Antimicrobial susceptibility and genomic characterization of Lactococcus formosensis, Lactococcus garvieae, and Lactococcus petauri in Hong Kong.

UNLABELLED: Recent studies have shown that many isolates previously classified as Lactococcus garvieae were L. petauri and L. formosensis, complicating the understanding of the ecological niches, phylogeny, and phenotypic characteristics of these organisms. In this study, a total of 94 human feces and 166 food samples, collected from Hong Kong in 2021-2023, were cultured using selective media, with a positive rate of 21% for human feces, 37% for sashimi, 8% for cut fruits, and 8% for salad vegetables. The isolates (n = 67, including 43 from sashimi and four from ready-to-eat cut fruits and veg

[Serious infection with Lactococcus garvieae].

Lactococcus garvieae are Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe cocci. The bacterium is a known pathogen in fish, but is also described in mastitis among ruminants. In recent years it has been found in a Danish fish farm. Only 15 cases documenting infection in humans are found in English literature. We present an 83 year-old female in antihypertensive treatment admitted to hospital because of hypothermia and sepsis. In two of two blood cultures L. garvieae were found. No infection site was found. The patient received ampicillin and ciprofloxacin and was discharged to her home after 18 days.

Lactococcus garvieae endocarditis presenting with subdural haematoma.

BACKGROUND: Lactococcus garvieae is a rare cause of infective endocarditis (IE) in humans and the bacterium can easily be misidentified. Intracranial haemorrhage often occurs in conjunction with IE, but subdural haemorrhage (SDH) is very rarely encountered. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was an 81-year-old male with a history of cardiovascular disease and a prosthetic biologic aortic valve. He presented with fatigue and an acute onset of headache. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a left-sided fronto-temporal subdural haematoma. Low-grade fever was noted and blood cultures yielded growth of L

Lactococcus garvieae in Rural Alabama: A Case Report.

Lactococcus (L.) garvieae is a gram-positive coccus that has been found in various aquatic and terrestrial animals, as well as in dairy products, and is considered a potential zoonotic bacterium. The pathogen has been recognized as an emerging opportunistic human pathogen, often associated with the ingestion of raw seafood. The most common presentation of L. garvieae infection in humans is infective endocarditis, but it has also been found to have associations with other clinical manifestations. The following is a case report of a 6-year-old male with infected bilateral leg abrasions that occu

Inhibitory effect of Lactococcus lactis on the bioactivity of periodontopathogens.

Lactococcus lactis is a probiotic bacterium that produces various bacteriocins. Periodontopathogens induce inflammation and halitosis through the actions of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and trypsin-like enzymes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of L. lactis on the bioactivity of periodontopathogens. To investigate the antimicrobial peptide of L. lactis, the spent culture medium (SCM) of L. lactis was treated with or without proteinase K after collection by centrifugation, and the antibacterial activity of SCM against periodontopathogens was assessed. To evaluate

Multilocus Sequence Typing-Based Molecular Epidemiology of Lactococcus garvieae and Lactococcus formosensis in Japanese Amberjack, Greater Amberjack and Striped Jack Aquaculture.

Lactococcosis is a major bacterial disease that affects Japanese Seriola aquaculture; however, its molecular epidemiology remains poorly understood. This study characterized 62 Lactococcus isolates recovered from Japanese amberjack, greater amberjack and striped jack between 2016 and 2025 using multiplex polymerase chain reaction, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and erythromycin susceptibility testing. An epidemiological shift was observed from the dominant ST17-serotype I lineage (Lactococcus garvieae) to ST56- and ST115-serotype II lineages (Lactococcus formosensis), with the emergence of

Lactococcus lactis cholangitis and bacteremia identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry: A case report and review of the literature on Lactococcus lactis infection.

