Lactobacillus gasseri as the cause of septic urinary infection.

A 66-year-old patient developed severe urinary stasis due to a concrement in his right ureter; foudroyant septicemia followed. Lactobacillus gasseri was grown from pyoid urine from the right renal pelvis and in two blood cultures, thus suggesting septic urinary infection caused by lactobacilli. The infection was cured by catheterisation of right ureter and antibiotic treatment with cefotaxime and amoxicillin. The concrement was removed by dissolution. Diabetes and urinary stasis appear to be the main predisposing factors for this exceptional case of septic urinary infection caused by L. gasser

Therapeutic Value of Lactobacillus gasseri 345A in Chronic Constipation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation is a prevalent, burdensome gastrointestinal disorder whose etiology and pathophysiology remain poorly understood. Differences in the composition of the intestinal microbiota have been shown between constipated patients and healthy people. Data indicate that these microbial differences contribute to the disorder. METHODS: Preclinical studies in mice examined the effects of Lactobacillus gasseri on intestinal motility ex vivo, the reversal of motility inhibition by μ-opioid receptor agonists ex vivo and in vivo in mice, and the effects on capsaicin-stimulated tr

Lactobacillus gasseri liver abscess and bacteremia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive non-spore-forming rods usually found in the microbiota of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genitourinary tract. Also, they are commonly used in the food industry as supplements and probiotics. Lactobacilli are normally considered non-pathogenic to the human body, however, under certain circumstances such as immunosuppression, they can cause severe infections, with only a few cases of bacteremia, infective endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, and intra-abdominal infections reported. Among these presentations, a pyogenic li

Characterization of a Lactobacillus gasseri strain as a probiotic for female vaginitis.

Vaginitis, a prevalent gynecological condition in women, is mainly caused by an imbalance in the vaginal micro-ecology. The two most common types of vaginitis are vaginal bacteriosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis, triggered by the virulent Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans, respectively. In this study, a strain capable of inhibiting G. vaginalis and C. albicans was screened from vaginal secretions and identified as Lactobacillus gasseri based on 16S rRNA sequences. The strain, named L. gasseri VHProbi E09, could inhibit the growth of G. vaginalis and C. albicans under co-culture condit

Lactobacillus gasseri postbiotics ameliorate age-related decline in endometrial receptivity.

Endometrial senescence contributes to a decline in fertility in women of advanced reproductive age, with emerging evidence linking it to remodeling of the uterine microbiome, particularly a reduced Lactobacillus abundance. Here, using a cross-sectional human cohort with clinical follow-up, we identify an age-related shift in the endometrial microbiome, characterized by the loss of beneficial Lactobacillus-enriched states and increased Lactobacillus iners. This shift is associated with impaired endometrial receptivity and less favorable embryo transfer outcomes. Functional screening of reproduc

Oral probiotic activities and biosafety of Lactobacillus gasseri HHuMIN D.

BACKGROUND: Lactobacillus spp. have been researched worldwide and are used in probiotics, but due to difficulties with laboratory cultivation of and experimentation on oral microorganisms, there are few reports of Lactobacillus spp. being isolated from the oral cavity and tested against oral pathogens. This research sought to isolate and determine the safety and inhibitory capabilities of a Lactobacillus culture taken from the human body. RESULTS: One organism was isolated, named "L. gasseri HHuMIN D", and evaluated for safety. A 5% dilution of L. gasseri HHuMIN D culture supernatant exhibite

The Effect of Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 on Postmenopausal Symptoms in Ovariectomized Rats.

Clinical and preclinical studies have reported that Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17, a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from human breast milk, reduces body weight and white adipose tissue volume. In order to further explore the actions of L. gasseri BNR17, we investigated the anti-menopausal effects of L. gasseri BNR17 in an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model. The serum alanine aminotransferase levels of the rats in the OVX-BNR17 group were lower than those of the rats in the OVX-vehicle only (OVX-Veh) group. Upon administration of L. gasseri BNR17 after ovariectomy, calcitonin and Serotonin 2A le

Lactobacillus gasseri endocarditis on the aortic valve bioprosthesis - a case report.

UNLABELLED: Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic/ microaerophilic, rod-shaped bacteria. Lactobacilli constitute a significant component of the human microbiota in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract and female urogenital tract. They are also widely used as probiotics. Rarely, especially in patients with impaired immunity or with structural heart disease, do Lactobacilli become the pathogen responsible for serious infections, e.g. infective endocarditis (IE). CASE REPORT: The authors describe a case of an 80-year-old female with a past history of aortic valve re

Isolation and characterization of a new bacteriocin from Lactobacillus gasseri KT7.

