Pediatric ocular injuries in Lesotho.

One hundred and ten children were evaluated in a prospective study in Lesotho to determine the pattern of pediatric ocular injuries in a developing African country. The pattern was found to be the same as that of developed countries regarding increased incidence in boys, frequency of accidental, self-inflicted and assault injuries, and high incidence of corneal lacerations, traumatic cataracts, hyphemas, and lid lacerations. The pattern differed from developed countries in the absence of injuries due to arrows, airgun pellets (BBs), fireworks, toys and chemical burns, the absence of orbital fr

Etiology, characteristics and occurrence of heart diseases in rural Lesotho (ECHO-Lesotho): A retrospective echocardiography cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In 2019, 600'000 people in Africa died of heart failure and heart diseases will increase on the continent. It is crucial to understand the regional etiologies and risk factors for heart failure and underlying heart diseases. However, echocardiography data from rural Africa are scarce and from Lesotho non-existent. This study aims to examine the occurrence, characteristics and etiology of heart failure and heart diseases using echocardiography data from a referral hospital in rural Lesotho. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at Seboche Mission Hospital, the only ref

An investigation of the quality of meat sold in Lesotho.

Since the closure of the Lesotho abattoir in 2003, only imported meat can be legally sold. However, it was estimated in 2007 that 80% of the meat sold at butcheries comes from informal slaughter. The aim of this study was to investigate the situation. The number and location of informal butcheries in Lesotho (n = 143) were recorded and mapped using Geographical Information Systems. Observations (photographs) of informal slaughter indicated a lack of hygiene, unskilled slaughtermen and illegal disposal of offal with possible environmental pollution. In addition, a cross-sectional study was unde

Survey of ophthalmic conditions in rural Lesotho.

The first survey of ocular problems in rural Lesotho was conducted by a visiting eye team and consisted of an examination of 1266 ophthalmic clinic patients at 15 representative sites throughout the country. The most common ocular conditions encountered were: conjunctivitis, refractive error, vernalis, senile cataract, glaucoma, corneal opacities and trauma. This disease pattern differs from most developing African nations for reasons of climate, geography and diet. The absence of disciform macular degeneration, narrow-angle glaucoma, and rarity of retinal detachment was noted. The educational

Determinants of indoor secondhand smoke exposure in Lesotho: evidence from the Lesotho Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data 2023-24.

Although tobacco use is high in Lesotho, research on indoor secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is limited. We assessed the prevalence and predictors of indoor SHS exposure using Lesotho DHS 2023-24 data of 36,161 household individuals of all ages. Binomial logistic regression was carried out. The prevalence of indoor SHS exposure in Lesotho was 24%. Maseru district (27%) had the highest prevalence. Sex, wealth quintile, household size, and district showed significant associations with indoor SHS. Females, compared to males, were less likely to have indoor SHS exposure (aOR 0.77, 95% CI 0.73-0.81)

Prevalence of low-back pain in Lesotho mothers.

OBJECTIVES: To identify factors that strongly affect the presence of severe low-back pain in mothers living in the Maseru District of Lesotho, to find out whether there is any truth to the widespread belief that rural mothers are more vulnerable to severe low-back pain than their urban counteTparts, and to identify influential factors that are strongly associated with each other. METHODS: A random sample of 4001 mothers was collected from the Maseru District of Lesotho in September 1994 by using sampling techniques of stratification and proportional allocation with respect to size. Nurses' practice of metabolic monitoring for patients on antipsychotics in Lesotho.

BACKGROUND: Severe mental illness is associated with higher physical health morbidities and reduced life expectancy, with an estimated 14.3% of global deaths attributed to mental disorders. Antipsychotic medications (APs) used in treatment contribute to physical health issues, including metabolic and cardiovascular effects. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess nurses' practices regarding metabolic monitoring for patients prescribed antipsychotic medications at Mohlomi Hospital in Lesotho. SETTING: The study was conducted at Mohlomi Hospital, the primary psychiatric facility in Lesotho.

Adherence to tuberculosis infection control guidelines by nurses in Lesotho.

BACKGROUND: Lesotho has a high prevalence rate of tuberculosis (TB) that has been exacerbated by high prevalence of HIV. Adherence to the TB infection control guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization is pivotal in TB infection control. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the level of adherence to the TB infection control guidelines by nurses in TB wards and outpatient departments and the factors associated with nonadherence to the guidelines in Lesotho. METHODS: This was an analytical study based on a semistructured questionnaire administered on 55 purposively sampled nurses working in TB

Progress towards measles and rubella elimination in Lesotho, 2011-2025.

BACKGROUND: Lesotho, a lower middle-income country in southern Africa, has historically had relatively high routine immunization coverage over the last three decades. Since 1996, the country has been implementing measles elimination strategies. This manuscript evaluates Lesotho's performance, from 2011 to 2025, against the World Health Organization's criteria for measles and rubella elimination. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of Lesotho's immunization and surveillance data during 2011-2025. This included Lesotho's annual WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WU

Rifampicin Resistant Tuberculosis in Lesotho: Diagnosis, Treatment Initiation and Outcomes.

The Lesotho guidelines for the management of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) recommend initiation of patients diagnosed with rifampicin resistant (RR)-TB on a standardized drug resistant regimen while awaiting confirmation of rifampicin resistant TB (RR-TB) and complete drug susceptibility test results. Review of diagnostic records between 2014 and 2016 identified 518 patients with RR-TB. Only 314 (60.6%) patients could be linked to treatment records at the Lesotho MDR hospital. The median delay in treatment initiation from the availability of Xpert MTB/RIF assay result was 12 days (IQR 7-19)

Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis with Conflicting Resistance Testing Results, Lesotho.

A patient with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis in Lesotho recovered successfully after failed treatment with bedaquiline, delamanid, linezolid, and clofazimine. Whole-genome sequencing and broth microdilution testing results were not in agreement, illustrating the urgent need for studies that correlate phenotypic and genotypic resistance testing with clinical response.

HIV retesting among people living with HIV in Lesotho in 2022.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread HIV testing in sub-Saharan Africa, regular testing among at-risk populations is crucial for effective prevention. However, reports increasingly indicate retesting among people living with HIV (PLHIV), a group that would not require additional testing since they would already have received a confirmed diagnosis. We describe the demographic characteristics of PLHIV retesters in Lesotho, report the average number of HIV tests post-diagnosis among PLHIV, and share motivations for retesting. METHODS: In August 2022, a nationally representative cohort in Lesotho parti
