We describe the organization of lateral line nerves and ganglia in the embryonic zebrafish, Danio rerio. Two lateral line nerves are found anterior to the otic vesicle: the anterodorsal nerve innervates neuromasts of the supraorbital, infraorbital, and otic lines, whereas the anteroventral nerve innervates the mandibular and opercular lines. An additional two lateral line nerves are found posterior to the otic vesicle: the middle lateral line nerve innervates the middle line, whereas the posterior nerve innervates the occipital dorsal and posterior trunk lines. Preotic nerves converge on a sin

The lateral line system is an essential sensory modality used by fishes and aquatic amphibians to sense hydrodynamic information. The system comprises distributed sense organs called neuromasts and their afferent nerves, organized into anterior lateral lines around the eye and jaw and posterior lateral lines (LL) on the trunk. At postembryonic stages, early forming neuromasts expand in size and sink into bony canals, while late-forming superficial neuromasts are added as the fish grows. Unlike the well-studied zebrafish posterior LL, details of anterior LL postembryonic development remain unkn

Inspired by the lateral line systems of various aquatic organisms that are capable of hydrodynamic imaging using ambient flow information, this study develops a deep learning-based object localization model that can detect the location of objects using flow information measured from a moving sensor array. In numerical simulations with the assumption of a potential flow, a two-dimensional hydrofoil navigates around four stationary cylinders in a uniform flow and obtains two types of sensory data during a simulation, namely flow velocity and pressure, from an array of sensors located on the surf

PAX6 is well known as a transcription factor that drives eye development in animals as widely divergent as flies and mammals. In addition to its localization in eyes, PAX6 expression has been reported in the central nervous system, the pancreas, testes, Merkel cells, nasal epithelium, developing cells of the inner ear, and embryonic submandibular salivary gland. Here we show that PAX6 also appears to be present in the mechanosensory neuromasts of the lateral line system in paedomorphic salamanders of the genus Eurycea. Using immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy to examine a limited num

We studied the anatomy of neuromasts, afferent sensory neurons, and efferent neurons of the midbody branch of the posterior lateral line in larvae of the zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio), 5 days after fertilization. This simple sensory system consists of ten or 11 neuromasts, 15-20 sensory neurons, and about nine efferent neurons. The neuromasts are typical free neuromasts and both afferent and efferent synapses are present on hair cells within them. The sensory neurons project into a single longitudinal column of neuropil in the hindbrain. The sensory terminals appear by light microscopy to cont

Eagle rays, cownose rays and manta rays (order Myliobatiformes) have a slender tail that can be longer than the animal's body length, but its function and structure are unknown. Using histology, immunohistochemistry and three-dimensional imaging with micro-computed tomography scans, we describe the anatomy and function of the tail in Rhinoptera bonasus, the cownose ray. The tail is an extension of the vertebral column with unique morphological specializations. Along the tail behind the barb, vertebral centra are absent and neural and haemal arches fuse to form a solid mineralized structure tha

With rapid advances in systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), developing evidence-based treatment strategies after first-line therapy failure has become a major clinical challenge. In this context, establishing a standardized consensus for later-line therapy tailored to clinical practice, acknowledging country-level heterogeneity in drug access and treatment patterns, is of significant clinical importance. Grounded in best available evidence and multidisciplinary expert experience, this consensus addresses key issues after failure of targeted therapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors

The zebrafish lateral line is a sensory system used to detect changes in water flow. It is comprised of clusters of mechanosensory hair cells called neuromasts. The lateral line is initially established by a migratory group of cells, called a primordium, that deposits neuromasts at stereotyped locations along the surface of the fish. Wnt, FGF, and Notch signaling are all important regulators of various aspects of lateral line development, from primordium migration to hair cell specification. As zebrafish age, the organization of the lateral line becomes more complex in order to accommodate the

The morphology and development of the mechanoreceptive lateral-line system in teleost fishes is reviewed, and the systematic distribution of defined types of lateral-line systems is summarized. The importance of an understanding of ontogeny is stressed and the roles of phylogenetic and developmental constraints in the evolution of the lateral-line system are discussed. Four types of head canal systems are identified on the basis of the relative development of the canals and the orientation of the neuromast receptors contained within them. The distribution of these patterns in the four major te

Hair cells are the sensory receptors in the auditory and vestibular systems of all vertebrates, and in the lateral-line system of aquatic vertebrates. The purpose of this work is to explore the zebrafish lateral-line system as a model to study and understand spontaneous activity in vivo. Our work applies genetically encoded calcium indicators along with light-sheet fluorescence microscopy to visualize spontaneous calcium activity in the developing lateral-line system. Consistent with our previous work, we show that spontaneous calcium activity is present in developing lateral-line hair cells.