A bacteriocin-producing Lactobacillus gasseri strain, KT7, was isolated from infant faeces. The supernatant fluid showed inhibitory activity not only against some lactic acid bacteria but also, against some pathogenic and food-spoilage species, including Clostridium, Listeria and Enterococcus. An antimicrobial peptide designated gassericin KT7 was isolated from Lactobacillus gasseri KT7. It was purified to homogeneity by a single four-step procedure: a crude supernatant fluid obtained from early stationary-phase culture in MRS medium was subjected to ammonium sulphate fractionation, CM-Sephade

Selective Inhibition of Neisseria gonorrhoeae by a Dithiazoline in Mixed Infections with Lactobacillus gasseri.

The Gram-negative human pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae has progressively developed resistance to antibiotic monotherapies, and recent failures of dual-drug therapy have heightened concerns that strains resistant to all available antibiotics will begin circulating globally. Targeting bacterial cell wall assembly has historically been effective at treating infections with N. gonorrhoeae, but as the effectiveness of β-lactams (including cephalosporins) is challenged by increasing resistance, research has expanded into compounds that target the numerous other enzymes with roles in peptidoglycan me

Targeted expression of anthrax protective antigen by Lactobacillus gasseri as an anthrax vaccine.

AIM: Induction of protective immunity against pathogenic microbes, including Bacillus anthracis, requires efficient vaccines that potentiate antibody avidity and increase T-cell longevity. We recently reported that the delivery of targeted B. anthracis protective antigen (PA) genetically fused to a DC-binding peptide (DCpep) by Lactobacillus acidophilus induced mucosal and systemic immunity against B. anthracis challenge in mice. MATERIALS & METHODS: Improvement of this oral vaccine strategy was attempted by use of the high copy and genetically stable q-replicating vector, pTRKH2, for express

Vaginal Lactobacillus gasseri biosurfactant: a novel bio- and eco-compatible anti-Candida agent.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC), caused by Candida spp. overgrowth, are common and challenging infections of the genital tract. Among Candida virulence factors, the ability to adhere to host epithelium and to form biofilms are frequently retrieved, especially in RVVC. Vaginal pathogen overgrowth is counteracted by resident lactobacilli, which exert a barrier thanks to the production of antimicrobial metabolites, such as biosurfactants (BS). BS was recovered from vaginal Lactobacillus gasseri BC12 and its chemical characteristics as well as its abili

Crystal structure of an efficacious gonococcal adherence inhibitor: an enolase from Lactobacillus gasseri.

Enolases are highly conserved metalloenzymes ubiquitous to cellular metabolism. While these enzymes share a large degree of sequence and structural similarity, they have been shown to possess a wide range of moonlighting functions. Recent studies showed that an enolase from Lactobacillus gasseri impedes the ability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to adhere to epithelial cells. We present the crystal structure of this enolase, the first from Lactobacillus, with one of its Mg(2+) cofactors. Determined using molecular replacement to 2.08Å, the structure has a flexible and surface exposed catalytic loop

Fermentation metabolites from Lactobacillus gasseri and Propionibacterium freudenreichii exert bacteriocidal effects in mice.

Lactobacillus gasseri OLL 2716 promotes the elimination of Helicobacter pylori and is utilized in yogurts that are specifically labeled as health foods. On the other hand, milk whey fermented by Propionibacterium freudenreichii ET-3, which increases the numbers of Bifidobacterium, is effective for intestinal disorders. We previously demonstrated that oral administration of L. gasseri and P. freudenreichii fermentation metabolites (LP-FM) improved calf intestinal microflora and reduced the incidence of diarrhea. However, the detailed immunological mechanisms responsible for these effects remain

Inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus gasseri CCFM1201 on Gardnerella vaginalis in mice with bacterial vaginosis.

Gardnerella vaginalis is the core pathogen of bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common vaginal infection in women. G. vaginalis exerts pathogenicity through various factors, such as biofilm formation and the local host immune response stimulation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus gasseri CCFM1201 on G. vaginalis using experimental BV models. We evaluated L. gasseri in vitro to inhibit pathogen biofilm formation and adhesion capacity in HeLa cells using crystal violet staining. Further in vivo studies were conducted to assess the inhibitory effects
