Genes, language development, and language disorders.

Genetic factors are important contributors to language and learning disorders, and discovery of the underlying genes can help delineate the basic neurological pathways that are involved. This information, in turn, can help define disorders and their perceptual and processing deficits. Initial molecular genetic studies of dyslexia, for example, appear to converge on defects in neuronal and axonal migration. Further study of individuals with abnormalities of these genes may lead to the recognition of characteristic cognitive deficits attributable to the neurological dysfunction. Such abnormaliti

Language and language disorders: neuroscience to clinical practice.

Language disorders are common in neurological practice but their accurate recognition and description can be challenging. In this review, we summarise the major landmarks in the understanding of language disorders and the organisation of language in the brain. We describe approaches to assessing language disorders at the bedside or in the clinic as well as the treatment and rehabilitation of aphasia. Finally, we describe how the field of neuroscience is providing new computational and neuroscientific approaches to study the mechanisms of recovery and rehabilitation of aphasia.

Post-stroke language disorders.

Post-stroke language disorders are frequent and include aphasia, alexia, agraphia and acalculia. There are different definitions of aphasias, but the most widely accepted neurologic and/or neuropsychological definition is that aphasia is a loss or impairment of verbal communication, which occurs as a consequence of brain dysfunction. It manifests as impairment of almost all verbal abilities, e.g., abnormal verbal expression, difficulties in understanding spoken or written language, repetition, naming, reading and writing. During the history, many classifications of aphasia syndromes were estab

[Language in autistic disorders].

Autism is a developmental disorder affecting social relationships, communication and flexibility of thought. These three basic aspects of autism may present in many different forms and degrees. Therefore autism should be considered to be a spectrum of autistic disorders rather than a single strictly defined condition. The spectrum of autistic disorders extends from intelligent individuals with acceptable social integration, to severely retarded patients with scarcely any social interaction. Language is almost always affected either in its formal aspects or in its usage. Autistic linguistic dis

Understanding childhood language disorders.

Developmental language disorders exist in 5% to 10% of preschoolers and have strong genetic implications. There are several variants of dysphasia: mixed receptive/expressive, expressive, or higher order language processing. Preschool children with pervasive developmental disorders are dysphasic as well as autistic. Some undergo a language and behavioral regression, most often as toddlers. The role of subclinical epilepsy in this regression is unknown because it is often ignored. Most dysphasic children speak by schoolage but are at substantial risk for reading/academic difficulty. Language phenotypes in children with autism spectrum disorder, expressive language disorder, and typical language development.

The aim of this study was to compare language abilities in 4-6-year-old Georgian-speaking children with typical language development (TLD), expressive language disorder (ELD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Language linguistic components, such as phonology, semantics, syntax, morphology, and pragmatics, were examined along with verbal behavior types like "mand," "tact," "echoic," and "intraverbal." Our sample comprised 148 children, with a gender distribution of 50 girls and 98 boys. Significant differences were observed in the application of various parts of speech across the three group

[Language disorders. Diagnosis and treatment].

AIMS: The study reviews language disorders in children. Taking their normal development as the starting point, the work puts forward a differential diagnosis based on the symptoms presented in the moment the patient visited the physician. It also suggests an approach for children with language disorders from the neuropaediatric point of view while also updating the management of some of its forms. DEVELOPMENT: The acquisition of language is one of the key milestones in the development of children. A child's social and intellectual development is affected by delayed acquisition of language and

[Early diagnosis of language disorders].

Talking is normal and not talking is not. In case of developmental language delay, "wait and see" is not a good medical practice. In many cases, this delay is secondary to conditions such as hearing loss, mental retardation, brain damage, pervasive developmental disorder, environmental deprivation... In other cases, it is a specific language delay or a specific language disorder (dysphasia). Specific speech assessment and speech therapy are indicated to prevent behavioural problems, and learning disabilities.

Genetics in disorders of language.

As is typical in science, early work in an area is bound to have weaknesses. Therefore, it is not unexpected that the extent to which conclusions can be drawn from the current research on the genetics of DLD is limited. These limitations stem from the use of heterogeneous samples, the use of overly broad phenotypes, survey rather than objective test data, and only a few studies looking beyond simple familiarity. Future research is in progress that attempts to correct for these weaknesses. Still, some practically useful information can be gleaned from the work done thus far. First, we can now h

Language disorders: autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

This article summarizes current knowledge about language and communication impairments in children who have autism spectrum disorders. It reviews the language profiles that may be observed during the toddler and preschool years and in school-aged children and discusses receptive and expressive language skills that may be quite variable across the spectrum and the universal impairments in pragmatic aspects of language that are among the defining characteristics of the disorder. It concludes with clinical recommendations for pediatric screening of autism spectrum disorders and for continued moni

Why Sign Language Research Is Essential for Understanding Language and Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Sign language research has often been framed as supplementary to spoken language studies. In this article, I argue that sign language research is not only equal in value but also essential to understanding the human language faculty and its disorders. METHOD: I present three arguments: that sign language reveals phenomena unobservable in speech, enables the testing of otherwise untestable hypotheses, and helps disentangle speech from language. RESULTS: Drawing on research with deaf children with autism and other language disorders, I demonstrate how signed languages can transform bo

Regression of language and non-language skills in pervasive developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: As part of the pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), there is a subgroup of individuals reported to have a different onset of symptom appearance consisting of an apparently normal early development, followed by a loss of verbal and/or non-verbal skills prior to 2 years of age. This study aims at comparing the symptomatology of children who displayed a regression and often an associated intellectual disability through investigation of two types of loss, namely language and other skill regression. METHODS: This study examined the occurrence of regression in 135 children with PDD,

Relationship between language and fluency in children with developmental language disorders.

The present investigation addresses two primary hypotheses: (a) that a subset of children with developmental language disorders exhibits significantly more disfluencies than other children with language disorders and (b) that differences between the disfluent and nondisfluent groups observed in fluency may be related to differences in language deficits. Spontaneous language samples from 60 preschool children with developmental language disorders were analyzed for frequency and type of disfluencies. Comparisons of the frequency of disfluencies across subjects revealed that a subset of 10 subjec

Developmental language disorder - heritability and genetic correlations with other disorders affecting language.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting language in the absence of a known biomedical condition, which may have a large impact on a person's life and mental health. Family-based studies indicate a strong genetic component in DLD, but genetic studies of DLD are scarce. In this study we estimated the heritability of DLD and its genetic correlations with related disorders and traits in sample of >25,000 individuals from the Danish Blood Donor Study for whom we had both genotype data and questionnaire data on language disorder and language support

Genetics of speech and language disorders.

Vocal communication mediated by speech and language is a uniquely human trait, and has served an important evolutionary role in the development of our species. Deficits in speech and language functions can be of numerous types, including aphasia, stuttering, articulation disorders, verbal dyspraxia, and specific language impairment; language deficits are also related to dyslexia. Most communication disorders are prominent in children, where they are common. A number of these disorders have been shown to cluster in families, suggesting that genetic factors are involved, but their etiology at th
