Oriental sore (acute cutaneous leishmaniasis) is usually a self-limited infection of the skin caused by the protozoan Leishmania tropica. This disease is endemic to the Mediterranean, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and is seen in this country among travellers and immigrants. We found four cases at the University of Michigan and diagnosed and treated the disorder. Some of the treatments currently recommended for this disease are potentially toxic, and none have been proved to be of real value. Uncomplicated, acute cutaneous leishmaniasis (L tropica) may best be managed by withholding treatm

PURPOSE: In Turkey, the main causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is Leishmania. infantum and the main causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is Leishmania tropica. In this study, we aimed to discuss the possible mechanisms, clinical aspects, and threat of visceralizing L. tropica.
METHODS: This study includes seven cases of VL caused by L. tropica.Five patients were male (71%) and four were adults (57%).
RESULTS: All the VL patients complained of fever and splenomegaly. Fatigue, pancytopenia, and hepatomegaly were present in six patients each (86%), while weight loss and

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in parts of Saudi Arabia. Levamisole used as a stimulant of cell mediated immunity has been shown in this study to produce good therapeutic response in clinical trials in the chronic form of this disease. Levamisole may prove to be the treatment of choice in the chronic form of Leishmania tropica.

Leishmania (L.) killicki (syn. L. tropica), which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis in Maghreb, was recently described in this region and identified as a subpopulation of L. tropica. The present genetic analysis was conducted to explore the spatio-temporal distribution of L. killicki (syn. L. tropica) and its transmission dynamics. To better understand the evolution of this parasite, its population structure was then compared with that of L. tropica populations from Morocco. In total 198 samples including 85 L. killicki (syn. L. tropica) (from Tunisia, Algeria and Libya) and 113 L. tropica specim

Cutaneous as well as visceral leishmaniasis has been previously reported in Egypt. The former clinical manifestation is attributed to Leishmania major, the latter to L. infantum. In this study, L. tropica was isolated from an Egyptian labourer returning from Saudi Arabia. Amastigotes were detected by both Giemsa staining and indirect immunofluorescence using rabbit anti-gp63. Promastigotes from Schneider's medium were typed isoenzymatically as L. tropica. In view of the emerging threat of visceralization of L. tropica, the potential risk for its transmission in Egypt is discussed.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has been recently emerged in new foci, posing a public health problem. Increasing cases of CL have been reported during recent years in Sefrou province, a previously non-endemic area. The present study was designed for epidemiological and parasitological characterization of the disease for the first time in this area. The results of a retrospective analysis of CL cases reports, between 2000 and 2011 showed that the incidence was estimated to 463/100,000 inhabitants/year, with a total of 1242 cases were notified from 1997 to 2011. Most patients were infected in the

Since its discovery in the 19th century, cutaneous leishmaniasis has been a major public health problem, especially with the appearance of more and more unusual cases of cutaneous lesions due to this parasite. Indeed, the present study joins the previous studies and describes a typical case of a nasal lesion due to Leishmania infection. This is a 20-year-old young man, with no particular pathological history, from an epidemic focus who presented with inflammatory nasal swelling similar to a mucocutaneous form. However, the X-ray data showed that no lysis of the bones proper to the nose was det

Photodynamic inactivation ofLeishmaniaspp. requires the cellular uptake of photosensitizers, e.g., endocytosis of silicon(IV)-phthalocyanines (PC) axially substituted with bulky ligands. We report here that when substituted with amino-containing ligands, the PCs (PC1 and PC2) were endocytosed and displayed improved potency againstLeishmania tropicapromastigotes and axenic amastigotesin vitro The uptake of these PCs by bothLeishmaniastages followed saturation kinetics, as expected. Sensitive assays were developed for assessing the photodynamic inactivation ofLeishmaniaspp. by rendering them flu

Leishmania tropica is one of the causative agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a disfiguring parasitic disease that recently was found to be viscerotropic. In urban areas it is transmitted from infected individuals by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies to naïve persons (anthroponotic CL). In rural areas animals are thought to be the reservoir, but the full life cycle is still under investigation (zoonotic CL). For many years L. tropica was either confused or merely grouped with L. major while Phlebotomus sergenti was the only proven vector. In recent years new foci have erupted, but few h

Crude preparations of kinetoplast vesicles were used to investigate the respiratory chain components in Leishmania tropica promastigotes. In difference spectra from enzymically and chemically reduced preparations, cytochrome b was the predominant component. By utilizing special assays designed to minimize the influence of cytochrome b on difference spectra, cytochromes a, a3 and c555 were demonstrated. Difference spectra from chemically reduced preparations indicated that pyridine nucleotides (NADH) and flavoproteins were also part of the respiratory chain. The presence of these components as

Kala-azar, or visceral leishmaniasis, in India is generally assumed to be a result of infection with Leishmania donovani. 15 parasite isolates collected over the past 10 years from patients with classical disease were typed by monoclonal antibodies, isoenzymes, and kDNA analysis. 4 were shown to be L tropica, a species historically associated with cutaneous disease and more recently a mild "visceralising" disease from the Desert Storm experience. The results confirm that L tropica is a co-endemic agent of visceral leishmaniasis in India, and may shed light on the rising frequency of therapeuti

BACKGROUND: The taxonomic status of Leishmania (L.) killicki, a parasite that causes chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis, is not well defined yet. Indeed, some researchers suggested that this taxon could be included in the L. tropica complex, whereas others considered it as a distinct phylogenetic complex. To try to solve this taxonomic issue we carried out a detailed study on the evolutionary history of L. killicki relative to L. tropica.
METHODS: Thirty-five L. killicki and 25 L. tropica strains isolated from humans and originating from several countries were characterized using the MultiLocus

In Morocco, Leishmania infantum species is the main causative agents of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). However, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to L. infantum has been reported sporadically. Moreover, the recent geographical expansion of L. infantum in the Mediterranean subregion leads us to suggest whether the nonsporadic cases of CL due to this species are present. In this context, this review is written to establish a retrospective study of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in northern Morocco between 1997 and 2018 and also to conduct a molecular study to identify the circulating species

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania tropica is endemic in Kerman, southeastern Iran. While dogs have long been implicated as the main domestic reservoirs of L. infantum, etiological agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL), they can also carry L. tropica infection. The objective of the present study was to determine molecular identity and to evaluate histopathological changes due to CL in dogs in a well-known focus of anthroponotic CL (ACL) in Kerman, southeastern Iran.
METHODS: This study was carried out in three prospective series from 1994 to 2013 on dogs. T

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in Algeria, but clinical and parasitological data from this area are scarce. In order to document the transmission of this disease in a peri-urban setting, cutaneous lesions from patients living in Constantine City and surrounding areas were spotted on filter paper for diagnosis and species identification using real-time PCR. Surprisingly, Leishmania tropica was detected in 6/69 patients, and confirmation was obtained by sequencing. This observation suggests a modification of the epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Algeria and should alert physicians a

A case is reported of cutaneous leishmaniasis with an ultrastructural study of the amastigote form, emphasizing and discussing the presence of two flagella inwards in the same parasite, a fact which is indicative of the great activity of the parasite in host lesions.

9 leishmanial strains, isolated from cutaneous papulonodular lesions on 3 patients, were characterized by cellulose acetate electrophoresis using 7 enzymes. The patterns obtained were indistinguishable from those of a Leishmania tropica reference strain and these 9 strains were similar to L. tropica in failing to infect mice. Although these 3 patients were Americans, their only potential exposure to sandflies was in Kenya, and thus they are believed to be the first cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to L. tropica in Kenya.
