Distribution, biosynthesis, and synthetic biology of phenylethanoid glycosides in the order Lamiales.

Phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs), with a C6-C2 glucoside unit as the basic skeleton, are specialized (secondary) metabolites found in several medicinal plants. As PhGs exhibit various pharmacological activities, they are expected to be used as lead compounds in drug discovery. However, mass-production systems have not yet been established even for acteoside, a typical PhG that is widely distributed in nature (more than 150 species). This review focuses on recent studies on the accumulation and distribution of PhGs in plants, biosynthetic pathways of PhGs, and the bioproduction of PhGs.

Exploring the multigenerational effects of Lippia adoensis (Lamiales: Verbenaceae) essential oil and Dichlorvos on Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) life-history traits and gene expression.

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), is a major stored-product pest. Resistance to synthetic insecticides such as dichlorvos (DDVP) has prompted interest in alternatives with distinct modes of action. This study compared multigenerational transcriptional responses of C. maculatus to DDVP and the botanical insecticide Lippia adoensis (Hochst. ex Walp.) (Lamiales: Verbenaceae) essential oil (EO). DDVP exposure was associated with progressive fitness recovery across generations, together with upregulated expression of detoxification-related genes (e.g.

Shrubs and trees as natural insect protection for grazing animals in Switzerland and the alpine region: A systematic review of in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials.

Insect infestation in grazing animals is an increasing problem due to factors such as global warming and increasing resistance to insecticides, which have a direct impact on animal health and welfare. According to reports from farmers, observations in zoopharmacognosy and the ingredients of commercial insecticides, various indigenous trees and shrubs with an insecticidal or repellent effect grow or can be planted on pastures. The aim of our systematic review (designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement) was to identify perenni

Diel net CO2 exchange of carnivorous Pinguicula is consistent with low-level CAM photosynthesis.

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis is a water-conserving pathway of photosynthesis that typically occurs in leaf- or stem-succulent plants of warm, water-limited habitats. Key features of CAM photosynthesis are nocturnal CO2 uptake and nocturnal increases in tissue acidity. CAM photosynthesis was recently reported in water-deficit stressed carnivorous plants of the genus Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae). The report is remarkable because CAM has neither been documented in the Lentibulariaceae nor in a carnivorous species before. Furthermore, Pinguicula plants are vastly different in

Potential therapeutic activity of Phlogacanthus thyrsiformis Hardow (Mabb) flower extract and its biofabricated silver nanoparticles against chemically induced urolithiasis in male Wistar rats.

Urolithiasis is a painful disorder in which stones are formed in the kidney, bladder or urethra. There are no proper therapeutic treatments available for kidney stones and people suffering from larger stones have to undergo surgery which has many side effects. A natural remedy with therapeutic effects that can dissipate and remove even the larger stones would eliminate the need of a surgery and the risks associated with it. The flowers of Phlogacanthus thyrsiformis used in culinary recipes in the north eastern India are also widely used as a folklore medicine for the treatment of kidney stones

Ecological and Biological Properties of Satureja cuneifolia Ten. and Thymus spinulosus Ten.: Two Wild Officinal Species of Conservation Concern in Apulia (Italy). A Preliminary Survey.

This study evaluated the effects of ecology (plant community, topography and pedology), as well as of climate, on the composition of essential oils (EOs) from two officinal wild plant species (Lamiales) from Apulia, namely Satureja cuneifolia Ten. and Thymus spinulosus Ten. Few scientific data on their chemical composition are available, due to the fact that the first has a limited distribution range and the second is endemic of southern Italy. Results for both species, never officially used in traditional medicine and/or as spices, showed that the ecological context (from a phytosociological

Comparative genome/transcriptome analysis probes Boraginales' phylogenetic position, WGDs in Boraginales, and key enzyme genes in the alkannin/shikonin core pathway.

Boraginales (the forget-me-not order) is a core group within the lamiids clade. However, until now, no genome from Boraginales has been reported, and published transcriptomes are also rare. Here, we report the first Boraginales species de novo genome (i.e. Echium plantagineum genome) and seven other Boraginales species transcriptomes to probe three issues: (i) Boraginales' phylogenetic position within the lamiids clade; (ii) potential whole genome duplications (WGDs) in Boraginales; and (iii) candidate key enzyme genes in the alkannin/shikonin core pathway. The results showed that: (i) Boragin

Potential use of the bushmint, Hyptis suaveolens, for the control of infestation by the pink stalk borer, Sesamia calamistis on maize in southern Benin, West Africa.

Maize production in Benin, especially in resource-poor farmers' fields, is constrained by stemborers among other factors. One of the major stemborers in southern Benin is Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). African farmers cannot afford to use commercial insecticides for controlling stemborers - they are expensive and unsuitable for durable pest management systems due to eco-toxicity. There is therefore a need for cheaper and environmentally friendly methods and botanicals offer an attractive alternative. The bushmint, Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae), was co
