Larrea tridentata and its Biological Activities.

BACKGROUND: Larrea tridentata is a dominant shrub in the deserts of North America and is recognized for its various traditional uses. More than 50 traditional uses have been recorded. Regarding its chemical composition, the products of the mevalonate, shikimate, and malonate pathways are predominant. L. tridentata has nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), one of its most studied secondary metabolites that exhibited remarkable different biological activities: sequestration of reactive oxygen species, inhibition of lipoxygenases (LOX) and activation of the endogenous antioxidant response mediated by

Contact dermatitis from Larrea (creosote bush).

Six men suffering from acute dermatitis had positive patch tests to Larrea (creosote bush). The lesions preferentially involved sun-exposed sites, simulating a photodermatitis, but also were on the legs and scrotum. Our findings were more consistent with contact allergy than with a primary irritant or a phototoxic response. The patch tests were also positive to Zuccagnia punctata. In two cases the exposure to the creosote bush occurred as a result of casual occupations, in two because of household remedies (moist compresses and baths), and in the other two as a result of burning the bush and r

Phytochemical Compounds and Pharmacological Properties of Larrea tridentata.

For centuries, traditional medicine from plants (phytotherapy) was the only treatment for infectious and non-infectious diseases. Although it is still practiced in several countries with excellent therapeutic results, it is frequently underestimated because, unlike Western medicine, it is not based on an empirical scientific foundation. However, interest in the search for plant-based therapeutic resources has been stimulated by disciplines such as phytochemistry and the side effects of conventional pharmacological therapies. For example, Larrea tridentata is a perennial shrub used in tradition

Characterization of the antibacterial activity from ethanolic extracts of the botanical, Larrea tridentata.

BACKGROUND: β-lactam antibiotics are a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics consisting of all antibiotic agents that contain a β-lactam ring in their molecular structures. β-lactam antibiotics are only known to be isolated from fungi (e.g. Acremonium chrysogenum, Penicillium chrysogenum and Aspergillus nidulans) and bacteria (e.g. Streptomyces clavuligerus). We have shown that botanical extracts prepared from Larrea tridentata have strong antimicrobial activity against several bacteria, including members of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus genera. METHODS: Through resistance studies, inhibitor

Physicochemical Characterization and Solar-Driven Chromophore Removal of Hydroalcoholic Larrea tridentata Extracts in Aqueous Media.

Although plant-derived bioactive compounds are promising sustainable alternatives to synthetic herbicides, their environmental fate and transformation behavior remain poorly understood. This study evaluates the physicochemical stability and solar-driven transformation of phenolic and other complex phytochemical constituents in Larrea tridentata hydroalcoholic extracts (AELT) in aqueous media. Spectroscopic and thermal characterization (TGA/DTG, FTIR, 1H/13C NMR, and GC-MS) revealed a chemically complex phytochemical matrix containing aromatic, phenolic, terpenoid, fatty-acid-derived and other

Larrea divaricata Cav (Jarilla): production of superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and expression of zymosan receptors.

Larrea divaricata is a plant widely used in folk medicine in Argentina. This work aimed to study the mechanisms of decoction activity on the release of oxygen reactive species. Decoction increased the binding of zymosan-FITC and superoxide production. Cadmium decreased the superoxide production as well as malonate and barbital. Decoction decreased the release of hydrogen peroxide. Decoction increased the reduction of MTT but not when malonate and barbital were included. Together, decoction increased the expression of dectin-1 leading to increased superoxide production. It is possible that deco

Effect of Larrea divaricata Cav. extract and nordihydroguaiaretic acid upon peroxidase secretion in rat submandibulary glands.

Free radicals are involved in several diseases, including cancer, central nervous system alterations and inflammatory pathologies. Peroxidase is an oral enzyme implicated in the defence of oral cavity. It has been determined that flavonoids and lignans possess antioxidant and free radical scavenging either directly or indirectly, usually by means of increasing the secretion of free radicals scavenger enzymes. Larrea divaricata Cav. is a plant used in folk Argentine medicine for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory ailments. In this study, we have determined the effect and mechanism of acti

Larrea tridentata: A novel source for anti-parasitic agents active against Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Naegleria fowleri.

Protozoan parasites infect and kill millions of people worldwide every year, particularly in developing countries where access to clean fresh water is limited. Among the most common are intestinal parasites, including Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica. These parasites wreak havoc on the epithelium lining the small intestines (G. lamblia) and colon (E. histolytica) causing giardiasis and amebiasis, respectively. In addition, there are less common but far more deadly pathogens such as Naegleria fowleri that thrive in warm waters and infect the central nervous systems of their victims via

[Biliary calculi in the golden hamster. XXXVII. The prophylactic action of the creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) in pigmented cholelithiasis produced by vitamin A].

In the present work the results of an experiment performed in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), strain ChCM, are presented, in which the possible preventive action of pigment cholelithiasis by a powdered, desiccated, hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of "gobernadora" (Larrea tridentata) was studied. The extract was added to the lithogenic diet (basic diet + 25,000 I.U. of Vitamin A) at the 4% level; the hamsters were fed with the experimental diets during 70 days. The results showed that the group which received the diet with "gobernadora" did not develop pigment cholelithiasis, wherea

Larrea divaricata Cav. aqueous extract and nordihydroguariaretic acid modulate oxidative stress in submandibular glands of diabetic rats: a buccal protective in diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and endogenous antioxidants. The aetiology and pathogenesis of several oral diseases are attributed to this process. The antioxidant enzymes secreted in the saliva by submandibular glands maintain oral health through the scavenging of ROS. The objective of this work was to study the capacity of an aqueous extract of L. divaricata (AE), and its majority compound, nordihydroguariaretic acid (NDGA), to modulate the pro-oxidant/antioxidant status in submandibular glands

Cytoprotective effects of creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) and Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) extracts against toxicity induced by venom of the black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus ornatus).

The venom of Crotalus ornatus (vCo) poses a threat to human health, as it contains a mixture of toxins that can cause cytotoxic, necrotic, and hemolytic effects. The present study assessed methanolic and acetone extracts from leaves and flowers of Larrea tridentata, as well as the bark of Quercus virginiana as potential suppressors of the toxic effects of vCo in vitro. The content of total phenols, flavonoids, and tannins of the plant extracts were quantified for the suppression of vCo cytotoxicity in two cell culture models, human lymphocytes and porcine aortic endothelial (PAE) cells. A pinoresinol-lariciresinol reductase homologue from the creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) catalyzes the efficient in vitro conversion of p-coumaryl/coniferyl alcohol esters into the allylphenols chavicol/eugenol, but not the propenylphenols p-anol/isoeugenol.

The creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) accumulates a complex mixture of 8-8' regiospecifically linked lignans, of which the potent antioxidant nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) is the most abundant. Its tetra-O-methyl derivative (M4N) is showing considerable promise in the treatment of refractory (hard-to-treat) brain and central nervous system tumors. NDGA and related 9,9'-deoxygenated lignans are thought to be formed by dimerization of allyl/propenyl phenols, phenylpropanoid compounds that lack C-9 oxygenation, thus differentiating them from the more common monolignol-derived lignans. NADES-mediated folk plant extracts as novel antifungal agents against Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast commonly found in mouth, gastrointestinal tract and vagina. Under certain conditions, it causes skin, mucosal and systemic infections. With growing concern over the emergence of resistant strains to conventional antifungals, the development of novel antifungal agents for the management of this pathogen is an urgent need. In the present work, novel bioextracts from folk medicinal plants were directly used as active ingredient in a topical formulation for dermal candidiasis. With the aim to replace hazardous traditional reagents, a natural so
