Nano-emulsification Enhances the Larvicidal Potential of the Essential Oil of Siparuna guianensis (Laurales: Siparunaceae) Against Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Siparuna guianensis (Laurales: Siparunaceae) has a terpene-rich essential oil with great potential for larvicides. The poor water miscibility of their compounds makes nano-emulsions of great interest for novel bioactive systems, including for control of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). This species is adapted to urban environments with important role in the epidemiology of some arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya fever, zika, and urban yellow fever. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of nano-emulsification to affect Ae. aegypti larvae. An optimal system was ach

Bioactivity-guided metabolomics reveals discriminant cytotoxic signatures in Siparuna guianensis.

INTRODUCTION: Natural products remain a privileged source of structurally diverse bioactive compounds with potential for the development of safer and more selective anticancer agents. OBJECTIVES: In this study, a bioactivity-guided untargeted metabolomics approach was applied to investigate the cytotoxic chemical space of Siparuna guianensis. METHODS: The hydroethanolic leaf extract and solvent-partitioned fractions (hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol, and aqueous) were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, 4T1, and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines, followed by metabolomic profiling

Prolonged mosquitocidal activity of Siparuna guianensis essential oil encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND: The use of synthetic insecticides is one of the most common strategies for controlling disease vectors such as mosquitos. However, their overuse can result in serious risks to human health, to the environment, as well as to the selection of insecticidal resistant insect strains. The development of efficient and eco-friendly insect control is urgent, and essential oils have been presented as potential alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Moreover, nanoencapsulation techniques can enhance their efficiency by protecting from degradation and providing a controlled release rate. RES

Bioassay-guided discovery of anti-inflammatory sesquiterpenoids from Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm.

A bioassay-guided phytochemical investigation on the ethyl acetate extract from the roots of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm led to the isolation of fifteen sesquiterpenoids, comprising twelve previously undescribed compounds, linderasins A-L (1-12), and three known analogues (13-15). Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, quantum chemical calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, compounds 1 and 2 were unusual homolindenane sesquiterpenoids bearing an additional carbon at C-11 in 1 and C-8 in 2, while compounds 3 and 11 were 12,13-bisnorl

Chimonanthus nitens Oliv. essential oil mitigates lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury in rats.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Chimonanthus nitens Oliv. essential oil (named CEO) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in rats. In the present study, 21 compounds were characterized in CEO by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Furthermore, animal data suggested that CEO could protect rats against ALI, as evidence by increasing white blood cell count, reducing immune organ index and improving lung histopathological changes in rats subjected to LPS. Reduction of the levels of IL-1β was also shown during CEO-triggering lung protection in rats. Meanw

Rearing Xyleborus volvulus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on Media Containing Sawdust from Avocado or Silkbay, With or Without Raffaelea lauricola (Ophiostomatales: Ophiostomataceae).

Like other ambrosia beetles, Xyleborus volvulus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) lives in a mutualistic symbiotic relationship with fungi that serve as food source. Until recently, X. volvulus was not considered a pest, and none of its symbionts were considered plant pathogens. However, recent reports of an association between X. volvulus and Raffaelea lauricola T.C. Harr., Fraedrich & Aghayeva (Ophiostomatales: Ophiostomataceae), the cause of the laurel wilt disease of avocado (Persea americana Mill. [Laurales: Lauraceae]), and its potential role as vector of the pathogen merit further i

Shrubs and trees as natural insect protection for grazing animals in Switzerland and the alpine region: A systematic review of in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials.

Insect infestation in grazing animals is an increasing problem due to factors such as global warming and increasing resistance to insecticides, which have a direct impact on animal health and welfare. According to reports from farmers, observations in zoopharmacognosy and the ingredients of commercial insecticides, various indigenous trees and shrubs with an insecticidal or repellent effect grow or can be planted on pastures. The aim of our systematic review (designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement) was to identify perenni

Vertical Distribution and Daily Flight Periodicity of Ambrosia Beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Florida Avocado Orchards Affected by Laurel Wilt.

Ambrosia beetles have emerged as significant pests of avocado ((Persea americana Mill. [Laurales: Lauraceae])) due to their association with pathogenic fungal symbionts, most notably Raffaelea lauricola T.C. Harr., Fraedrich & Aghayeva (Ophiostomatales: Ophiostomataceae), the causal agent of the laurel wilt (LW) disease. We evaluated the interaction of ambrosia beetles with host avocado trees by documenting their flight height and daily flight periodicity in Florida orchards with LW. Flight height was assessed passively in three avocado orchards by using ladder-like arrays of unbaited sticky t

Anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activity of Siparuna guianensis Aublet, an amazonian plant traditionally used by indigenous communities.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Siparuna guianensis Aublet leaves, known as negramina, are used by indigenous and local communities in Brazil and other countries in the Americas to treat pain and inflammatory diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY: To characterize the chemical constituents and to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and locomotor activities of the dichloromethane fraction (DF) of S. guianensis leaves. Also, an acute oral toxicity test was accomplished. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The chemical characterization of DF was performed by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatogr

Genetic Diversity, Population Structure, Integration of Genome-Wide Association Studies and Machine Learning for Antibacterial Trait Analysis in the Mediterranean Spice Laurel (Laurus nobilis).

Laural (Laurus nobilis) is a Mediterranean plant with reported antibacterial properties, yet the genetic basis of its antibacterial efficacy remains largely unexplored. This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of Laurus nobilis methanolic extracts against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus, combined with genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and machine learning (ML) approaches to identify genetic markers and predict antibacterial efficacy in 92 plant samples. Antibacterial tests revealed significant variability in inhibition zones, with E. coli showing the hi
