Genes, language development, and language disorders.

Genetic factors are important contributors to language and learning disorders, and discovery of the underlying genes can help delineate the basic neurological pathways that are involved. This information, in turn, can help define disorders and their perceptual and processing deficits. Initial molecular genetic studies of dyslexia, for example, appear to converge on defects in neuronal and axonal migration. Further study of individuals with abnormalities of these genes may lead to the recognition of characteristic cognitive deficits attributable to the neurological dysfunction. Such abnormaliti

[Speech and language development disorders in children].

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, disturbances in the acquirement of language skills are not infrequently overlooked or are recognized too late, in particular when the problem is speech understanding, or when behavioral disturbances predominate. Diagnostic guidelines differentiate between circumscribed articulation disorders and expressive and receptive speech problems. The diagnostic work-up must take account of the changes in symptoms occurring during the course of the child's development. Mental comorbidity may be observed in every second speech-disordered child. [Value of the Heidelberg Language Development Test in diagnosis of children with language development disorders].

Diagnosis of developmental speech and language disorders in accordance with the ICD-10 is to be based on the psychometric assessment of speech and language performance. In the present study the clinical validity of the Heidelberger Sprachentwicklungstest (HSET) for diagnosing expressive language disorders was assessed by comparing HSET subtest results for 92 children aged 4 to 10 years who had various speech and language disorders with the children's scores on another language test, a cognitive test and clinical findings. The HSET scores differed considerably from the clinical ratings of the s

Language phenotypes in children with autism spectrum disorder, expressive language disorder, and typical language development.

The aim of this study was to compare language abilities in 4-6-year-old Georgian-speaking children with typical language development (TLD), expressive language disorder (ELD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Language linguistic components, such as phonology, semantics, syntax, morphology, and pragmatics, were examined along with verbal behavior types like "mand," "tact," "echoic," and "intraverbal." Our sample comprised 148 children, with a gender distribution of 50 girls and 98 boys. Significant differences were observed in the application of various parts of speech across the three group

[Language development disorders--studies of preschool children of the Leipzig special language school].

Children with severe speech disorders were examined to determine the causes of their abnormal speech development. Thirty-seven preschool and school-age children were followed up and results compared. All children had low intelligence quotients, with most of the children coming from low social backgrounds. However, both of these factors (intelligence and low social background) had no influence on the improvement of speech levels after therapy. Two-thirds of the children with moderate conductive hearing losses showed improvement after therapy, so that the effect of this hearing loss was believed

Mothers' estimates of their children with disorders of language development.

The authors' objective in this article was to explore the accuracy of mothers' estimates concerning their children's developmental functioning, especially with respect to vocabulary and gross motor development, by comparing the results of diagnostic tests administered to both the children and their mothers. The authors studied 55 children with disorders of language development (LD) between the ages of 3 and 6 years using several diagnostic scales concerning child development. The authors assessed the mothers' estimates regarding vocabulary and gross motor development by the same scales as thos

Disorders of language development, with particular reference to central deafness.

Many disorders may result in delay of language development. There is on the one hand a large group of children with bilateral peripheral deafness, most of whom will be amenable to appropriate treatment, and on the other a group, possibly more numerous, who have a variety of disorders of speech and language, varying from lack of speech associated with severe mental retardation to more specific defects, such as congenital dyslexia and developmental articulatory dyspraxia. These disorders are probably due to a defect of cerebral function at the highest level and in these children no-one will have

The effects of heritage multilingualism on foreign language learning: a comparison of children with typical language development and developmental language disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Both multilingualism and developmental language disorder (DLD) may be associated with inferior performance in the majority language, albeit for different reasons. At the same time, there is a growing body of evidence that multilingualism may have a positive effect on foreign language performance. This study tests the hypothesis that the positive effects of multilingualism on foreign language learning may be smaller in children with DLD compared to their multilingual peers with typical language development. METHODS: In a 2 × 2 design, we compare the effects of multilingualism and

Verbal problem-solving difficulties in autism spectrum disorders and atypical language development.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) adopt less efficient strategies than typically developing (TD) peers on the Twenty Questions Task (TQT), a measure of verbal problem-solving skills. Although problems with the TQT are typically associated with executive dysfunction, they have also been reported in children who are deaf, suggesting a role for atypical language development. To test the contribution of language history to ASD problem solving, TQT performance was compared in children with high-functioning autism (HFA), children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and TD children. The HFA grou

Defining spoken language benchmarks and selecting measures of expressive language development for young children with autism spectrum disorders.

