-racist message from Peau Noire, Masques Blancs/Black Skin, White Masks (1952; 1967; 2008) in conversation with the new diagnoses of "Gender Dysphoria" and "Transvestic Disorder" in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). Specifically, the essay discusses sexologist Ray Blanchard's controversial theory of autogynephilia alongside Fanon's ambivalent rendering of transgender desire and interracial trans phenomenology in a crucial but frequently overlooked passage in Bl
