Lemierre syndrome is an uncommon disease which commonly arise from acute bacterial oropharyngeal infection. This disease was first described in 1900 by Courmont and Cade Lemierre. It is commonly caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. Lemierre syndrome has been reported to be serious and potentially fatal in the preantibiotic era. It is characterized by an oropharyngeal infection leading to secondary septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with embolization to the lungs and other organs. The incidence has become relatively rare at present and is usually only diagnosed when unsuspecte

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare and severe condition, with a primary focus in the cervicofacial area and followed by thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and metastatic infections, most often pulmonary. The principal pathogen is Fusobacterium necrophorum. Less rare and associated with high mortality before antibiotics, Lemierre syndrome had became exceptional until the increase in the number of cases in recent years. Recovery is usually the rule, but often only after long convalescence and often surgical intervention. The reemergence of this disease calls for a review of the literature to upd

Lemierre syndrome is a disease that presents with oropharyngeal infection, sepsis, internal jugular vein thrombosis, and septic emboli with the Gram-negative organism Fusobacterium necrophorum cultured as the etiologic agent. Clindamycin, metronidazole and ampicillin-sulbactam are effective antibiotic treatments, although the length of treatment has not been firmly established. The syndrome is seen less frequently in the current age of antibiotics. It is important, however, that physicians be aware of the syndrome as initiation of prompt antibiotic therapy, including anaerobic coverage, is ess

We report a case of Lemierre syndrome. Although it is seen infrequently, it must be considered in patients with sore throat or dental pain, lateral neck pain, sepsis, and pulmonary symptoms. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, occurrence of anaerobic septicemia, radiologic evidence of internal jugular venous thrombosis, and pulmonary septic emboli.

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre syndrome is a complication of oropharyngeal infection and consists of a combination of internal jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis with septicaemia and distant septic emboli (mainly in the lungs). We describe an atypical case with facial vein and anterior jugular vein thrombophlebitis.
CASE SUMMARY: A 34-year-old woman attended the emergency room with tonsillitis, left head and neck cellulitis, left facial vein thrombosis and lung abscesses. A diagnosis of atypical Lemierre syndrome was proposed and the patient was treated surgically (neck incision and tonsillectomy)

BACKGROUND: Lemierre syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, was first described in the early part of this century and is characterized by pharyngitis, followed by high fever and rigors, cervical adenopathy, thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, distant abscess formation, and icterus, associated with isolation of Fusobacterium necrophorum from blood.
METHODS: This report describes a case of postanginal sepsis and reviews the medical literature on postanginal sepsis obtained through the MEDLINE data base using Fusobacterium as the key search word.
RESULTS: The features of Lemierre syndrome

Lemierre Syndrome is a rare form of septic thrombophlebitis of the head and neck veins, most typically of the internal jugular vein, which affects otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults after an oropharyngitis or other local infection. It is characterized by multiple septic embolization. Despite treatment, Lemierre Syndrome displays a high rate of in-hospital complications that include thrombus progression and a new peripheral septic embolization; moreover, it can be fatal or cause disabling sequelae. The mainstay of the treatment is antibiotic therapy; anticoagulation is often used, b

This is a case report of Lemierre's syndrome in a 17-year-old male patient. Lemierre's disease consists of suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (SIJVT) in the presence of oropharyngeal infection and can be complicated by septic pulmonary embolism. Other causes of SIJVT include deep neck infections and central venous catheterization. The disease usually results from Gram-negative anaerobic organisms such as Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by an oropharyngeal infection followed by internal jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis and metastatic emboli, most often to the lungs and joints. The syndrome is most commonly associated with the anaerobic gram-negative rod Fusobacterium necrophorum. Diagnosis is established with evidence of metastatic infection and internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis. CT is considered the diagnostic procedure of choice. Treatment should include an extended course of a beta-lactamase-resistant antibiotic and surgical drainage of any purulent fluid collection. Anticoagul

Postanginal sepsis, or Lemierre's syndrome, is rare but with life-threatening potential involving mainly infants and adolescents. The morbidity or mortality is caused mainly by lack of knowledge of the syndrome. The 18-year-old boy described here developed a jugular thrombosis 7 days after an angina. Fusobacterium necrophorum was isolated from the culture of the excised jugular vein. Secondary embolism involved the lungs, associated with an iliac osteomyelitis and sacroiliitis. Computed tomography was used for diagnosis and follow-up.