PURPOSE: The aims of this article are twofold: (a) to offer a set of recommended measures that can be used for evaluating the efficacy of interventions that target spoken language acquisition as part of treatment research studies or for use in applied settings and (b) to propose and define a common terminology for describing levels of spoken language ability in the expressive modality and to set benchmarks for determining a child's language level in order to establish a framework for comparing outcomes across intervention studies. Childhood autism: deficits of communication and symbolic development. I. Distinctions from language disorders.

The present paper reviews, outlines, and explores the literature concerned with the speech-language disorder of childhood autism. The problems of communication of the autistic child are compared and contrasted with those of children with a variety of other language disorders (e.g. receptive developmental dysphasia). Based upon the review of normal preverbal communicatory and symbolic development, it is concluded that childhood autism involves a pervasive language disorder encompassing communication in general, as well as certain symbolic-representational abilities necessary for language. Using Motor Tempi to Understand Rhythm and Grammatical Skills in Developmental Language Disorder and Typical Language Development.

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) show relative weaknesses on rhythm tasks beyond their characteristic linguistic impairments. The current study compares preferred tempo and the width of an entrainment region for 5- to 7-year-old typically developing (TD) children and children with DLD and considers the associations with rhythm aptitude and expressive grammar skills in the two populations. Preferred tempo was measured with a spontaneous motor tempo task (tapping tempo at a comfortable speed), and the width (range) of an entrainment region was measured by the difference betwee

Preschool Language Development of Children Born to Women with an Opioid Use Disorder.

Increasing evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to opioids may affect brain development, but limited data exist on the effects of opioid-exposure on preschool language development. Our study aimed to characterize the nature and prevalence of language problems in children prenatally exposed to opioids, and the factors that support or hinder language acquisition. A sample of 100 children born to pregnant women in methadone maintenance treatment and 110 randomly identified non-exposed children were studied from birth to age 4.5 years. At 4.5 years, 89 opioid-exposed and 103 non-exposed childr

Modelling gesture use and early language development in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Nonverbal communication abilities, including gesture use, are impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about how common gestures may influence or be influenced by other areas of development. AIMS: To examine the relationships between gesture, fine motor and language in young children with ASD compared with a comparison group using multiple measures and methods in a structural equation modelling framework. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Participants included 110 children with ASD and a non-ASD comparison group of 87 children (that included children with developm

The impact of bilingual environments on language development in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The impact of bilingual exposure on language learning has not been systematically studied in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This study compared the social abilities and language levels of children (mean age = 56 months) with ASDs from bilingual (n = 45) and monolingual (n = 30) environments. Bilingually-exposed children were subgrouped based on simultaneous bilingual exposure from infancy (SIM, n = 24) versus sequential post-infancy bilingual exposure (SEQ, n = 21). Despite significantly different amounts of bilingual exposure across all groups (p = <0.001) and significantly stronger

Study of child language development and disorders in Iran: A systematic review of the literature.

Child language development and disorder in Iran has been the focus for research by different professions, the most prominent ones among them being psychologists and speech therapists. Epidemiological studies indicate that between 8% and 12% of children show noticeable signs of language impairment in the preschool years; however, research on child language in Iran is not extensive compared to studies in English speaking countries, which are currently the basis of clinical decision-making in Iran. Consequently, there is no information about the prevalence of child language disorders in Iranian p