Lactococcus lactis is a rare causative organism in humans. Cases of L. lactis infection have only rarely been reported. However, because it is often difficult to identify by conventional commercially available methods, its incidence may be underestimated. We herein report the case of a 70-year-old man with cholangiocarcinoma who developed L. lactis cholangitis and review previously reported cases of L. lactis infection. Our case was confirmed by matrix-assisted desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). This case shows L. lactis is a potential causative pathogen of

Human Lactococcus garvieae Bloodstream Infection Complicated by Spondylodiscitis, Germany.

Lactococcus garvieae bloodstream infection in a woman in Germany resulted in spondylodiscitis and bioprosthetic mitral valve endocarditis. Six weeks of ceftriaxone followed by 10 days of doxycycline led to sustained clinical and microbiological resolution. This case highlights the need for thorough diagnostic testing and individualized, shared decision-making in infective endocarditis cases.

Lactococcus lactis thioredoxin reductase is sensitive to light inactivation.

Thioredoxin, involved in numerous redox pathways, is maintained in the dithiol state by the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-dependent flavoprotein thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Here, TrxR from Lactococcus lactis is compared with the well-characterized TrxR from Escherichia coli. The two enzymes belong to the same class of low-molecular weight thioredoxin reductases and display similar kcat values (∼25 s(-1)) with their cognate thioredoxin. Remarkably, however, the L. lactis enzyme is inactivated by visible light and furthermore reduces molecular oxygen 10 times faster than E. coli

Systematic identification of tRNAome and its dynamics in Lactococcus lactis.

Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) through their abundance and modification pattern significantly influence protein translation. Here, we present a systematic analysis of the tRNAome of Lactococcus lactis. Using the next-generation sequencing approach, we identified 40 tRNAs which carry 16 different post-transcriptional modifications as revealed by mass spectrometry analysis. While small modifications are located in the tRNA body, hypermodified nucleotides are mainly present in the anticodon loop, which through wobbling expand the decoding potential of the tRNAs. Using tRNA-based microarrays, we also deter

Stimulation of respiratory immunity by oral administration of Lactococcus lactis.

This work demonstrates that non-recombinant Lactococcus lactis NZ, administered by the oral route at the proper dose, is able to improve resistance against pneumococcal infection. Lactococcus lactis NZ oral administration was able to improve pathogen lung clearance, increased survival of infected mice, and reduced lung injuries. This effect was related to an upregulation of the respiratory innate and specific immune responses. Administration of L. lactis NZ improved production of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid TNF-alpha, enhanced recruitment of neutrophils into the alveolar spaces, and ind

Lactococcus garvieae Endocarditis on a Prosthetic Biological Aortic Valve.

Lactococcus garvieae (LG) endocarditis is a rare disease in humans. There are only about 16 reported cases in the world. We report a 76-year-old male patient with LG endocarditis. In depth interview with the patient revealed that 2 weeks prior to admission, he had eaten sushi containing raw fish. Unlike many of the other infections reported, which were on a native mitral valve, our patient's vegetation was on a prosthetic aortic valve.

Subdural empyema due to Lactococcus lactis cremoris: case report.

Lactococcus lactis cremoris (L. lactis cremoris) infections are very rare in humans. Only three case reports of brain abscess have been reported and the infectious routes and pathological features are still unknown. We experienced a subdural empyema due to L. lactis cremoris in an immunocompetent adult. A 33-year-old man was admitted with fever, right facial pain, left hemiparesis, and left hemianopsia. Computed tomography demonstrated low density fluid collection in the right falcotentorial subdural space. Magnetic resonance (MR) images revealed a high signal lesion on a diffusion-weighted im

Controlled production of stable heterologous proteins in Lactococcus lactis.

The use of Lactococcus lactis (the most extensively characterized lactic acid bacterium) as a delivery organism for heterologous proteins is, in some cases, limited by low production levels and poor-quality products due to surface proteolysis. In this study, we combined in one L. lactis strain use of the nisin-inducible promoter P(nisA) and inactivation of the extracellular housekeeping protease HtrA. The ability of the mutant strain, designated htrA-NZ9000, to produce high levels of stable proteins was confirmed by using the staphylococcal nuclease (Nuc) and the following four heterologous pr