AIMS: One of the most commonly performed operations in aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery is rhinoplasty, the aim of which is to construct an altered nasal shape, either for aesthetic or functional reasons. The lateral osteotomy is the most traumatic step of rhinoplasty, and is generally difficult to perform. The lacrimal system can be damaged during the lateral osteotomy procedure. In this study, we aimed to measure the distance between the lacrimal system and the lateral osteotomy line, and to determine the safe and ideal osteotomy level, which is very important in rhinoplasty pr

The mechanosensory lateral line system of aquatic vertebrates comprises a superficial network of distributed sensory organs, the neuromasts, which are arranged over the head and trunk and innervated by lateral line nerves to allow detection of changes in water flow and pressure. While the well-studied zebrafish posterior lateral line has emerged as a powerful model to study collective cell migration, far less is known about development of the anterior lateral line, which produces the supraorbital and infraorbital lines around the eye, as well as mandibular and opercular lines over the jaw and

The lateral line system and its innervation in ten tetraodontiform families and five outgroup taxa were examined. Although some homology issues remained unresolved, tetraodontiforms were characterized by having two types (at least) of superficial neuromasts (defined by the presence or absence of supporting structures) and accessory lateral lines and neuromasts (except Molidae in which "accessory" elements were absent). The preopercular line in Tetraodontiformes was not homologous with that of typical teleosts, because the line was innervated by the opercular ramule that was newly derived from

Respiration is a critical physiological signal, and abnormal respiratory patterns are widely recognized as key indicators of various cardiopulmonary and neurological disorders, making continuous monitoring crucial. However, existing clinical systems are constrained by motion limitations, complexity, and cost, hindering daily use. In this work, we present a bio-inspired, low-cost, flexible, and self-powered respiration sensor (BLFS-RS) inspired by the fish lateral line system, operating via contact electrification and electrostatic induction. It features a semicylindrical structure made of sili

Fishes use their mechanosensory lateral line (LL) system to detect local water flows in different behavioral contexts, including the detection of prey. The LL system is comprised of neuromast receptor organs on the skin (superficial neuromasts) and within bony canals (canal neuromasts). Most fishes have one cranial LL canal phenotype, but the silverjaw minnow (Ericymba buccata) has two: narrow canals dorsal and caudal to the eye and widened canals ventral to the eye and along the mandible. The ventrally directed widened LL canals have been hypothesized to be an adaptation for detection of thei

The lateral line system and its innervation were examined in the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. Although the species has seven lateral line canals and 13 superficial neuromast groups, the components are generally similar to those in many other teleosts. The lateral line system of A. japonica is distinctive in having a rostral commissure connecting the left and right supraorbital canals, pouches in the cephalic lateral line canals and superficial neuromasts along the lower lip, and lacking a postotic canal. Four tube-like elements, two along the supratemporal canal and the other two along the

Light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the epidermal lateral line system of the Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii Brandt, 1869). This system consists of mechanoreceptive neuromasts, ampullae and the electroreceptive organ. The neuromasts are located in 5 pairs of cephalic and 1 pair of trunk canals and superficially in the middle and posterior pit lines that lie dorsomedially along the top of the skull immediately adjacent to the otic ampullae field. Both canal neuromasts and pit organ superficial neuromasts have opposite polarized hair cells that are parallel along

The mechanoreceptive lateral line system in fishes detects hydrodynamic stimuli and plays a critical role in many fundamental behaviours, including orientation to water currents and the detection of stationary objects, prey and predators. Interspecific variation in lateral line structure may result from a process of functional adaptation, with the background level of hydrodynamic activity proposed as an important selective pressure. Here we use the eight species of the ecologically diverse New Zealand marine triplefin fish of the genus Forsterygion and one species from the sister genus Notocli

The ability of animals to interact with their environment hinges on the brain's capacity to distinguish between patterns of sensory information and accurately attribute them to specific sensory organs. The mechanisms by which neuronal circuits discriminate and encode the source of sensory signals remain elusive. To address this, we utilized as a model the posterior lateral line system of larval zebrafish, which is used to detect water currents. This system comprises a series of mechanosensory organs called neuromasts, which are innervated by neurons from the posterior lateral line ganglion. By
