BACKGROUND: Men's intercollegiate lacrosse is played at a fast pace and with significant force. Glove protection is required. However, the thumb is at risk because of contact with opponents' sticks, the ball, other players, and the ground or artificial surface.
PURPOSE: To characterize patterns of hand injuries in men's intercollegiate lacrosse and to compare them with those in similar intercollegiate stick-handling sports that require gloves.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Injury Surveillance System was utilized to

Paget Schroetter Syndrome (PSS) or "effort thrombosis" is a rare form of primary upper extremity deep vein thrombosis often seen in individuals with anatomic variants involving the thoracic outlet and exacerbated by repetitive microtrauma to the subclavian vein. Diagnosis can be made with ultrasound and confirmed with MR venography or conventional venography. We report a case of PSS in a young male athlete who was treated with pharmacologic and mechanical thrombolysis.

Concussion screening among collegiate lacrosse athletes is a major safety priority. Although attention has been directed at concussion management following injury, less is known about the association between cognition and balance during preseason screening. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between balance and neurocognition among collegiate male lacrosse players and to examine predictive determinants of postural stability. Participants included a convenience sample of 49 male collegiate Division 3 lacrosse players who completed a demographic survey and performed the imme

Boys'/men's and girls'/women's lacrosse are the fastest-growing sports at the high school and college levels and are team sports with unique medical issues and injuries. The rules of the game are very different for the women's game compared with those for the men's game. Youth rules include modifications that take into account physical and cognitive maturational differences. Given the unique rules of the game between genders, the equipment requirements also are different. The most common injuries in lacrosse for both genders across all ages are lower extremity injuries and, primarily, ankle an

The purpose of this investigation was to describe anthropometric and physical performance characteristics of Division I college female lacrosse players. An additional aim of the study was to examine positional differences in this sample of athletes. Eighty-four university lacrosse players (age=19.8+/-1.1 years; height=168.3+/-5.9 cm; body mass=64.7+/-6.9 kg) volunteered to participate and were evaluated at the end of their off-season. Test items included standing height, body mass, linear sprint speed (9.14-36.58 m), agility (pro-agility and Illinois), countermovement jump height and the 20 Me

PURPOSE: Mandating headgear for field players in girls' lacrosse to reduce head injuries, including concussion, has been heavily debated. However, research regarding the need and effectiveness of mandated headgear use in girls' lacrosse is still developing. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to identify the need for and barriers to the development of mandated headgear use policies in girls' lacrosse in Ohio.
METHODS: We conducted six virtual focus groups, three with concussion experts (clinicians and researchers) and three with girls' lacrosse stakeholders (high school players, parents,

INTRODUCTION: Lacrosse is played widely across the United States, as evidenced by growing participation in the sport. The rapid increase in participation suggests that many of the new players are inexperienced. Many coaches might be ill-equipped to deal with player trauma. There are several crucial differences in the way the sports are played between males and females, altering the experience of the game and the injury profiles that may arise.
METHODS: A query of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was performed to study the types of craniofacial injuries incurred from

BACKGROUND: Boys' lacrosse (LAX), a full contact sport allowing body and stick checking, mandates hard shell helmets with full face masks. Girls' LAX, which prohibits body checking and whose sphere rule is supposed to prevent stick checking to the head, allows optional flexible headgear with/without integrated eye protection. Whether the required boys' LAX helmets should also be mandated in girls' LAX has been debated.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study we used LAX concussion data from a national high school sports-related injury surveillance study to determine if girls' LAX players

OBJECTIVE: To explore diverse stakeholders' perceptions of headgear use in collegiate women's lacrosse.
PARTICIPANTS: 189 collegiate women's lacrosse stakeholders (players: n = 87; coaches: n = 71; officials: n = 32).
METHODS: Participants completed online open-ended qualitative questions surrounding headgear use in the sport. Responses were coded by the research team via inductive reasoning.
RESULTS: Stakeholders felt that incorporating headgear use into women's lacrosse would increase aggression and change the nature of the sport. Some felt that headgear was important for injury risk miti

