A main traditional use of European Leonurus cardiaca and East Asian Leonurus japonicus is in the treatment of neurological disorders such as anxiety, depression, nervousness, and as a sedative for insomnia. However, their mechanism of action is still under discussion. As anxiety and depressive disorders are increasingly being recognized as connected to dysfunctions of the gamma-aminobutyric acid system, the in vitro effects of standardized L. cardiaca and L japonicus extracts as well as five of their isolated constituents, namely, the labdane-type isoleosibirin, the novel iridoid 7R-chloro-6-d

Leonurus japonicus is a vital herb known for its blood-activating and menstruation-regulating properties, with stachydrine being a crucial secondary metabolite contributing to these effects. Enhancing the accumulation of active ingredients is a key concern in cultivation. This study utilized a hydroponic experiment with varying inorganic nitrogen (N) concentrations (supplied as Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and KNO3) as nutrient substrates, demonstrating that exogenous nitrogen input significantly increased biomass and promoted stachyridine synthesis in L. japonicus over an extended incubation period. BACKGROUND: It is important to note that motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) has especially calming properties, partly due to its chlorogenic acid (CLA) content. While the concentration of this acid in alcoholic or water-alcoholic extracts has been determined in the literature, there is no knowledge about the content of CLA in water extracts. Therefore, the aim of this study was primarily to assess the CLA content in infusions prepared in four different ways and to estimate the actual CLA intake with these infusions. An additionally aim was to assess the content of phenols and their antioxidant pro

Endometritis in dairy cows has become a key challenge in the field of animal reproductive health. Currently, the primary treatment method is using antibiotics. However, antibiotics could induce pathogen resistance and the presence of drug residues. Traditional Chinese medicine has good advantages in the treatment of endometritis in dairy cows. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic effect of Viola yedoensis and Leonurus japonicus (TCMF) on endometritis in dairy cows. Firstly, LPS-induced cell inflammation model was established to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of TCMF, and then

Acylation represents a pivotal biochemical process that is instrumental in the modification of secondary metabolites throughout the growth and developmental stages of plants. The BAHD acyltransferase family within the plant kingdom predominantly utilizes coenzyme A thioester as the acyl donor, while employing alcohol or amine compounds as the acceptor substrates to facilitate acylation reactions. Using bioinformatics approaches, the LjBAHD gene family members in the genome of Leonurus japonicus (L. japonicus) were identified and characterized including gene structure, conserved motifs, cis-act

The genus Leonurus L. is renowned for its diverse secondary metabolites with significant pharmacological value; however, the chemical biodiversity and biological potential of its indigenous members in Türkiye remain largely unexplored. This study investigates four species (L. cardiaca, L. quinquelobatus, L. glaucescens, and L. persicus) to elucidate their phytochemical architecture and therapeutic capacities. Characterization of the ethanol, methanol, and aqueous (5% infusion) extracts via HPLC-MS/MS identified verbascoside, genkwanin, and caffeoylquinic acids as the major representative bioac

Although several antiarrhythmic drugs of chemical origin are in clinical use since decades, their application is often limited by their adverse effects and especially by their inherited proarrhythmic risk, which can lead to a significantly increased mortality in patients receiving these compounds. On the other hand, aqueous extracts from the aerial parts of the European Lamiaceae Leonurus cardiaca (Ph.Eur.) have been used for centuries as a remedy against tachyarrhythmia and other cardiac disorders. Nevertheless, a scientific basis for the claim of direct cardiac electrophysiological, antiarrh

Degradation of the components of Leonurus Herb was examined during drying. Compounds 1 and 2 were detected on TLC at lower temperature, but not at higher temperature. Their chemical structures were determined by spectral methods. They immediately decomposed even at 40°C in chloroform solution. They are believed to be transformed through a retro-aldol reaction. Compounds 1 and 2 have not been previously reported.

Air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM) and diesel exhaust particles (DEP), are associated with respiratory diseases. Therefore, preventive and therapeutic strategies against PM-and DEP (PM10D)-induced respiratory diseases are needed. Herein, we evaluate the protective effects of a mixture of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KC3 and Leonurus Japonicas Houtt (LJH) extract against airway inflammation associated with exposure to PM10D. To determine the anti-inflammatory effects of the LJH extract, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the expression of inflammatory pathways were deter

An HPLC quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) MS method was developed for the identification of secondary metabolites in Leonurus turkestanicus V.I. Krecz. et Kuprian. Ethanolic and chloroform extracts from the plant's aerial parts were tested. A total of 16 compounds (iridoid glycosides, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and nitrogen-containing compounds, as well as diterpene acetate derivatives) were identified and tentatively characterized based on (or using) their retention times and UV and Q-TOF-MS data. Previously reported aucubin (1), 6-deoxy-8-acetylharpagid (2), and stachydrine (13, 15) and h

Muscle atrophy involves the progressive loss of muscle mass and function, often linked to aging, disease, or inactivity. Although Leonurus japonicus and its active compound, leonurine, possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, their potential to improve muscle mass remains unknown. This study investigated the recovery-promoting effects and underlying mechanisms of a leonurine-standardized water extract of L. japonicus (LJW) and leonurine on muscle atrophy. We hypothesized that LJW and leonurine would promote recovery from muscle atrophy by activating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway and s
