Lamiaceae in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is common in the presence of other significantly narrowed coronary arteries. The impact of total occlusion and its association with completeness of revascularization on patients with multivessel disease undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) remains largely unknown. AIM: The aim of our study was to compare CABG operation characteristics, as well as 30-day mortality, incidence of post-operative major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) between patients with and without CTO in right coronary artery (RCA). MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Essential Oils of Lamiaceae Family Plants as Antifungals.

The incidence of fungal infections has been steadily increasing in recent years. Systemic mycoses are characterized by the highest mortality. At the same time, the frequency of infections caused by drug-resistant strains and new pathogens e.g., Candida auris increases. An alternative to medicines may be essential oils, which can have a broad antimicrobial spectrum. Rich in the essential oils are plants from the Lamiaceae family. In this review are presented antifungal activities of essential oils from 72 Lamiaceae plants. More than half of these have good activity (minimum inhibitory concentra

Schnabeliajiuzhaigouensis (Lamiaceae, Ajugoideae), a new species from Sichuan, China.

Schnabeliajiuzhaigouensis C. Liu, F. Zhao & C.L. Xiang, a new species from north-eastern Sichuan, China, is described, based on both morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence. Morphologically, the new species is mostly similar to S.terniflora, but can be readily distinguished by its habit, ovate to lanceolate-ovate leaf blades, the presence of 5-8 lateral veins on each side of the mid-rib and distinct characteristics of the floral structure, including oblong upper lip and lateral lobes of the lower lip, with the middle lobe being cuneate. In addition, the nutlets are puberulent and lac

Nomenclatural notes on Menthinae (Mentheae - Lamiaceae) native to Brazil.

In this article, we present two independent arguments in favor of the view that parents have a pro tanto moral duty to feed their children a predominantly plant-based diet. The first is the 'Animal Harm Argument'. The significant suffering caused to animals by harmful animal agriculture is morally wrong, and consequently there is a moral duty to avoid consuming products coming from such circumstances. In a family context, parents have a moral duty to teach their young children the best 'rules-of-thumb' to comply with morality's demands. Therefore, parents should, as a rule, provide their child

Essential Oils of Seven Lamiaceae Plants and Their Antioxidant Capacity.

Oxidative stress has been reported as a cause of many diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Oxidative stress can also lead to cancer formation by promoting tumor development and progression. Antioxidants derived from Lamiaceae plants play an important role in natural medicine, pharmacology, cosmetology, and aromatherapy. Herein, we examine the antioxidative capacity of essential oils from seven aromatic Lamiaceae plants against the synthetic radicals DPPH and ABTS. Among the essential oils analyzed, the most robust scavenging capacities were found in mix

Two novel tribes of Lamiaceae supported by phylogenomics and morphology.

Plastome-based classifications recognize 12 subfamilies and 22 tribes within Lamiaceae. However, the deep phylogenetic relationships and tribal limits of Pogostemoneae sensu lato remain uncertain because nuclear phylogenomic investigations and assessments of cytonuclear discordance remain limited. We sampled all genera assigned to Pogostemoneae s.lat. and representatives of all recognized tribes of Lamiaceae. Transcriptome-based nuclear datasets and plastid datasets recover Lamioideae as monophyletic but Pogostemoneae s.lat. as non-monophyletic. Nuclear concatenation and coalescent analyses re

Molecular phylogeny and taxonomic notes on Premna (Lamiaceae) in Thailand.

The genus Premna, one of the largest woody genera of Lamiaceae, comprises approximately 130 species distributed across the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. Previous classification and identification of the genus has mainly relied on morphological studies, resulting in significant taxonomic ambiguity and misidentification. In Thailand, over 20 Premna species have been recorded but their phylogenetic relationships have never been well investigated, particularly within the P. serratifolia complex which is the most taxonomically complicated species with the most extensive synonymy within t

Modulatory Impact of Lamiaceae Metabolites on Apoptosis of Human Leukemia Cells.

Lamiaceae species are rich sources of biologically active compounds which have been applied in medicine since ancient times. Especially their antineoplastic properties have been thoroughly studied with respect to their putative application in chemoprevention and adjuvant therapy of cancer. However, the most known biological effects of Lamiaceae have been ascribed to their essential oil fractions, whereas their (poly)phenolic metabolites being also abundant in these plants, are much less recognized, nevertheless contributing to their beneficial properties, such as anti-cancer actions. The aim o
