The anterior process of the malleus in extant Lagomorpha (Mammalia).

The anterior anchoring of the malleus of 30 extant species of Lagomorpha (rabbits, hares, pikas) has been studied on the basis of histological serial sections and µCT-scans. It is shown that former studies of Oryctolagus, Lepus, and Ochotona are incomplete, because the rostral part of the processus anterior of the malleus is always lacking due to damage of this extremely delicate structure. Our study shows that in perinatal stages of Leporidae the praearticulare develops a prominent processus internus that fits into a groove at the ventral side of the tegmen tympani; this "tongue and groove"-a

Comparative anatomy and systematic implications of the turbinal skeleton in Lagomorpha (Mammalia).

In order to elucidate the systematic relevance of the turbinal skeleton in Lagomorpha the ethmoidal regions of 6 ochotonid, 21 leporid, and 2 outgroup species (Sciurus vulgaris, Tupaia sp.) species were investigated by high-resolution computed tomography (μCT). Number and shape of turbinals correspond to major clades and to several genera. All Lagomorpha under study have a deeply excavated nasoturbinal that is continuous with the lamina semicircularis; a feature likely to be an autapomorphy of lagomorphs. In particular, the olfactory turbinals (frontoturbinals, ethmoturbinals, and interturbina

Role of Lagomorpha in the wild cycle of Rickettsia conorii in Salamanca (Spain).

In an endemic zone for Mediterranean spotted fever levels of antibodies to R. conorii were evaluated in serum samples from wild rabbits (Orytolagus cuniculus) and hares (Lepus granatensis) using an indirect microimmunofluorescence antibody test. The results of the study show that the wild rabbit may carry out in this area an important function in the maintenance of R. conorii in nature.

Variability and ultrastructural histochemical localization of sulphates in the salivary glands of rodents and Lagomorpha.

Stainings were effected on an ultrastructural histochemical level to localize sulphomucins in the submandibular and sublingual glands of growing mice and rabbits. Sulphates behave in an entirely different way in the salivary glands of Lagomorpha and in those of Rodents. In growing rabbits sulphates can be demonstrated in both glands; at maturity they can be demonstrated only in the sublingual gland and no longer in the submandibular gland. In the salivary glands of Rodents, sulphates cannot be demonstrated histochemically in new born subjects or in adults. The histochemical results are compare

Hypolagus brachygnathus (Lagomorpha, Leporidae) from the Lower Pleistocene of the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

Leporid fossils from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida karstic cave discovered in 2018 in central Crimea (Zuya village, Belogorsk district) are referred to Hypolagus brachygnathus (Kormos, 1930). This species is characteristic of the interval from the early Pleistocene (late Villanyian, MN17) to the middle Pleistocene (latest Biharian, Q2) of Europe. It has not been previously observed in Crimea.

Global prevalence of lagomorpha coccidiosis from 1951 to 2024: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The global prevalence of coccidia infection in lagomorphs and potential risk factors were investigated through a meta-analysis of 149 studies published between 1951 and 2024. The pooled prevalence of Eimeriidae, Sarcocystidae and Cryptosporidiidae was found to be 66.0 %, 8.0 % and 6.1 %, respectively. Rabbits and hares exhibited the highest prevalence of Eimeriidae at 63.1 % and 71.8 %, while pikas had the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae at 17.1 %. Countries located in the southern hemisphere exhibited the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae (11.4 %). The African Region had the hig

Does fast running limit numerical variability of the vertebral column in rabbits and hares (Leporidae: Lagomorpha)?

In mammalian vertebral columns, locomotive ability is expected to be an evolutionary driver of variation in the number of vertebrae; in species evolved to run fast or have a flexible vertebral column, they generally have limited numerical variation and low occurrence of malformed vertebrae to maintain their running performance. Although this hypothesis is supported among species sharing similar locomotive constraints (e.g. dorsomobile versus dorsostable species), whether it applies at the within-species level is unknown. We test this hypothesis using species of Leporidae (rabbits and hares) wi

Occurrence, Histopathological Findings, and Molecular Identification of Pathogenic Eimeria Infections in Rabbits (Mammalia: Lagomorpha) in Japan.

PURPOSE: Eimeria spp. are commonly found among rabbits (Mammalia: Lagomorpha) worldwide. Among the 11 Eimeria species, several are highly virulent, including E. intestinalis and E. flavescens, which cause intestinal coccidiosis, and E. stiedae, which causes hepatic coccidiosis. Unlike other countries, the occurrence of Eimeria infections in rabbits in Japan remains unknown, except for one reported case of natural infection. METHODS: We surveyed Eimeria infections in clinically affected rabbits over the past approximately 10 years at Livestock Hygiene Centers in 42 prefectures. A total of 16 t

Control of Tick Infestations in Oryctolagus cuniculus (Lagomorpha: Leporidae) With Spinosad Under Laboratory and Field Conditions.

