Twelve flavonoid glycosides including five undescribed ones, lepisativutimines Q-U, were isolated and identified from Lepidium sativum seeds. Acid hydrolysis followed by acetic derivatization and GC analysis were conducted to determine the absolute configurations for sugars. Lepisativutimine U and beitingxinhuangtong A were uncommon kaempferol 8-S-glycosides, and complete NMR data of beitingxinhuangtong A were provided for the first time. Mass fragmentation pathways of isolated compounds were deduced based on their MS/MS data, and characteristic mass fragmentation patterns were summarized. Lep

This study presents a straightforward and efficient bioassay with garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) for ecotoxicological analyses. Cress seedlings grow upright in hanging plastic bags on chromatography paper soaked with the test substance. Scans of the bags easily allow digital measurement of the length of the seedlings after the growth period. Suitability of this test system was examined by treating cress with different concentrations of several heavy metal compounds (cadmium nitrate, copper sulphate, iron sulphate, lead nitrate, manganese chloride, zinc chloride) and sodium chloride. Germin

This study was aimed to provide the pharmacological basis for the medicinal use of Lepidium sativum in diarrhea using in vivo and in vitro assays. The seed extract of Lepidium sativum (Ls.Cr) at 100 and 300 mg/kg inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhea in rats. In isolated rat ileum, Ls.Cr (0.01-5 mg/mL) reversed carbachol (CCh, 1 µM) and K(+) (80 mM)-induced contractions with higher potency against CCh, similar to dicyclomine. Preincubation of rat ileum with a lower concentration of Ls.Cr (0.03 mg/mL) caused a rightward parallel shift in the concentration-response curves (CRCs) of CCh without s

Halone 1301 belongs to a group of widely used fire repellants. Although banned in several countries, the production has still not been discontinued, and thus hazards due to use or spill can be expected. The study reports on effects of the halone 1301 on three plant species frequently used for bioindication studies: Lepidium sativum (mouse-ear cress), Phaseolus vulgaris (bush bean) and Petunia hybrida. Plants were exposed to 1 ppbv of the gas in ambient air under controlled conditions for 18 days (L. sativum), and 45 days (P. vulgaris, P. hybrida), respectively. None of the plants showed visibl

The paper presents the results of studies on the influence of selected concentrations (10-100 mg L-1) of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn) and metalloids (As, Sb, Se) on the germination and root elongation of garden cress (Lepidium sativum L). There are not many studies on phytotoxicity of heavy metals and metalloids with the complex use of single plant species so far. On the basis of the germination index (GI) and inhibition concentration IC50, the following order of phytotoxicity of the tested elements was determined: Se> As> Hg> Sb > Mo > Cd> Co > Zn > Ni. The other

The influence of some important barbiturates on the capacity to stimulate or to stop the growth of seedling of Lepidium sativum L. was tested and the results statistically evaluated. Phenobarbital, cyclobarbital and pentobarbitial show a significant stimulating effect on growth between 10(-2) and 10(-4) moles/l. All barbiturates in concentrations over 10(-3)M act strongly inhibiting. The average inhibitory concentrations (ID50) show a clear dependence on biological properties, in the first place the partition coefficient.

Bismuth (Bi) is considered a "green metal" as its toxicity has been reported to be lower than other metals, particularly lead. Even though the low presence in the environment, an increase of Bi concentrations in soil and wastewater is predictable due to its enhanced uses for many industrial and medical applications. Therefore, given the little literature on the matter, particularly in plants, information on the effects of Bi on living organisms is needed. In this study, seeds of garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.), a model plant for ecotoxicological assays (OECD), were exposed to increasing Bi
