Inactivation of Lactobacillus delbrueckii bacteriophages by heat and biocides.

The effect of several biocides and thermal treatments on the viability of four Lactobacillus delbrueckii phages was investigated. Time to achieve 99% inactivation of phages at 63 and 72 degrees C in three suspension media (Tris Magnesium Gelatin (TMG) buffer, Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) broth and reconstituted nonfat dry skim milk (RSM)) was calculated. Thermal resistance depended on the phage considered, but a marked heat-resistance was exhibited by one phage (Ib(3)) since its high titre suspensions were completely inactivated only after 45 min at 72 degrees C or 15 min at 90 degrees C. A clear p

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus Alleviates Acute Injury in Hypoxic Mice.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a common ailment in high-altitude areas caused by the body's inadequate adaptation to low-pressure, low-oxygen environments, leading to organ edema, oxidative stress, and impaired intestinal barrier function. The gastrointestinal tract, being the first to be affected by ischemia and hypoxia, is highly susceptible to injury. This study investigates the role of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus in alleviating acute hypoxic-induced intestinal and tissue damage from the perspective of daily consumed lactic acid bacteria. An acute hypoxia mouse model was e

The innovative potential of Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR06, Lactobacillus pentosus LPS01, Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii Subsp. delbrueckii LDD01 to restore the "gastric barrier effect" in patients chronically treated with PPI: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a very widespread condition. In Europe, it is estimated that about 175 million people suffer from this disease and have to chronically take drugs to increase gastric pH. The proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole, lansoprazole, and esomeprazole are the most widely used drug typology in this regard. However, the inhibition of normal gastric acid secretion has important side effects, the most important being bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and duodenum with a concentration of >10⁵ viable cells/mL. As a major consequence of this, many h

Lactobacillus delbrueckii surface protein P4430 attenuates intestinal inflammation by modulating macrophage polarization via Mincle.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by intestinal inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and dysbiosis, with limited treatment options. Here, we demonstrate that Lactobacillus delbrueckii is commonly reduced in low-birth-weight piglets, dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice, and UC patients. L. delbrueckii and its surface proteins mitigate intestinal inflammation in a macrophage-dependent manner. We further identify P4430, a DUF4430-domain-containing protein, as a key surface protein that protects against intestinal inflammation by suppressing M1 polarization and downregulating in

Quantitative analysis of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus cell division and death using fluorescent dye tracking.

Cell growth of lactic acid bacteria is of vital importance in starter culture manufacture in the dairy industry. However, one of the major stumbling blocks in the understanding of bacterial cell growth relates to challenges in the quantification of the cell division or death. To overcome these shortcomings, the intracellular fluorescent cell tracking assay was implemented to monitor Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus sp1.1 cell division and death. Optimization of fluorescent dye concentration suggested it could be applied in the tracking of cell division without cytotoxicity. Technica
