Leprosy, or Hansen disease, is a greatly feared infection of Mycobacterium leprae whose neuropathy induces disfiguring injuries subject to great social stigma. Historically, Australia largely confined its few leprosy patients to remote leper colonies (leprosaria) or in quarantine hospitals. The Philippines and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) had much larger infected populations in the early 20th century and required alternative approaches. The US military government of the Philippines chose actively to identify and confine all leprosy patients to segregated colonies on remote islands. Al

In the recent Greek ages the most devastating epidemics were plague, smallpox, leprosy and cholera. In 1816 plague struck the Ionian and Aegean Islands, mainland Greece, Constantinople and Smyrna. The Venetians ruling the Ionian Islands effectively combated plague in contrast to the Ottomans ruling all other regions. In 1922, plague appeared in Patras refugees who were expelled by the Turks from Smyrna and Asia Minor. Inoculation against smallpox was first performed in Thessaly by the Greek women, and the Greek doctors Emmanouel Timonis (1713, Oxford) and Jakovos Pylarinos (1715, Venice) made

A 26-year-old Indonesian male living in Japan consulted our hospital with complaint of fever, general malaise and infiltrative erythematous plaques associated with lymph node swelling. Physical examination revealed a sensation disorder in the distal portion of the extremities and hypertrophy of peripheral nerves. Histopathology of the skin lesion showed the multifocal granulomatous inflammation containing many acid-fast bacilli associated with infiltration of foam cells and neutrophils. Under the diagnosis of leprosy (LL type) accompanied by erythema nodosum leprosum, the combined chemotherapy

We present a case of a patient treated with etanercept (TNF-a antagonist) for psoriatic arthritis, who then developed clinical symptoms of lepromatous leprosy. She presented with multiple erythematous plaques on trunk, face and extremities, saddle nose deformity, alopecia, articular deformities of the feet and peroneal neuropathy. The clinical suspicion of Hansen's Disase was confirmed by the biopsy findings (lepromatous leprosy). On further questioning, the patient stated that her father was diagnosed with leprosy 70 years ago and had spent some years in a leper colony in Spinalonga island in

Change of clinical features of leprosy in a Japanese National Leprosarium Hoshizuka-Keiaien during 20 years (1972-91) was studied by analyzing clinical records. (1) Skin slit smear positive rate among lepromatous and borderline cases once increased from 16.3% (1972) to 28.8% (1981) and then declined to 3% (1991). (2) Relapse was 4.25 cases per annum among 817 patients (0.52% per annum). Relapse of lepromatous leprosy (0.42% per annum) is decreasing, and borderline or neuritic relapse (0.12% per annum) of previously lepromatous cases is the major feature in recent years. (3) In lepromatous rela

As of the year 1991 there were 358 leprosy patients in National Leprosarium Matsuoka Hoyo-En, including 223 patients (62.3%) who had received the injections of chaulmoogra oil before. Calcinosis cutis caused probably from the injections was noted on 73 patients (32.7%): 67 lepromatous and 6 tuberculosis cases. It has never been reported before that the T type patient suffering from calcinosis cutis was observed in the cases of the chaulmoogra oil injection in Japan. The detectable positions of calcinosis cutis were mostly at the injected sites, that is, outside the right brachium followed by b

Hospital-acquired pneumonia is one of the most important fatal respiratory diseases in the elderly. Prompt and precise empiric therapy is essential for recovery. Fourteen isolates from twelve elderly lepromatous leprosy patients (9 men, 3 women, mean age of 75.8 years) with hospital-acquired pneumonia were studied. Subsequently, empiric therapy with gentamicin and beta-lactams for nosocomial pneumonia in the elderly was examined. Fourteen types of bacteria isolated from expectorated sputum specimens consisted mainly of ten strains of gram-negative bacilli (71%) six of Klebsiella pneumoniae, on

The Sungai Buloh Leprosarium in Malaysia, established in 1930, provided relief for many individuals with leprosy, yet their personal narratives remain largely untold. This study explored the lived experiences of older individuals affected by leprosy at the Leprosarium, focusing on their concerns, needs, and challenges. By examining the historical context and key themes from interviews with leprosy-affected participants, the study aimed to enhance their well-being and provide insights applicable to leprosy-affected individuals in the community, other leprosaria, and older individuals in institu

This article presents evidence from two states of India, Bihar and Maharashtra, on the process of "dehabilitation" among male and female leprosy patients, and suggests gender-sensitive interventions to address existing problems in leprosy control. While the study investigated a wide range of gender differences in the impact of leprosy, this article focuses on only two-marriage and family reactions. Important gender differences were apparent in the impact of the disease. While both men and women were negatively affected in terms of their family and marital lives, women suffered more isolation a

The author presents the history of the places where patients with epidemic pathologies were isolated. Since the study of medicine began, such places have been known as asclepiei, xenodochi, hospices, lazarettos, sanitary cordons, and quarantine stations and they contributed to controlling epidemics in Europe. Important not only in the context in which they were created, these structures expressed the medical culture and point of view of that age. Although very far from discovering the cause of the pathology due to their lack of scientific knowledge, the medical class sometimes knew how to effe

INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, isolation of individuals affected with leprosy was compulsory by law from 1920 to 1962, but in reality, confinement of patients to leprosaria continued until the 1980s. The social participation restriction of people still living in these institutions has never been investigated systematically.
STUDY AIM: To examine the extent and type of participation restriction perceived by former leprosy patients living in the Centro de Convivência Antônio Diogo (CCAD), a previous leprosy colony in rural Northeast Brazil, by using the Participation Scale.
RESULTS: Forty (51-9%) ou

Before proceeding to a discussion of the experiments upon cold-blooded animals, it is necessary to review briefly some of the work recently done with the bacillus of leprosy. The appearance of the bacillus in man and its behavior under artificial cultivation, and in the tissues of lower animals, should be considered in order that comparisons may be drawn. In their studies with the organism under cultivation, Duval and Gurd pointed out that the long, slender, and beaded appearance of the leprosy bacillus described by Hansen, in 1872, is lost when removed for several generations from the parent

The present report describes the non-haematological toxicity and the influence of growth factor administration on haematological toxicity and haematopoietic recovery observed after high-dose carboplatin (1200 mg m(-2)), etoposide (900 mg m(-2)) and melphalan (100 mg m(-2)) (CEM) followed by peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation (PBPCT) in 40 patients with high-risk cancer during their first-line treatment. PBPCs were collected during the previous outpatient induction chemotherapy programme by leukaphereses. CEM administration with PBPCT was associated with low non-haematological tox

Aberrant glycosylation is a hallmark of cancer and can lead to changes that influence tumor behavior. Glycans can serve as a source of novel clinical biomarker developments, providing a set of specific targets for therapeutic intervention. Different mechanisms of aberrant glycosylation lead to the formation of tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACAs) suitable for selective cancer-targeting therapy. The best characterized TACAs are truncated O-glycans (Tn, TF, and sialyl-Tn antigens), gangliosides (GD2, GD3, GM2, GM3, fucosyl-GM1), globo-serie glycans (Globo-H, SSEA-3, SSEA-4), Lewis anti