Because of great economic loss in the world's livestock industry, and the serious risks to human health, the control of ticks and tick-borne diseases is one of the most important health management issues today. Current methodology involves integrated tick control for preventing the development of resistance. Rabbits are hosts for immature stages of the three-host tick Hyalomma lusitanicum Koch; so, we focus on this host as a strategy to interrupt the tick life cycle. Spinosad is an insecticide-acaricide, produced by the fermentation of metabolites of the actinomycete bacterium Saccharopolyspor

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha).

Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well-studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species-specific topology. Our study aims to provide a consolidated list and description of the vertebral muscles in wild rabbits. Wild European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) are also included in this study as they have a similar bauplan, albeit different locomotive b

How Far into Europe Did Pikas (Lagomorpha: Ochotonidae) Go during the Pleistocene? New Evidence from Central Iberia.

This paper reports the first find of pika remains in the Iberian Peninsula, at a site in central Spain. A fragmented mandible of Ochotona cf. pusilla was unearthed from Layer 3 (deposited some 63.4±5.5 ka ago as determined by thermoluminescence) of the Buena Pinta Cave. This record establishes new limits for the genus geographic distribution during the Pleistocene, shifting the previous edge of its known range southwest by some 500 km. It also supports the idea that, even though Europe's alpine mountain ranges represented a barrier that prevented the dispersal into the south to this and other

A new view of an old enigma: Reassessing Gymnesicolagus gelaberti (Lagomorpha) from the Middle Miocene of Mallorca (Balearic Islands).

Over 40 years ago, a peculiar fossil lagomorph was described from the Middle Miocene of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Gymnesicolagus gelaberti possesses enormous teeth with striking morphological features, making its systematic placement enigmatic. Here we revise the holotype and the currently available type material, and we describe additional, previously unreported specimens. Alongside classical comparative approaches, we performed micro-CT-based 3D reconstructions of selected specimens to investigate internal dental features relevant for taxonomic purposes. Several of the peculiar den

Comparative study of erythrocyte glycolytic enzymes in man and in two species of Lagomorphae. (Ochotona rufescens rufescens and Oryctolagus cuniculus).

The authors made a comparative study of red cell enzyme glycolysis in man and in two species of Lagomorphae, the pika and the rabbit. The activities of the 12 enzymes of Embden-Meyerhoff pathway and of the two dehydrogenases of pentose shunt (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) were determined. Phosphoglycerate kinase and pyruvate kinase showed quite similar activities in pika erythrocytes and in erythrocytes from human umbilical cord. The levels of these enzymes differed significantly in the pika and in the rabbit. No differences were noted between pyruvate

Control of Hyalomma lusitanicum (Acari: Ixodidade) Ticks Infesting Oryctolagus cuniculus (Lagomorpha: Leporidae) Using the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana (Hyocreales: Clavicipitaceae) in Field Conditions.

Entomopathogenic fungi are widely used to control arthropods not just in agricultural settings but also in Veterinary Medicine and Public Health. These products have been employed to control tick populations and tick-borne diseases. The effectiveness of these control measures not only depends on the fungi, but also on the tick species and environmental conditions. In Mesomediterranean areas, tick species are adapted to extreme climatic conditions and it is therefore especially important to develop suitable tick control strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a ne

Comparative morphology of premolar foramen in lagomorphs (Mammalia: Glires) and its functional and phylogenetic implications.

Lagomorphs (a group that consists of pikas, hares, rabbits and allies) are notable for their conservative morphology retained for most of their over 50 million years evolutionary history. On the other hand, their remarkable morphological uniformity partly stems from a considerable number of homoplasies in cranial and dental structures that hamper phylogenetic analyses. The premolar foramen, an opening in the palate of lagomorphs, has been characterized as an important synapomorphy of one clade, Ochotonidae (pikas). Within Lagomorpha, however, its phylogenetic distribution is much wider, the fo

Role of small mammals in the persistence of Louping-ill virus: field survey and tick co-feeding studies.

Louping-ill (LI) is a tick-borne viral disease of red grouse, Lagopus lagopus scoticus Lath. (Tetraonidae: Galliformes), and sheep, Ovis aries L. (Bovidae: Artiodactyla), that causes economic loss to upland farms and sporting estates. Unvaccinated sheep, grouse and mountain hares, Lepus timidus L. (Leporidae: Lagomorpha), are known to transmit LI virus, whereas red deer, Cenrus elaphus L. (Cervidae: Artiodactyla), and rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus L. (Leporidae: Lagomorpha), do not. However, the role of small mammals is unknown. Here, we determine the role of small mammals, in particular fiel

The report describes a case of urogenital myiasis in a domestic rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus L. (Lagomorpha: Leporidae) caused by Lucilia sericata (Meigen; Diptera: Calliphoridae) in region Emilia-Romagna (Northern Italy). The case, occurring in June 2018, is the first one involving L. sericata as an agent of myiasis in a domestic rabbit in Italy. Species identification was based on morphological investigations of males through identification keys. The rabbit developed the urogenital myiasis as a consequence of chronic enteritis causing an accumulation of faeces in the perianal and perineal re
