Rhododendron tomentosum Harmaja is a marsh plant known for its high content of bioactive components, including essential oil, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. In the current work, the effects of cultivation mode (agar, liquid stationary, shake flask, and temporary immersion) and experiment duration (30, 60, and 90 days) on the growth and contents of non-volatile phenolics in Rhododendron tomentosum microshoots were investigated. Agar and liquid stationary cultures provided the highest dry biomass yield per liter, but their dry weight productivities per day were the lowest among the tested syste

The virucidal effect of aqueous extracts of a number of plants was studied in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus titration in SPEV cell culture in microplates, as well as their capacity to induce resistance in virus-infected mice. The aqueous extracts of ledum, motherwort, celandine, black currant, cowberry and bilberry inactivated TBE virus practically completely, and those of St. John's wort, pot marigold, tansy, chamomile, milfoil, and inula only partially. Studied in vivo, the extracts of motherwort, ledum, tansy and black currant induced resistance of mice to TBE virus infection assessed

BACKGROUND: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) has developed resistance to most antimicrobial agents and the antibiotics recommended for therapy are restricted, for the most part, to third generation cephalosporins. In order to investigate new potential sources of antimicrobial agents, the antibacterial properties of 14 Canadian plants used in traditional First Nations' medicine were tested against Ng isolates having differing antimicrobial susceptibility profiles.
METHODS: Ethanolic extracts of 14 Canadian botanicals, analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography, were tested for their antimicr

Labrador tea is a name for the dried leaves of Rhododendron groenlandicum, R. tomentosum or R. neoglandulosum (family Ericaceae, previously genus Ledum) as well as for the beverage native to North America, which is made from them. The above species are rich in the essential oil, which gives a conifer aroma to the tisane. Labrador tea is a valuable source of ascorbic acid, with tonic, improving digestion and relaxing activity. However, this beverage should not be drunk more than once daily because of the ledol and grayanotoxin toxicity. The common recipe for making Labrador tea is to add one te

Complex extracts of rosemary honey constituents often require very effective separation techniques to allow the identification of different compounds. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) detection can provide structure-selective information about the analytes in such matrices and has turned out to be an attractive alternative to HPLC methods. A simple and cost-effective analytical method involving solid-phase extraction (SPE) and capillary zone electrophoresis coupled to electrospray ionization-ion trap mass spectrometry (CZE-ESI-MS) to identify and characterize ph

BACKGROUND: Rhododendron tomentosum (also known as Ledum palustre L.) is a traditional medicinal plant, yet the accumulation patterns of secondary metabolites and the distribution of metal elements across its different parts (roots, old branches, young branches, branches and leaves, leaves, flowers, and fruits) remain largely unclear.
METHODS: UPLC-MS, HPLC, ICP-MS, and chemometric tools were employed to analyze the secondary metabolites (predominantly flavonoids) and the contents of Al, Fe, Cu, Mg, K, Ca, Mn, and Zn in different parts of Chinese R. tomentosum. The anti-inflammatory activity

There is a wealth of information about the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey. However, honey may contain compounds that may lead to toxicity. A compound not naturally present in honey, named 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), may be formed during the heating or preservation processes of honey. HMF has gained much interest, as it is commonly detected in honey samples, especially samples that have been stored for a long time. HMF is a compound that may be mutagenic, carcinogenic and cytotoxic. It has also been reported that honey can be contaminated with heavy metals such as lead, arseni

OBJECTIVES: Consumption of fish/seafood is clearly linked to higher mercury levels in human tissue samples. However, correlations between methylmercury (MeHg) intakes calculated from dietary surveys and mercury body burdens are usually weak and can vary across populations. Different factors may affect MeHg absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, including co-exposures to phytochemicals and antibiotics, which were shown to affect mercury body burdens in rodents. Based on the observation that rat pups developmentally exposed to MeHg and a Rhododendron tomentosum extract (Labrador Tea

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine the efficacy of Prrikweg gel, a homeopathic after-bite gel, in relieving the effects of mosquito bites, in particular itching and erythema.
DESIGN: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
SETTING: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
SUBJECTS: 100 healthy volunteers.
METHODS: All subjects were bitten under laboratory conditions by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes at one spot on the ventral aspect of the left forearm and another on a corresponding position on the right forearm. One spot was treated with the homeopathic

OBJECTIVE: Identifying plant extracts that could be used as new treatments for candidiasis and Streptococcus pneumoniae infections.
METHODS: In this work, we tested the activity of the ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis and Zingiber officinale on Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida krusei and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The anti-microbial activity was first tested in vitro, then in vivo on mice and rats.
RESULTS: The results showed that the methanolic extract of Rosmarinus officinalis and the ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale were the

In this study, 24 Wistar rats were allocated to 4 groups of 6 animals each. Groups 1 and 2 were fed a basal diet, while groups 3 and 4 were fed the basal diet supplemented further with ground rosemary at 1% level. Following 6-weeks feeding, groups 2 and 4 were injected 1 ml CCl(4)/kg bw and after six hours all animals were sacrificed. Results showed that feeding rosemary before CCl(4) treatment resulted in decline (P<0.05) of the increased aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase activities and increase (P<0.05) of the reduced cholesterol and triacylglycerols in se

A supercritical fluid extract of rosemary has been fractionated under supercritical conditions by using a preparative-SFC system. In this work, the optimum conditions have been evaluated to achieve a selective isolation of the compounds responsible for both, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. A 25 cm x 10 mm i.d. LC-Diol packed column (dp=5 microm) has been used and the separation took place at 80 degrees C of column temperature, 130 bar of pressure, and 10% of ethanol as modifier of the mobile phase (CO(2)). Two cyclones were employed to collect the fractions which were subsequently ch

PURPOSE: Using a diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model, we investigated the antidiabetic effect of Labrador tea [Rhododendron groenlandicum (Oeder) Kron and Judd], a beverage and medicinal tea used by the Cree Nations of northern Quebec.
METHODS: C57BL6 mice were divided into five groups and given standard chow (~4 % of lipids) or high-fat diet (~35 % of lipids) for 8 weeks until they became obese and insulin resistant. Treatment began by adding the plant extract at three doses (125, 250 and 500 mg/kg) to the high-fat diet for another 8 weeks. At the end of the study, insulin-sensitive tissu