Lemierre's syndrome is an acute medical condition characterized by anaerobic oropharyngeal infection leading to septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. The illness is often complicated by septic pulmonary emboli and distant metastatic infections. Treatment consists of surgical drainage of purulent collections and long-term intravenous antibiotic therapy. Although Lemierre's syndrome is rare, it is potentially fatal and remains an important entity for clinicians to recognize and treat appropriately.

Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of an anaerobic oropharyngeal infection, affecting young adults and adolescents. The disease is characterised by a septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and "metastatic" infections, which can be followed by fulminant sepsis and rapid death. More recently, it has been reported a recrudescence of this condition, which could be attributable to alterations in antibiotic usage patterns. The authors report the case of a LS secondary to a bout of intense cough, a cause not yet described in the literat

Lemierre's syndrome is a serious disease caused by an anaerobic bacteria called Fusobacterium necrophorum, which usually occurs in healthy teenagers and adolescents. The infection takes place in the throat and spreads through septic thrombosis of the tonsillar and internal jugular veins. The resulting bacterial infection is complicated by septic emboli in several places such as the lungs, joints and bones. Fever, pharyngitis, dysphagia, odynophagia, or swelling of the oropharyngeal is a common symptom. Although rare, there has been evidence of a recurrence of the condition in recent years, whi

Introduction Lemierre syndrome, or postpharyngitis anaerobic sepsis, is an infrequent but life-threatening infection that often involves thrombosis of the internal jugular vein. The role of anticoagulation in addition to antibiotics and surgical treatment remains uncertain. Objectives 1) To perform a meta-analysis on outcomes and treatment of Lemierre syndrome; and 2) to evaluate the effect of anticoagulation in Lemierre syndrome on vessel recanalization and on mortality. Data Synthesis A Pubmed database search was conducted using the keywords Lemierre syndrome . A total of 427 studies were

Classical Lemierre syndrome is a rare and severe disease with thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and metastatic infections. We report on a case of Lemierre-like syndrome secondary to mastoiditis, with a favorable outcome, in a healthy infant presenting with torticollis. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics are necessary to decrease mortality.

A 38-year-old homeless man was admitted with a 2-week history of a sore throat, increasing shortness of breath, and high fever. Clinical examination showed enlarged and tender submandibular and anterior cervical lymph nodes and a pronounced enlargement of the left peritonsillar region (Figure 1a). CT scan of the throat and the chest showed left peritonsillar abscess formation, occlusion of the left internal jugular vein with inflammatory wall thickening and perijugular soft tissue infiltration, pulmonary abscesses, and bilateral pleural effusions (Figures 1b-e, arrowed). Anaerobe blood culture

Sepsis is a common problem in patients who have cuffed catheters for hemodialysis. Line sepsis, however, has not often been associated with septic thrombophlebitis as seen in Lemierre syndrome. Thrombophlebitis of a central vein associated with catheter placement is extremely rare and when encountered is known to affect the femoral or the subclavian vein. Thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein after hemodialysis catheter placement has not been reported. We present the case of a woman with line sepsis who developed Lemierre syndrome, a serious complication of which the medical community

Lemierre syndrome seldom follows an episode of pharyngotonsillitis. Characteristically, it is comprised of septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and bacteremia, leading to lung emboli and metastatic abscess formation. We describe Lemierre syndrome that complicates an acute mastoiditis, with considerations regarding its pathogenesis and management. Despite its sporadic occurrence, awareness of Lemierre syndrome is important, since early recognition reduces both the morbidity and mortality associated with it.