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact attenuation properties of women's lacrosse headgear and to characterize mechanical properties of the materials of which they are composed. Impacts using a linear impactor (2.2, 2.9, and 5.0 m/s) and a projectile shooter (13.4 and 27.0 m/s) were applied to a Hybrid III 50th male head-neck assembly at six impact locations to replicate realistic women's lacrosse head impacts. Individual materials that make up the headgear were tested in compression at two quasi-static strain rates, 0.01/s and1/s, and 100/s using uniaxial test machines. For the l

This study sought to describe head impact exposure in women's collegiate club lacrosse. Eleven women's collegiate club lacrosse players wore head impact sensors during eight intercollegiate competitions. Video recordings of competitions were used to verify impact data. Athletes completed questionnaires detailing their concussion history and perceived head impact exposure. During the monitored games, no diagnosed concussions were sustained. Three athletes reported sustaining head impacts (median = 0; range: 0-3 impacts per game). Six impacts registered by the sensors were verified on video acro

OBJECTIVE: Athletic field risks associated with blunt, nonpenetrating chest blows (commotio cordis) are receiving increasing attention, but the epidemiology of these events is incomplete.
METHODS: We assessed our Sudden Death in Young Athletes Registry, 1980-2008, to formulate a clinical profile of those sudden deaths attributed to commotio cordis (and other causes) occurring in competitive lacrosse, the most rapidly growing youth sport in the United States.
RESULTS: Twenty-three sudden deaths or cardiac arrests were identified in high school and college lacrosse participants. Ages were 18 +

Lacrosse imposes multiple simultaneous physical demands during play including throwing and catching a ball while holding a crosse, running, cutting, and jumping. Often, these skills are completed while experiencing contact from another player leading to both on-and-off platform movements. Other motions include defensive blocking and pushing past defenders. Repetitive motions over sustained durations in practice or competition impart mechanical stresses to the shoulder or elbow joints, supportive muscles, and connective tissue. Preparation for lacrosse participation involves bilateral optimizat

OBJECTIVE: The implementation of a headgear mandate in girls' lacrosse has encountered concerns that the use of headgear may lead to risk-taking behaviors, thereby causing more aggressive gameplay. This study aims to investigate perceptions of headgear use and the potential effect of headgear on risk compensation.
METHODS: Adolescent female aged 13-19 years participating on a high school or club girls' lacrosse team completed a Qualtrics survey consisting of questions about age, years of experience, player position, headgear use, the effect headgear would have on their gameplay and completed

Headgear adoption is a controversial issue in girls' lacrosse due to concerns that headgear use will facilitate greater risk-taking by players and contribute to more aggressive game play behaviours. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate high school girls' lacrosse players' attitudes towards headgear before and after a season of use. Twenty-five high school girls' lacrosse athletes wore headgear for one competitive season and completed a pre- and post-season survey. The survey evaluated players' attitudes towards headgear use, with Aggressiveness, and Anger scales. Wilcoxon ranked tes

INTRODUCTION: There has been controversy regarding whether headgear use in women's lacrosse will affect the rate of head and musculoskeletal injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mandated headgear use on the rate of head and musculoskeletal injuries in high school women's lacrosse.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of eight high school women's lacrosse teams and their game op-ponents who were mandated to wear F3137 headgear for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Athletic trainers documented all injuries that occurred as a result of participation on the lacros

Spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon at the wrist has been reported with predisposing factors to include distal radius fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic or local steroids, and repetitive abnormal motion of the wrist joint. We present a case of an 18-year-old college lacrosse player without history of known predisposing factors who presented with an acute inability to extend the interphalangeal (IP) joint of his right thumb. Preoperative musculoskeletal ultrasound demonstrated rupture of the EPL tendon proximal to the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb.
