Firearm deaths by law enforcement.

The use of deadly force during law enforcement is a matter that compels public scrutiny. There were 42 gunshot deaths caused by police over a 4-year period in New York City. The decedents' average age was 31 years and ranged from 17 to 64 years. There were 41 males and one female; and 26 Black, nine Hispanic, and seven White decedents. Ethanol and/or drugs of abuse were detected in 78% (31/40) of the decedents. The vast majority of shootings occurred with the police responding to a crime and 90% of the decedents were armed (26 handguns, six knives, one axe, one metal pipe, and one toy gun). Ve

Suicide Exposure in Law Enforcement Officers.

OBJECTIVE: To examine occupational and personal suicide exposure among Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) and related mental health outcomes. METHODS: Law Enforcement Officers (N = 813) completed an online survey about their suicide exposure, whether scenes stayed with them, and current symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicidal ideation. RESULTS: Almost all participants (95%) had responded to at least one suicide scene with an average of 30.90 (SD = 57.28) career suicide scenes and 2.17 in the last year (SD = 4.11). One in five (22%) reported a scene that they cannot shake or have nig

Outcomes of law enforcement officer administered naloxone.

OBJECTIVE: Law enforcement officer (LEO) administered naloxone is an effective intervention for treating prehospital opioid overdoses. Our objective is to determine the rate and factors associated with adverse behavioral effects and efficacy following LEO naloxone administration. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients treated with naloxone law enforcement over 5 years in one county EMS system. Law enforcement officers utilized intranasal 4 mg/0.1 mL for suspected opioid overdose. Data were acquired from forms completed by LEO following administration of naloxone. We perform

Prediction of serious misconduct in law enforcement officers.

This study compared 143 law enforcement officers with a history of serious misconduct and 429 matched comparators who had completed the Candidate and Officer Personnel Survey-Revised (COPS-R), an inventory developed specifically for psychological evaluation of public safety candidates. Most had also completed the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), which allowed for scoring of scales and indices from the PAI Police and Public Safety Report (PAI-PPSR), as well as the recently developed PAI-Plus. Correlations and t tests indicated significant small group differences on seven COPS-R scales an

Law enforcement capture of opioid settlement funding across Appalachia.

BACKGROUND: National opioid settlements were intended to fund public health remediation, yet early evidence suggests significant institutional capture. In this study I analyze how differing state governance models across 13 Appalachian states shaped resource allocation during the initial disbursement phase. METHODS: I conducted systematic document analysis of publicly available settlement expenditure records across 13 states in the Appalachia Opioid Remediation Database through July 2025, supplemented by investigative reporting and state transparency portals. I manually coded local, cash-in-h

Medical implications of Conducted Energy Devices in law enforcement.

This study examines the medical implications of Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs) in law enforcement, of which TASER® is the brand most recognised. In order to develop understanding of TASER® use, this study undertook both a literature review and original research using data provided by a number of UK police forces. The comprehensive review of literature identified a range of injures, including both primary and secondary complications. Research was conducted into TASER® use in the United Kingdom using a number of data sets, including a retrospective study of some 60,000 uses of force. This data

Stress and resilience in law enforcement training and practice.

For law enforcement and emergency services professionals, stress and resilience are not academic topics or luxuries; they are essential to the physical and mental health, as well as to optimum job functioning. This article traces the history of the stress and resilience concepts in psychology, the military, and law enforcement, outlines the major risk and protective factors for traumatic stress responses, and presents a general psychophysiological model of stress and coping. The article next applies these concepts to the proactive fostering of mental toughness and resilience, using lessons lea

Electrodermal signatures of stress during tactical law enforcement training.

Law enforcement tactical training places sustained cognitive and emotional demands on recruits, making stress regulation a critical determinant of learning and performance. This study examined EDA as an objective index of stress regulation during standardized law enforcement scenarios. Objectives were to 1) predict individual change in tactical performance from electrodermal dynamics, 2) test whether a breathing-based intervention produces different pre- to post-physiological change than standard training across the full scenario periods, and 3) quantify peri-threat EDA dynamics during threat

Law Enforcement Drug Seizures and Opioid-Involved Overdose Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: Opioid-involved overdose mortality has been on the rise for 2 decades in the US, exacerbated by an unregulated drug supply that is unpredictable and has increasingly contained highly potent fentanyl analogs starting a decade ago. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a geospatial association between law enforcement drug seizures and opioid-involved overdose mortality in San Francisco. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used location- and time-stamped overdose mortality data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and publicly available crime da

Another civilian life saved by law enforcement-applied tourniquets.

Increasing data and anecdotal operational reports are supporting the early, aggressive, prehospital application of tourniquets in potentially life-threatening extremity trauma. Especially in the civilian urban setting where transport times are short, the benefit in terms of lives saved far outweighs the potential risk to the extremity. The popular press has reported frequently on law enforcement-applied tourniquets, but to date, no group has published a scientific review of any of these cases. This case report suggests that law enforcement personnel can be trained to safely identify indication

Integrative and mind-body approaches to law enforcement professional wellness.

BACKGROUND: Law enforcement (LE) personnel have one of the most stressful jobs, and LE in the United States face a particular set of stressors that merit investigation. LE personnel regularly encounter some of the worst aspects of human nature, which elevates their risk for mental and physical health problems. This population needs viable, accessible methods for stress management and healthy lifestyle education. Integrative and mind-body practices represent one such solution. This structured review aims to assess the effectiveness and promise of integrative health interventions studied in US L

Clinicians' Experiences With Law Enforcement in a Pediatric Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Law enforcement officers (LEOs) are frequently present in emergency departments, where their roles may include accompanying patients, investigating injuries, or responding to safety concerns. Existing research on LEO presence in health care has focused on adult populations, with limited attention to pediatric settings. Pediatric emergency departments (PEDs) represent a distinct clinical environment in which developmental vulnerability, caregiver involvement, and legal considerations related to minors may shape interactions. Despite these differences, little is known
